“Having a bunch of cats around is good. If you're feeling bad, just look at the cats, you'll feel better, because they know that everything is, just as it is.” - Charles Bukowski, On Cats -
Awesome quote, though it only applies to cats who’s needs are met including love. Mistreated cats have more of a tweaked out oversensitive vibe going for them. I think if I lived the life of a well cared for house cat the peace and joy would radiate off me as well.
@@michaelnice93 Spot on. I feed a stray cat sometimes(whenever I see her around) in my neighborhood, she had a tragic life as she lost all of her kittens either by road accidents or eaten by other stray dogs. Although she expresses clearly that she is hungry and want some food, she never let anyone touch or pet her, and scratches anyone who tries to touch her. As a cat lover myself I am tempted to pet her every time I give her food, but I accept her boundaries and never touched her till now, so there is kind of an understanding between us. This case could've been different if the tragedy part had not happened to her.
cats are essentially buddhist in nature...they just do what is needed without getting hung up on endless details...they are also minimalists...the highest understanding is that nothing is happening and nothing exists...next lower than this is life is pointless and nothing matters...us humans can make up all sorts of reasons for why any one thing or number of things matter or are important coz we cling to dualistic details but the cat is more in oneness mode not questioning things at all and being aware in the present moment..the cat can kill and in a few moments later show complete composure with no change in their being...there is no sense of guilt or remorse and they move on...although it is a precept not to kill...to move on is buddhism...to be aware in the present...not dwellong on past or future thoughts...if one can have no thought and be beyond mind for periods it is a great relief...some folks have thought of cats as cold assholes full of selfishness but actually folks have also considered buddhists in this light because we don't react but just walk away...to some it can seem we just don't care about anything but it is wise to avoid sh!t rather than jump into it...it's the asian way really...all of asia is energy of yin...the night...the feminine..the cool...the back channel way....the mystery...the west is yang....all up front and open and direct and over the top and in your face...asians have a style which is flavoured by the energy of yin...I should know I have lived in south east asia over 25 years...hmmm...I may buy a cat or a few soon...I have a mouse in my room and can't find a trap to buy but cat can solve this issue quickly
@@michaelnice93 yes around my room there are stray cats everywhere...cat poo all through the stairwells and often cats making their high pitched noises and fighting at night and can hear their bodies falling onto tin roofs...it's actually a seriously cat infested sh!thole but I know they must keep the rat and mouse numbers down..I have tried to get near a few but they are too aware and always run away....I've had them just sit outside my door and stare at me which is pretty trippy...have given them food but not in the habit for every day...I've given stuff and they eat a little and leave the rest or don't touch it at all...point being they don't need human assistance for survival...it's possible that cats actually think they are smarter than us because we appear to be filled with confusion and problems...I have put fresh chili's in the stairwell to prevent cats from crapping there but they crap all over them...have put bottles of water there and they still crap all in the corner...someoone has thrown piles of dirt on all the cat crap...whoever the cat is he is sending a message that he will sh!t there as he likes and nobody can stop it...there are so many other places he can do it in but he (assuming it's male due to the dominant behaviour) just continues to hammer that corner and make it disgusting to walk past only after a week...I refuse to get out there to clean it...ain't my job...I put chili's and water and it don't deter him from pooing there...it probably has to do with territory...he marks his spot and other cats crossing that point could be attacked...the fights at night are about 4 times a week and they are beauties going for 5 or 10 minutes...across from my room there are cats living in abandoned rooms...cats walking over the roof tops and these same cats I see down on the street sometimes eating food out of the garbage bags on the street...they sleep on verandas and sometimes fight over there too..big trees around so I'd say they jump into the tree and hop down branches to get to the street...hmmm...cats are weird creatures...they really don't seem to give a sh!t about anyone or anything and this is the ideal way to be...I was once taking care of a schizophrenic girl I took off the street in thailand and we got to a buddhist temple and the monk saw that she was dragging me down and he said "its ok to be selfish....look after yourself and don't get in trouble helping another"...it turned out she was massive trouble for me and I ended up arrested and in jail because of her...long story
"Not many have style Not many can keep style I have seen dogs with more style than men, although not many dogs have style. Cats have it with abundance." - also Bukowski
A big cat saw a little cat chasing its tail and asked, “Why are you chasing your tail so?” Said the kitten, “I have learned that the best thing for a cat is happiness, and that happiness is in my tail. Therefore, I am chasing it: and when I catch it, I shall have happiness.” Said the old cat, “My son, I, too, have paid attention to the problems of the universe. I too, have judged that happiness is in my tail But, I have noticed that whenever I chase after it, it keeps running away from me, and when I go about my business, it just seems to come after me wherever I go.” ❤️🚀🌙
