    I own both (black dial Explorer II, and no date sub though) and I prefer the Explorer II over my sub. It’s an awesome looking watch that also flies under the radar and is one heck of a daily tool watch.

      @@captainmike3557 Yeah, I am very careful with my watches. But sometimes I get a tiny scratch on the watch case and it drives me crazy. If it's on a big surface I can remove it with polishing cloth. But sometimes it's harder to remove when it's next to an area with brushed polishing.

      The Explorer II is designed for cavers. Our gear gets beaten up. Worrying about scratches… that’s for surface-dwellers.

    Submariner is fairly easy to get at some stores. Where I’m currently located about six months and like I told you before my dad got three black sub dates within one year between two stores. Got two within six months from the same store… I’ve been on the list for the explorer II polar at a California store for a couple years. Most stores I’ve spoken to said they only receive about 1-2 polars per year.

    On durability, ceramic bezel can cracked if drop or hit on it. Hence Rolex still prefer metal bezel for the Explorer II

      @@KLucero22 it is true, I was also thinking about it but since the sapphire crystal is unavoidable unless they want plexiglass, then steel bezel is a choice to eliminate 1 possibility.

    The waiting list time seems crazy, only 8 months to a year? Everywhere it’s plus 3 years. I’m new to your channel, so I don’t know your collection. How many watches do you have from your AD since your wait is so short? 😅

    I like your channel Cheyne. I think the content is good and I like that you have a user point of view as someone who truly uses them professionally out in the field. There are a lot of "experts" out there that do the specs and get into all of that but true daily performance and perspective is important to me. I own both of these as well, in prior model and love them. I also do like your art work, trying to figure out a nice one for above a bed in a guest room. My wife and I really love mountains. Do you have any suggestions? :) Keep up the great work my friend.

    I like your channel, Cheyne. A lot of content creators review watches; you USE your watches!
    I must say, I really like having a timing bezel for timing random stuff like burgers on the grill. If that bezel on the Explorer II turned, it would be the perfect watch for me.

    I own both explorer 2 polar and sub no date both mid 2023 purchases new from AD and love them both immensely, but I just ordered the new Blancpain fifty fathoms 42mm blue in Ti23 and it's awesome.

      @@cheynewalls guess demand is really different in each country..
      i live in the capital city and wearing a famous rolex model isnt safe in some districts.. im searching for a good daily beater thats not that recognisable as Rolex... or a Rolex model that not very recognisable like the Explorer1 & 2.. but im kinda leaning towards the Omega seamaster diver 300 white dial.. cause of the price /looks/availability /less recognisable.. + my boss has a Submariner anyway, it wont be a good idea to show up as if im the boss (office job) 😂 the other boss has a blue seamaster tho...
      my current beater/work watch is Unimatic U1.
      any recommendation of which watch ?

      The Polar dial Explorer II is more popular now than its ever been. According to comments on this channel people are waiting 8 to 16 months on a waiting list. Also Rolex doesn't make as many Polar dials as they do black dials. Cheers

    Submariner all day long over the Explorer II. The glidelock clasp alone is a huge advantage. But overall, it’s just a more versatile watch.

      Thank you, I think you are talking about my leather strap? Its a custom strap I picked up when I was visiting Taiwan. It was so hot and humid I wanted something other that the metal bracelet. Cheers

    The most iconic watch of all time is the jubilee bracelet fluted bezel Datejust.
    The Submariner is invisible to anyone not into watches.
    The Datejust on the other hand is recognised around the world by people that have no interest in watches.

      I think they are the type of watches that can be classified as anything, beater, luxury, sport, dress, and field watch. A luxury time piece that is tough, durable and very accurate, that can be worn in the most inhospitable environment all the way to any high-end luxury event.

    The sub is not the right choice, unless you are a diver!! Save yourself a ton and get yourself a Hamilton, best field watches.

      Which Hamilton watch? I had one of there Khaki Aviation and it keep the worst time. So bad I just got ride of it. I like the design of most their watches. Do they have any certified movements? After about two decades of using watches in the field, I have learned if a watch or it's moment isn't COSC, METAS or ISO 6425 certified it usually doesn't last long. Cheers

      Well I do. Its the only watch I have found that can withstand all the harsh environments I go to photograph and is well designed for constant traveling. I have tried G-shocks and watches with batteries, but they always die on my when I'm out snow camping. Other mechanical watches aren't as accurate as I would like, but with Rolex +2/-2 seconds a day its perfect. A Rolex is very durable, relabel and accurate, both in short term and long term. It is the best ever tool watch.

    Regarding durability: I think EXP2 wins out - better shock protection, and no rotating bezel, ceramic insert, or glidelock clasp, which are additional points of failure. I suppose the Submariner is more durable if you are a saturation diver.

      All very good points, I can just say that I have dropped and hard hit my Rolex Submariner on rocks, dirt and trees many many times. I can't believe that ceramic bezel still (to this day) shows no signs of its harsh treatment. Yes the Explorer II has handle similar punishment, but it has left deep scratches and dents, which I love, but most people don't. That is why I graded how I did. My Rolex Explorer II looks beat up and used (again I love that), My Submariner almost looks brand new, still.

I own a pre-ceramic sub and it is incredibly durable, although the aluminum bezel does show some patina (which I don't mind). On a side note: as unbelievable as this sounds, shortly after posting my earlier comment, my AD called me and I am now the proud owner of a white-dial Explorer 2. How crazy is that!

      What Rolex watches do you or have you owned? What experience makes you think that? I can say from 20 years of experience using watches in the field that the Rolex Explorer II & Submariner are the best tool watches I have come across. I have owned many watches, including G-shocks, Omegas, Breitling, Panerai and Longines. All great watches, but none are as good of tool watches as the two Rolexs I now own. Cheers

      If you remember 6 or 7 years ago all most all Rolex watches could be found well below retail, I wouldn't say RIP, it was just a crazy market flux. Now we are in a more stable market. Still amazing the Rolex market, what other products can you use for a year or two and then sell that product for nearly what you paid new, not many. Either way not going to sell my beloved Rolex watches, planning on handing them down to the next generation.

    Ffs I bought my first omega at Costco. Wait was about a minute at the window you get the expensive stuff at. My first Rolex was 2 year old sub and price was 40% off of the new one, which the store had several.
