i had one when i was a kid. i can say that is was definitely the best dog ive ever had. that dog was like my mom when i was little.. i would ride on her back like a horse and she would just walk around the house with me like it was nothing. she was my snuggle buddy, anywhere i was she would curl up against me and pass out. i had a seizure and she ran upstairs and got my mom, she saved my life. BEST dog you could ever have. extremely intelligent, and loyal. GET THIS DOG.
I had a Rhodesian Ridgeback for 10 years, he died of old age two years ago. He was the best dog me and my brothers could ever have. He was loyal, always followed us around, protected us from every treat he felt.
I had two ridgebacks back to back growing up , one from when i was born -8yrs old and one from 9 to 21. I cried for each one for a couple days. they're just another family member they're amazing dogs! i ll be getting one of my own as soon as i get a house with a big backyard
Our dog, Monty, was great with kids. I was introduced to him when I just got back from the hospital, after being born! He sniffed my cot, and we were best pals until he went to doggy heaven. Miss that dog. Once I have my own house, I am getting another one!
I love my Ridgeback. He has a great sense of humor and because of him a couple of my family members now want one. I agree, they like to be where you are and will conform to your lifestyle. They DO need exercise, all dogs do to a certain degree, but do not freak out if you can't one day. And when you have gained their trust and love you HAVE IT!
I had an extremely intelligent ridgeback, and he loved the sun. They really are sun dogs, spending hours sunbathing. My most favourite breed to own, second fave being a Rottwieler.
I have had a shelter dog now for about 2 yrs and was told it was a lab mix...in seeing this video I now know she is a ridgeback mix with the characteristics described..she is so wonderful, lovable, high energy and plays so well with the other dogs in my home, even gets along with my 2 cats...i love this breed...she does not have the line going down her back, so always assume she was a lab as the shelter had indicated....i love her so much....she is a wonderful dog!!
The world needs more like you Bob Watters! If you're young enough to ride a skate board my girl used to pull me on it with harness when it was not too hot. Now that he's older she'll run with me along side the skateboard. Swimming is great exercise for them. Pick one up out of RR rescue. If you do remember it probably will take a long time for the dog to fully accept and trust you. Really a one owner dog but the best. Kinda like a GSD but with a fun loving and sometimes goofy side.
It is a dog which is good with the family's children I believe. Bobo was a brother to me, we were inseparable from his birth on Halloween in '97 to when I got my first B.A. in '09 when he passed away the month before I graduated. It is true they are cautious with non-family, especially outside children, that is only their protective side, they will guard and observe, but not challenge unless they sense there is a bad person. And Bobo was good at that. I miss him badly, love you Bobo.
I love my past and present rhodesians i was raised with one since i was born and he was very gentle and loving my little brother used to sleep on top of his back
Love ridgebacks. When I was a kid one saved me from getting attacked by a huge German Shepherd police dog. She jumped between us so I could get away. Won't ever forget her, she was a good girl.
I have 2 of these dudes and they are the most wonderful creatures. Just as said before, they just want to be doing what you are doing. Not hyper at all, and they think they are lap dogs. True pack animals. Sweetest, kindest animals to everyone, but they can sense trouble. The only time they bark is when they are alerting you to something. And they are the most athletic agile dogs I've ever seen
We got a puppy at 6 weeks old that was supposedly a 'labrador retriever mix' he's fully grown now and we've only just figured out that he's a rhodesian...definitely not disappointed :)
It's amazing how the Rhodesian and the Thai Ridgeback both have nearly identical temperament. Both are such wonderful breeds of dogs, two of the most loyal, courageous canine friends any human could ask for.
I have 2 of these brutes.Such potent but gentle creatures, real athletes of the bush. Not aggressive or even comparable to fighting dogs, but just has raw courage and will stand up to a lion if necessary... never mind any other dog
We've got one at home! He's huge and gentle. They only fight when taunted. Ones my neighbours dog, who is very agressive, tried to attack our RR Binik. i was really amazed when Binik grabbed the dog and sort of trew it on his back. The dog fled with his tail between his legs and binik just sort of sat there like' yeez that all you got???' hahah
i have a ridgeback without a ridge and they are great dogs which i would reccomend to anyone looking for a good dog, mine was already trained but good training makes them a great dog to come home to
My Ridgebacks name was tyue. He weighed 100 lb and was Supernatural. I went water skiing at Lake Havasu in Arizona outside of Phoenix. We were separated and I couldn't find him. I left word with the Rangers and they called me and said they saw him but we're afraid to go near him Wise Choice. I was up early the next morning to go look for him again and when I opened up the door there he was he had a Traverse over 50 miles overnight through a city to the house that I was living in absolutely amazing.
I agree! When I was born we had a Ridgey, he died at age 12, one of the best dogs ever :( But we got another one from the same breeder (new pup was our old dogs great uncle I think). He is now 6! I love him so much and he is so relaxed and loves the whole family! I plan on getting one when I move out of home (that may be a while xD). BEST BREED EVER!