I've had lots of cats, they all have different personalities. I had one named Chocolate who adored me. When I picked her up she would relax completely and let me hold and pet her as long as I liked. When it was relaxing time she would sit with me, at night she would sleep in my bed, and in the morning she would gently poke her nose against mine to be let out so she could eat. She was partially an outside cat. As a kitten her mother took her back but I called her name and she meowed until I found her again. Another time someone trapped her and I called her and again she meowed until I could find her and when I released her she was clearly elated, she rubbed up against my legs and had the jauntiest little walk home. Finally on the sad day she died, a racoon attacked her while she was outside in the bushes and she limped back home, I put her on my bed and she put her paw in my hand until she was near the end. Then she crawled under my bad so I wouldn't have to watch her die. Nobody can tell me cats don't care after that. I think that cat cared about me alot, as I did for her. I remember when I put a collar on her for the first time she seemed so proud to be formally part of my family. I still carry that collar with me to this day. I'll never forget that experience. It changed my perspective on just how smart and caring animals can be, as long as you raise them with care.
I feel like some of this is human personification, but I get what you mean, your cat was happy because it you, and you made them happy, naturally cats hide when wounded or injured to hide from any predator looking to take advantage. Overall, nice story though.
@@ironwill2613 You obviously don’t truly understand felines. You’re missing out. Humans have a natural tendency to personify. However, that doesn’t change the fact that a cat, whether being fantasized about by a human or not, is a complex little thinking creature with emotions. Those are just attributes they have whether a human thinks it or not. They are who they are! As they develop a bond/ relationship with a human these attributes become more obvious as the two individuals from different species learn to communicate, trust and enjoy each other’s qualities. It’s a joy for both!
I'm so sorry for your loss and I feel your every word, I currently have 3 cats and two dogs and I lost Cookie my kitty companion of 15 years 3 years ago... it was a great loss, he was my son and to this day I can never forget our beautiful times together. It is heartbreaking when we lose our furry family members and I hope my current lovely babies will always be happy and healthy.
@@littlebirdie2 lol, I thought that sentiment was an attack, but yknow, if your point is just that two individual minds bonded and enjoyed each others existence through repetition and trust then yeah, can't really argue with that, that's the nature of any creature that has enough mental capacity to form social structure. I think people can downplay animals recognition of death and sadness, but they experience that like any other creature, it's just that they have very little means to communicate and have much more interest in personal experiences than that of empathizing with another persons experience. Like this video stated, humans kinda obsess over misery and therefore we think nothing can feel pain like us.
Two cats stuck on a tree for days. One was put in a rescue net and jumped out of it back onto the tree, the other one just sat there while the net was put over it and it plunged into it, spinning wildly for a moment to disentangle, was super-cool.
That’s all well and good but without humans around , you wouldn’t have developed the cognitive skills needed to be aware of that. It’s good to love animals but stop putting them on a pedi stool as if they replicate yahweh.
@@killertofu What’s wrong with you? Did I ever say that? Do you know how to read? Do you understand the written word? Animals are a reflection of the Creator!
@@gemcatgirl you literally gave a red carpet to animals saying they are the cause for your understanding of unconditional love and cat taught self worth. Your parents love or lack of love gave you a metric to be aware of unconditional love. Self worth is determined by your decisions. Animals are a extension of our behavior (not creator),that I agree but to give them credit for such things seem very naive when there are immediate causes that are better suited to receive that praise. You are used to domesticated animals, they have been bred over the years to let us raise them. We literally make them our slaves while praising them for not acting on their instincts. If you said that about a non demosticatd animal not the common species, then I think it would have more validity. Domesticated animals are not true love but forced love
@@gemcatgirl and I’m not bashing you or anything. I just see some ppl who like to praise animals for some reason bc they aren’t pleased with the humans of their environment or happy with society norms etc. I’m saying this in general who put animals above humans. I once used to be the guy who said animals above all but how naive I was
*MINDFULNESS* A cat does not worry about what they could have done differently in the past or worry about what they need to do in the future. Instead they live IN THE MOMENT. Which is why they are so 'present' and free of anxiety and love life so much. We can all learn from cats
I have met some very anxious cats and even kind of psycotic ones, however more the exception than the rule ... I wonder if is because of too much interaction with humans? 🤔
They don't worry about it because they learn from the past and don't repeat stupid stuff in the future. I do not think every cat is free of anxiety. I have seen some horrible situations, and those cats are anything but free of anxiety. It is easy to bond with a cat but the onus is on you to facilitate that bond, you must be the first one to say "I love you" and ask him/her nicely to love you back.
