  • Podcasting vs. TH-cam - which is better?
Well, there's a lot to discuss here, from potential reach and find-ability, to competition, engagement and ease of creation.
In this video, I go over each of those specific categories, and more, to help us determine which is better, starting a podcast, or starting a youtube channel.
Since starting this journey back in 2009, I've recorded over 1,300 episodes of podcasts, and I've produced hundreds of videos. Both channels have been successful with over 50 million downloads of the podcast, and (as of this week) surpassing 100,000 subscribers on TH-cam.
Let's discuss. Also, this is a replay of a live video, so you may see the chat stream, and feel free to interact and discuss in the comment section as well!
Replay viewers: if you answer this question below, you are entered into a drawing to win an #AskPat T-shirt, and a signed copy of my book, #WillItFly, on next week's live call:
What topic would you like me to discuss next in a similar format to this video? What vs what, or other?

Update as of April, 2019 - latest data shows there are still only 660,000 active podcasts, still well under 1 million. Isn't that insane? It's picking up speed though, so if you're at all interested in starting a podcast, nows a good time to get in while we're still "early"!

Hi Pat, I was surprised to hear the number of 500 million TH-cam channels? How many of them are active? Because don't all TH-cam accounts officially count as a channel even if they don't upload a clip to it?

What about Garyvee that shares in his Podcast some keynote or interview audio? It doesn't seems to affect the "experience". The only thing I hate on a interview is that he is the only one using mic

Loved this. I just started my podcast this year because I love being able to just pull out my mic and speak without having to have the lighting and camera and all that for video, plus I am camera shy, I can do it of course but the purity of my message doesn't come through as strong. I LOVE podcasting and I am excited to see where it goes by the end of the year!

Pat, clearly, I listened to this way beyond your contest question, but I can tell you this.
I have chosen Podcasting. I am ready to launch, working on interviewing high-performance people. I am going to record the sessions of my "talking head" so that I can syndicate it on TH-cam.
Phase two will be to included video of both ends of the conversation. I am still mastering the audio and podcast first.
I consume BOTH your TH-cam and Podcast content.

Great video Pat! I use both platforms and I started back in 2009 - things were much simpler back then. Just an FYI - you can LIVE STREAM your podcast with Spreaker. It's a really cool platform and even with the mobile app you can add intros, outros, background music and sound effects while you are live. Rob Greenlee is the go-to guy for Spreaker.

Absolutely LOVE this and the format! Thank you so much for clarifying this so articulately. I have been going back and forth between which to start with and this has given me some really good things to consider. Something I would really like to understand about each of these is, realistically, how much time does each commitment take up. I am very quick to say yes to an idea but then always seem to underestimate how long everything takes to do consistently. What do you have to do yourself vs what can you ask someone else to do with each of these platforms, and how does that flow over time work. i.e. starting from you doing everything to you only doing X. Thanks so much xx

    Congrats on the 100K subscribers!!!!!!!
Question: You mentioned about doing both podcasting and/or TH-cam Channel --> what are your thoughts about "both" in the way that someone like Jocko Willink does with his "Jocko Podcast"?
Like the idea of doing the podcast but with the way he video records him doing that and being able to use it "as-is" for both.
Even if it was a webcam or Recorded Skype/Zoom seems to be easier to be able to post to both but "repurpose" short video segments of the podcast for social media and TH-cam bites.
    Thoughts? Suggestions?

Very timely Pat. I was weighing up which route to go because I love 'playing' with video but I think the learning curve to cut through is a lot steeper. On the flip-side I enjoy the batch-processing nature podcasts offer.

    • @scotttovey
      @scotttovey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ryan.
You can record your audio podcast using video and export the audio for editing. By doing this, you will be able to create podcasts while at the same time recording video for you to practice on.
Now, since you're focus is on podcasts, you can reduce the learning curve of videos by taking a week or two to practice doing a single editing function that you need to learn for the videos.
Remember that in learning anything, if you divide it, you can conquer it without feeling like a confused idiot which is the human response to the information overload that our modern educational system uses.
It's most likely the reason that standardized tests continue to decline.Children are being overloaded with information in an attempt to obtain good standardized test scores, rather than being taught to learn.