my grandad has 2 of them, male and female, called Nero and Reda, female's are extremely gentle, you can do anything to them as long as they are not hurt, males are more protective though, so keep an eye out when they are with kids, but great dogs!
My boy is 8 months now, and i can't imagine having any other dog. He has his days where he is a couch potatoe, but for the most part he wants his excersise.
Someday I would love to see another Anthromorphic animated film with all of these different dog and cat breeds represented as aspects of society. I can totally see a Special Forces team made up of these fabulous animals!
I have had two of these dogs the first just died a few years ago at 14 years old and my one now is 4 yrs old and the most adorabley beautiful dog iv ever seen
The only slight disagreement I have is what this video says about Rhodesians for younger kids. My family got a Rhodesian two weeks before I was born and in a way we grew up together. We had a bond that no one else in my family had; she used to let me lay my head on her stomach like a pillow and we would lay in the sun. Her name was Zipper (creative, I know) and she was apart of our family for 13 years before she passed away. I agree with all these comments, Rhodesians are the greatest.
I miss my girls, Charlie and Lucy. The most amazing dogs I have ever had. Passed a couple of years ago. Charlie at 14, Lucy at 12. Looking for some new pups!
i have a ridgeback called scooby (yes scooby-doo) and hes rips trees down!!! i do love my doggy :) and i told my freind of what this breed can do and now she odesnt want to come to my house :/ bu ti did tell her that my little sister was a toddler when we got him as a puppy. so protective too a rottewieler started on him. that has nothing on him!!!! best dogs ever!!! i want one when i grow up :)
This video is very accurate, they just left out the fact that these types of dogs are very prone to cancer. I have lost two of these dogs to cancer and a third has developed cancer and is currently getting treatment (chemotherapy).
These dogs do not like the cold, but I know of some in Alaska that are living a great life. You will have to buy it a warm coat, and if you are in a city that salts the streets, boots are recommended as well.
I have a Rhodie mixed w a Golden Retriever, She is totally incredible! Love her to death! Much more endurance than her boyfriend an Anatolian Shepard/Lab/Great Dane mix, and a Lab I'm baby sitting. during the winter she is a couch potato. I Ski and Snowmobile but she cant always join me. I will try and snowshoe with them this week. here is a link to a video of her.
My ridgeback is lazy as well but is also up for play if you want to. Sometimes he will bring the play to you as well. I describe him as happy go lucky. He is a good size boy at slightly bigger than AKC standards weighing in at 100 pounds. He is still muscular though, no fat! I am def looking to get another one but not from a champion breeder this time as I only want them for pets.
With proper early socialization, any breeds can get along even with cats and small animals. I read lots of comments of people who could not comprehend why their dogs are so aggressive towards other dogs and human despite them not teaching their dogs to be "aggressive". Not realizing that "not training their dogs" is precisely the cause of such problems. Make sure you do the puppy socialization using positive reinforcement and be firm, you will do great with your Rhodesian Ridgeback & Beagle.
i was just with 2, we were playing in the edge of the pool and 1 jumped in the water and followed me. i paniced untill i just simply stopped him with my palm, soo easy soo sweet
I have a 7 month old rr girl called nala defo the best dog around we have had a great bond since I traveled so far to get her and since that day she has followed me everywhere bit of a nightmare when my wife takes her out but hey who didn't used to play up for the babysitter!!!lol if all go's to plan she will have pups so there will be me more around.
Retire, be self employed or have a stay at home wife/husband. These dogs IMHO are better off when a family member is around at all times. They don't suffer from separation anxiety but they can't be locked up or kept in a kennel away from the family.
@laurascr I grew up with allergies (hay fever) and I had several Rhodesian Ridgebacks in the home. If your skin is sensitive to 'spiky' hair, that might be a problem. They don't lose hair at all, though.
I had a friend who had two of these and they were so well trained they would not let you out of your car unless the owner allowed them too. I own a 100 lb pitbull and he's a big baby compared to these dogs.
Odorless? They aren't. - Also you'll find ridgeback hair in places you wouldn't imagine. Concerning small children - Some RRs might not like kids between 3-5 y/o from 'outside the pack'(probably because of their 'noice'). Females are slightly more prone to become more of a handful, but if treated with firmness, love, and atttention, they will listen/obey and love you back forever. -They like cuddling, they're caring, friendly, and super fast!
i had one when i was a kid. i can say that is was definitely the best dog ive ever had. that dog was like my mom when i was little.. i would ride on her back like a horse and she would just walk around the house with me like it was nothing. she was my snuggle buddy, anywhere i was she would curl up against me and pass out. i had a seizure and she ran upstairs and got my mom, she saved my life. Some people are truly very shallow if they think the ridge makes that breed. My grand daughter just got a pup and he is spectacular.
100%
I had two ridgebacks back to back growing up , one from when i was born -8yrs old and one from 9 to 21. I cried for each one for a couple days. they're just another family member they're amazing dogs! i ll be getting one of my own as soon as i get a house with a big backyard