While I think that situation is pretty rare in cats, the cat philosophy is more of a "don't sweat the small things" vibe. A good way to get out of your own head and live a more content and stoic life. I don't think the point of the video was to feel nothing if your best friend or relative dies.
@@xSayPleasex Yes, true. Even in Stoicism, they suggest that it's healthy to feel grieve but not for a long time. I was just referring to my own experience with cats.
cats are smarter than people because they don't give a sh!t and stay in the present moment...humans care too much and are always worrying and tied up in confusion brooding on past or future thoughts...human is the most messed up creature on the planet due to complexity and as funny as it seems the cat is essentially buddhist...just able to let go and move on with life
This depends on the definition of "be me" and whether or not if you're a KAREN. Humans can't be themselves 100% with no astraint because we're social animals. You depend on farmers to feed you, shops to provide you goods. You are not independent so you should follow what society tells you. Unless if you are smart and able enough to carve out and shape your own life and society which most people can't.
@@handsomejustinit depends on definition of being independent. independence means you are independent so u are away of any intruders wanting break your life path. farmers are okay. I never met any but I buy a bread.
Wrong. Biased bullshit opinion. Worthless "sampling". Go get the opinions of the billions of homeless starving cats on this planet. Ask if THEY care about anything. Don't just ask comfortable house pets.
Good. I support and vote Socialist, Communist, Marxist, but I am a Green. I don't care what conservatives (Republicans) and centrists (Democrats) say I should be or for whom I should vote. I PROUDLY have voted and will vote for Dr Jill Stein (2024), Howie Hawkins (2020), Zoltan Istvan (2016), Cynthia McKinney (2012), Ralph Nader (2008, 2004, 2000, 1996). I am not responsible for anything bad because none of my candidates win.
I’ve had a few dogs in my life, and only one cat. That one cat had more impact on how I see the world, just from observing him. No matter what happened, or changed he was always content… then it clicked, if I just accept things as they are just like my cat. I will always have internal contentment.
But is acceptance part of human nature? It seems the video questions this. We cannot be like cats, but rather, we must be true to our own restless, searching nature.
But settling for mediocrity is no good. You aren't a regular animal and shouldn't settle for less, you should strive for where you want to be in life and what you want.
I don't like dogs...I had one dog when I was like 5yo and a woman dressed in a red suit stole my doggy from my childish hands 😂 I still remember that 20 years later, after that I only had cats.
a student once asked his teacher: "master, what is enlightenment?" the master replied: "when hungry, eat. when tired, sleep." he had learned well from his cat.
Yeah, you can live like cats as long as you can hunt in the jungle ALONE, without teamwork, and you don't need money to buy food, or shelter to cover your bed, and you happily accept death when you are too old or too ill to hunt.
I have a 13 year old cat and have lived with cats my whole life. When I announced my pregnancy with my daughter, I was asked several times, "What if Gertrude doesn't like the baby?" to which I always answered, "She'll make it known and go on with her life." She has and she did. We could all stand to be a little more like cats.
In my experience, cats (especially female cats) understand what a human baby is. They will protect the baby at all costs. It doesn't matter that we are different species. They are very intuitive animals.