  • @neroresurrected
    @neroresurrected 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Love the video, I’m not sure it’s a fair comparison though between the two because they are different mediums that appeal to different kinds of people in general. I would also say that it is highly subjective and ultimately a personal choice in the end. It’s blatantly obvious that the argument tends to favor TH-cam in the long run. I personally didn’t have to even see the whole video conclusion to simply know the the argument was won by TH-cam hands down in my opinion. Just the first criteria of competition alone spoke volumes and ended the debate for me. Podcasting does really well due to The simplicity in the creative process and getting started to begin with. And with close to a million channels is quite impressive and certainly displays an enormous potential for continued growth which would make it appealing to most people starting out.
However podcasting simply cannot touch the reach to a general audience that TH-cam already does on daily basis. 500 million channels and counting speaks for itself. I would say that might be because we tend to be more visual than anything else in today’s day and age. If The idea is to get our message across to people and generate an audience in your respective market and therefore grow both your content, reach and your audience, TH-cam owns this arena at the present moment and has I previously mentioned it’s not even close.
Don’t get me wrong I love podcasting and I think it has a future still despite the exponential growth of TH-cam even today but the facts and figures illustrate that podcasting tailors to a smaller sized audience and is really marketed and appealing to a certain kind of person who simply engages more with the audio experience than not. In the end I has previously noted it’s a personal choice for everyone.
On a side note: just asks yourselves this question? Pat has this video on TH-cam. Would he generate an equal if not more of a response by his audience if this video were a podcast episode on his channel?

Congrats on over 100K Pat! My replay Q: it seems you just recently ramped up your TH-cam channel. To what do you attribute your quick growth (quick based on your recent vids)? Also, I’ve had both podcast (on which you’ve been a guest) and TH-cam channel. I currently prefer YT as it allows the audience to connect with you both visually and vocally, plus they can get to know your teachings as well as behind-the-scenes/day-in-the-life type vlogs. Hard to do that on a podcast. (-Mommy Seed, Nikki)

TH-cam has a very set structure of content creation. The platform, the format, the audience, the advertisements, etc. It is a lot more friendly for creators (I think patreon is catching up in its own little way).
The main problem with podcasting (till now) is that there isn't a fixed platform where potential & active podcast listeners go to. Hence, no suggested podcasts, detailed analytics, etc are there to help the format. Spotify has some channels. But I think there is room for "the one platform" in the market which will become the "primary" place to hangout for podcast consumers.
I agree, podcast listeners are more dedicated than youtube's audience XD

LOL!!! Alexa heard you say "spotify!"
Just wanted to say, I agree with your evaluation (as if MY opinion matters)... the cool thing is that TH-cam also offers a LOT of the same benefits of podcasts (such as embedding in your blog post, etc), but "share-ability" is MUCH easier with TH-cam. Using TH-cam (with video) gives you the ability to export audio for podcasts which helps you promote your TH-cam channel, or your blog post, which you can use to promote your TH-cam channel.

Thanks Theresa! Let me just ask, what’s a bigger fear, someone saying “not at the moment” of you ask, or years down the road wishing you had done it sooner? The worst than could happen is nothing compared to the best that can happen if you step outside that zone of comfort. You got this! And if you know you have something helpful to share, it’s your obligation to go out and spread that message. Your fear could get in the way of helping people, and that’s the one thing I think about all the time that keeps pushing me forward.

I've seen a lot of vids and heard a lot of podcasts, even bought a lot of courses... but, I've not found a SINGLE course (or series) that spells out a PLAN that is easily duplicable for GETTING STARTED from step one to step done.

I do both TH-cam and Podcasting. I would rather Podcast instead of TH-cam because I can pickup my Zoom H4n Pro Recorder with my Dynamic Mic and record one or ten podcasts, depending where I’m at, weather it be at a locksmith convention or metal detecting an old home from back in the 1800’s. I enjoy listening and watching your shows. I’m a subscriber.