Grew up with these dogs at home in SA. Constantly got knocked off my feet running around the garden but they are the best friends ever!! Love them!
I had a brown RR I got her in 1984 and she lived until 1998. Her name was Biskit. Smartest dog ever!
I love my Ridgeback. He has a great sense of humor and because of him a couple of my family members now want one. I agree, they like to be where you are and will conform to your lifestyle. i have a have lab ridgeback too, he's ten but still acts like a four year old dog and is the best dog breed i've had
I miss our Rhodesian Ridgeback. He was the smartest and most amazing friend.
I love my past and present rhodesians i was raised with one since i was born and he was very gentle and loving my little brother used to sleep on top of his back
Add to the above, they are world-class sleepers. LOL Absolutely wonderful dog. We've had three and they've been the BEST dog friends ever.
Love ridgebacks. When I was a kid one saved me from getting attacked by a huge German Shepherd police dog. She jumped between us so I could get away. Won't ever forget her, she was a good girl.

I had one... and he was just incredible!
My RR is 14 and the sweetest dog alive. She's a little chubby since she's old but boy do we love her :)
We got a puppy at 6 weeks old that was supposedly a 'labrador retriever mix'
he's fully grown now and we've only just figured out that he's a rhodesian...definitely not disappointed :)
This Rhodesians are great I have a 9 year old rhode and he is awesome he is so laid back and calm
It's amazing how the Rhodesian and the Thai Ridgeback both have nearly identical temperament. Both are such wonderful breeds of dogs, two of the most loyal, courageous canine friends any human could ask for.

Am getting my puppy in 5 weeks time and cannot wait.. She will love running around here in the African bushveld.
We've got one at home! He's huge and gentle. They only fight when taunted. most beautiful dog EVA !!!

I would never leave my dog anywhere out of sight. If he got lost. I would lockdown the city until he is found.
I agree! When I was born we had a Ridgey, he died at age 12, one of the best dogs ever :( But we got another one from the same breeder (new pup was our old dogs great uncle I think). He is now 6! Thumbs up all those who have a ridgie and cannot imagine ever having a different breed!
Someday I would love to see another Anthromorphic animated film with all of these different dog and cat breeds represented as aspects of society. I can totally see a Special Forces team made up of these fabulous animals!
Ridgeback forever :) I have my one and its my love for over 6 years... :)
I have had two of these dogs the first just died a few years ago at 14 years old and my one now is 4 yrs old and the most adorabley beautiful dog iv ever seen

I have a rhodesian ridgeback. his name is Jasper.
I have a brindle colored RR. He is a great dog. His name is Steve.
They are incredibly smart and fiercely loyal. I love mine.
Lol, nice way to put it mate. I was laughing so loud that tears was coming out from my eyes.

I love mine little rhodey! Only eight months old and he's huge! Tell you what.
Thinking about breeding Indiana. He is 3 years old and purebred with papers. Really would love to have one of his puppies! He is just perfect!!
I have one. She is amazing!!!
i have a ridgeback and he is happy to just sit around but when you play with him because he is only 2 years he is very powerful
This dog almost sounds too good to be true!
These dogs do not like the cold, but I know of some in Alaska that are living a great life. You will have to buy it a warm coat, and if you are in a city that salts the streets, boots are recommended as well.

Born and bred in South Africa, just like me.
I love my RR, Zepher, but he's a little baby. He's very protective of my family but he's afraid of cats. I love him xD
I have one and he's a beautiful dog, disobeys me a bit. He's 5 years old and a big puppy :D
I love how this dog sometimes seems to "frown" like: "You want ME to fetch the stick YOU just threw away? Duuuh...!"
They are great mates!
i have a ridgback and he has 1 eye i love him..

One day I found this dog on my porch and we kept her
I have a 7 month old rr girl called nala defo the best dog around we have had a great bond since I traveled so far to get her and since that day she has followed me everywhere bit of a nightmare when my wife takes her out but hey who didn't used to play up for the babysitter!!!lol if all go's to plan she will have pups so there will be me more around.

I want this dog!
@laurascr I grew up with allergies (hay fever) and I had several Rhodesian Ridgebacks in the home. If your skin is sensitive to 'spiky' hair, that might be a problem. They don't lose hair at all, though.
This sounds like tha ultimate athletic dog
You need to be a "consistent" (not strict), positive, experienced leader / owner. They deserve the best .. they will give you the best.
I want this dog so bad as a running companion, but my parents don't want a big dog so i'll just have to wait a couple of years :/
I had a friend who had two of these and they were so well trained they would not let you out of your car unless the owner allowed them too. I own a 100 lb pitbull and he's a big baby compared to these dogs.
They dont need an hour of exercise everyday. About 45 min every other day is perfect with about 30 minute walks twice a day, works grand.
Odorless? They aren't. - Also you'll find ridgeback hair in places you wouldn't imagine.

-They like cuddling, they're caring, friendly, and super fast!
Very good!
I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback called Jedrick! BEST BREED IN THE WORLD!!!!!!
