    I own both and would highly recommend the Explorer as an everyday watch. 36mm is the perfect size as it flies under the radar. I have a 7.25 inch wrist and wear 36mm watch with no issues. Traditional gents watch for less money and more available than the Sub.

      Yeah its a everyday watch, really hoping they bump back to 39mm and/or white dial.

      yep. I have a 7.75in wrist and love mine. I thought it was a hair small after wearing mostly 42mm divers but I got used to it and now it is my favorite watch and the size I was so worried about is its best asset. It slides under my cuff and doesnt get hung up on a jacket, seatbelt or backpack strap. I dont have to think about it.

      @MattD86 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All about preference. I just bought the new 40mm for my 6.75 in wrist and it looks incredible. I found the new 36mm model far too dainty. The dial was fine I guess but the 19mm bracelet tapered down to 14mm felt and looked silly to me.

      The Sub all the way, the most versatile, iconic, and masculine of all Rolex watches.
      The explorer is too bland, 36mm is more of a large ladies watch. The 39mm explorer just doesn't make my toes tingle.

  • @JasonMilner
    @JasonMilner ปีที่แล้ว +38

    Perfect summary of the two. I've had an Explorer for a little over a year now, & just recently added a submariner to my collection, & you're absolutely right about the sub being. little too much when you're wearing a suit, whereas the Explorer can do it all. One other point to consider with the Sub is that sadly its iconic design can be quite an attraction to thieves, so I tend not to wear it when I'm out and about in town. Personally I'm considering adding a G-Shock to my collection for those situations.

    I’d definitely go Explorer. It’s the perfect size, understated, and under the radar of most people. I can’t afford one, but I have a Tudor Black Bay 36, which ticks very similar boxes - I’d be worried to wear a sub when I’m out and about, given the rise in watch thefts.

    Having a 16610 Submariner and then buying a 124270 Explorer I found the latter a little underwhelming initially. However the Explorer’s sheer versatility just gets to you and it’s pretty much my daily wear. Only watch you really need in my humble opinion so would be my choice as well.

    Having a 6.25 wrist, I opted for an Explorer for it's size and versatility, not to mention it being so elegant. I had the choice of getting a Sub but found it a bit too large for my wrist especially the long clasp. Also have a BB58 which I think offers a ton of value and fills the divers itch. Whilst I like the EX 39 (the only one my wrists could possibly use because the 36mm is more like 35.5mm and is way too small for many men), the bezel being steel would get scratched to high heaven if I wore it as a beater, so while I do like its simple classy looks, I would purchase the sub definitely. The ceramic bezel will last way longer and look "new" for much longer. But I think the new sub releases should have a third colour to add more variety to the dial (like a red etc), it's a bit boring now in just black when the watch is basically the worlds number 1 homage watch.

    Review is well done. However, I'd have compared the 39 or 40 Explorer to the Sub, rather than the 36 Explorer, to make the comparison more apples and oranges rather than apples and grapes...when speaking of size or wrist presence. I have the 39 Explorer and a neo-vintage 40mm Pepsi GMT-Master (which, of course, parallels the 40mm Sub, size-wise), and I find the look and feel of the two to be quite distinct though equally pleasing to the eye and equally comfortable on the wrist. The two make for a versatile Rolex mini-collection, with the GMT on the more sporty side and the Explorer, despite its 'tooliness', on the more casual, business-suit, even dressy side.

    I own both of these like many others commenting and there is definitely a place for both in a collection, they both serve different purposes. As a daily wear, 100% the 36mm explorer. It's much lighter than the sub (around 119g vs 150g); the 40mm explorer has less purpose in my opinion as it is heavier and is a similar size to the other rolex models. The 36mm and has a slimmer bracelet compared with the submariner and slightly lower profile case, meaning it is comfortable for daily wear, to the point you forget you're wearing it. It is more discreet, easily slides under the cuff and flies under the radar.
    The submariner is a great alternative to the daily watch, ideal for gym & sports incl. swimming, meetings, holidays & social occasions where the extra weight and extra attention isn't an issue. I disagree that the submariner can't be worn formally, the same goes for the GMT, they are iconic and classy. Bond often seen wearing the submariner formally in the movies. A stainless-steel 5711 is also a dive watch and can be worn formally, however, I think the design and size & thickness does have a part to play as the Omega Ploprof or Sea-Dweller Deep Sea would be unsuitable. The ceramic bezel, polished sides on the case, bracelet & bezel grip and white gold hands & hour markers helps the sub wear well formally wear. I would typically choose a precious metal day-date or daytona for formal occasions though as they will do this better.
    If I was buying just one, I would go for the 124270 explorer if it was to be worn daily, and the no-date submariner if it was being worn a few days a week/occasionally then get the explorer later.

    As a thought exercise it would be interesting to go back in time to when mid 30s millimetres sizing was the norm and present a 40mm or larger watch for consideration. I suspect there would be a fair amount of amusement with comments such as - "clown's watch" - "you look like a child wearing their Father's watch" - etc. It's just perception, as is much of anything really.

    The 39/40 mm Explorer is a nearer comparison to the Submariner in this video as it is a similar size. The Sub is a more robust watch with its ceramic bezel and crown guard protection.

    I live in Missouri, where there’s no ocean, and around here when someone wears a dive watch he looks a bit pretentious. So in choosing between these two take into account where you live and what you do for a hobby. As regards the Bond connection - he’s a former navy commander and does a lot of diving in the books, so it actually fits his job. In any case, a dive watch isn’t really all that necessary even for a diver; it’s a mere convenience. No diver with any brains would go below 100 feet for fear of “the bends,” and if you can’t tell how much air you have in your tank by looking at an Explorer then you’re too stupid to be trusted as a diving partner.
    Finally, I suspect that a real spy would go for the Explorer as a daily driver anyway. I can imagine SMERSH assassins being told “Be on the lookout for some guy wearing the flashiest watch available. It’s probably Bond. James Bond.”

    Very well presented. Understand that from a grammatical perspective, Rolex is a company. So, any verbs associated with a single company need to be in the singular, not the plural. Quite often, people use the plural form because a single company is often made up of many people. Carry on!

Moser for the rare occasion when I "dress up" and a Stowa or Laco Flieger. I'm a simple guy. And let's be honest, people wear Rolex because they say Rolex on them. Love both watches but the Explorer has been my favourite watch for about 20 years. A true 1 watch collection due to its versatility with straps alone, black, brown leather, steel, rubber, Nato. They all look good on it. Not many watches look at home while hiking, sailing and mountaineering (Designed for it) but also look just as at home with a Suit or Tux. Because before Rolex became the no1 (arguably) status symbol for success during the 80's (It was the 80's power icon), it was the G-Shock sports watch for 40 years beforehand. Explorer for me, hopefully in the near future.
    The only real decision would be 36mm or 39mm, as I nearly have an 8" wrist, 39mm might be the better option but the 36mm just looks better.