I started with Podcasting. It went well, though I stopped podcasting when it was costing more for hosting than what I was making. I am pivoting to TH-cam because it's cheeper to maintain and I have a higher chance of making a return on my investment sooner than later.

I guess you already know I have a photography podcast, because I'm around quite often... But Lately I started my TH-cam channel.
It's hard to chose, because they are quite different and I really think they have fairly different audiences, so I'd say both :)
Just as it is right now!

Hey Pat. To answer your CTA - I think it would be interesting to compare hosting teaching or education series via two different types of video platforms.
Would be you compare teaching via TH-cam (Free Content) vs Teaching via Lynda / Teachable / etc. (Paid Content)
I believe it was Amy Porterfield who said you know you've given away enough free content when you think to yourself, "I should be charging for this", but where exactly do you draw that line?
Do you give enough information to teach someone and then fill in the details on the paid platform?
Do you use TH-cam to drive traffic / create interest in your paid content?
Do you create the paid content first so you can have something to point people to?
Or do you create the TH-cam content to gain followers and then in the future move them to paid teaching? I assume you would get them on your e-mail list via a magnet so you can get them into your paid course funnel at a later time.
Thanks again Pat. I'm loving the new YT series. And thanks for the help this week. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.
    #teamflynn for the win!

I am looking into the podcast area still and have gotten as far as I have the issue that has gotten me stuck is how to easily perform interviews without trouble. Everything I have been trying to do seems to be causing headaches and I am really getting frustrated. I have started to follow your youtube as it did get my attention, thank you. I am quite far in building my podcast site but this issue with the desire to do interviews and not finding software is really frustrating. If you can assist I would be quite appreciative.

I started my TH-cam channel about three months ago and have been struggling to get subscribers. I started my podcast about a month ago. I have a lot more listeners on my podcast than I have viewers on TH-cam. So in my experience, as a brand new channel without a network, it’s easier and faster to get a foothold as a podcaster than a youtuber. I think much of this has to do with the way the TH-cam algorithm favors large, popular channels because that’s where they make more money. That’s just my experience from the past few weeks of doing both.
I really enjoy making videos, but it is a lot more work and generally takes a lot more planning. I can crank out a podcast episode in an hour from recording to editing.

Pat Flynn Wow, thank you! My podcast is called Contribution: conversations with amazing Muslims and I have already recorded with a long list of amazing guests. However, my niche is Muslim writers and this is the group I am creating content, community and courses for so I think a podcast for this niche should be next on my list. What do you think? Site is www.muslimcontribution.com if you have time to check it out :)

Great video as usual @PATFLYNN, Love how you saved both platforms smoothly done. I have a few questions, I'll just ask 1 right now. I know monetization wasn't one of the comparisons made but I would love to ask you when it comes to earning which one would be greater/quicker profitabilty, if you could make the comparison from the standpoint of a NEWBIE who had to make the choice of Podcasting or Youtubing-(Is that a word). (not sure if its possible given the fact that TH-cam has an unfair advantage over podcasting as it is reaping all the followers you already have from SPI). Additionally I would like to suggest a Monetization of TH-cam as a next video topic, I know you briefly mentioned ADSENSE when you where with Sean Cannell of THINK MEDIA! But what is that ADSENSE and those other ways that he was referring to. ALSO .. WE WANT THE BIG REVEAL OF THE GOLDEN PLAY BUTTON WHEN IT ARRIVES>> THANKS !! Great Job, as usual #TeamFlynn #100000SubscibersPATFLYNN #ELONMUSK #ATTENTIONELONMUSK #ELONMUSKTATICSINATELSA #HAPPY

    Good points, thank you!
However, If I'm listening music in TH-cam, I don't care about the visuals, cause I'm really there for the music. If I'm making podcasts in TH-cam, where I tell stories, I think it's the same thing. The voice, the story and the whole atmosphere comes from the audio. So in that perspective I really don't feel that there's any need for making any exciting visuals. Just plain picture. Maybe that familiar logo you use everywhere, what you are known for.
But of course, it totally depends what kind of podcast you are doing.