I've seen a mom cat rush in and part a fight between her two sons, she heard the commotion and when she saw they were fighting, she ran in between them stood up and blocked the smaller one that was being bullied. When the bully backed down and walked away, she layed down next to the one that just got beat up to keep him safe from the other one. It was amazing to see. It was just like what a human would do when they see two people they know fighting
There has been times where my eldest cat would fight with the youngest one. Both are females. When this happens and it gets intense between them, my only boy Milo would break the fight between them. Sometimes he will gently push away the older one to make sure she doesn't attack the younger one and then goes to the younger one to check on her and keep her a little bit of company. Of course, they are play fight with each other but I noticed is when both of them are actually fighting.
i’m not sure if i’m the only one but this video made me feel better… i started to feel anxiety when i first got my kitten i was afraid the life i was giving to her wasn’t good enough ( which is probably just rooted in my trauma) but i was just overall having doubts if she was happy with me or not but slowly it started to go away, cats kinda just go day by day. everything intrigues cats!
I think animals also have egos but they are different then ours. Animals are teratorial and protective is a ego. Humans ego comes from material wealth and control, animal's have not need for that nonesense.
Animals can be greedy. If one gets too greedy, it sets off the balance, and risks death in nature. Take a drink at the lake too long, a predator may appear. A deer running across the road, can get hit by a car. A dog stealing another dog’s food can cause a fight. Stealing a bird’s eggs can cause a bird to peck the thief to death. A male praying mantis looking to mate get’s it’s head cut off due to lust (biological reproduction). Try to steal a spider’s food, get caught in the web. Steal honey from a beehive, get stung. You can call this survival, but due to overindulgence, overextending one’s self, stealing, and not thinking about consequence will lead to one’s demise. Of course this is not absolute. Some steal their wealth, scam their way to the top, ect. But the ego is what ultimately messes up our lives. We need it to survive, but it must be used as a tool, not as a crutch. You should be in the driver’s seat, not your ego.
A tip: Do not stare into a cats eye's with your eye's completely open the whole time. The cat feels threatened when you stare at them. When staring at a cat, blink youre eye's for every 3-5 seconds. By blinking towards a cat you basicly say: I trust you, you are no threat to me and I do not want to hurt or attack you. And when the cat blinks back, he/she trust you with the staring :) Really nice feeling if you notice that the cats blink back to you!
Unless it's a cat that already trusts you. Then they don't mind the staring. But if you try to gain trust from a cat that's scared of you, it's worth a try. It's like a smile in cat language
When I was a kid, I had two cats and then got a kitten from a cat shelter where I volunteered. He was a bottle baby, found on the side of the road next to his mom's dead body so he had a tragic start to life. But this cat snuggled SO HARD, he was the snuggliest little guy. And in retrospect, I think he knew his time was short so he fit all the love he had in that time. He was about a year and a half when one day we found him dead in his favorite spot on the window sill. Absolutely heartbreaking and utterly shocking, I really loved that little guy. Now, I also had two full grown cats and they weren't big fans of him since he played constantly (you know, kitten). But when we died we buried him in the backyard. That same afternoon I was walking in the backyard (which was very large, it was a horse farm) and I passed by the kitten's grave. My other adult cat was walking with me as he had been outside for hours at that point (indoor/outdoor cat). I noticed then that there was a dead mouse gently placed next to his grave. My adult cat would hunt and he had another spot across the property that he used as a trophy cabinet/graveyard for all the little animals he killed. So he made it a point to bring this mouse to the grave of this kitten. I couldn't believe it, this is like 15+ years ago and it still gives me chills. Cats are way smarter and have way more emotional depth than we give them credit for.
Love this video. My only quibble is with some cats need of human contact. I adopted a not abused, but very neglected adult cat. She spent her first week with me, hiding under my bed, coming out to eat, and to use the box. I am extremely patient, with cats, and let her figure out what was going on, but still talked to her and encouraged her to come check things out. I did have 2 cats already, who gave her space and she really was not very concerned with them. Long story short, she became the most wonderful animal companion I have ever had. I love all my animals, but because of her situation I really gave her nothing but positive attention, and she really became a very loving friend. So where I disagree with this video, is that she was extremely attached to me, unlike any animal before. It was not about a lack a confidence, because she ruled the home, was not afraid of anything inside or out, and she took no shit from anybody. Of course she wanted treats and love like any animal, but she constantly would seek me out, just to be there. Of course, her sleeping curled next to my chest every night was for warmth, and security, but it was only me that she sought out just to hang and watch tv. Again, she was not shy or timid. I have taken in 2 strays over time, and while they held power over my existing 2 cats, she would have none of it. I now understand when I hear people talk about a cat that was more than just a dependent, looking for pets, and food. She was "around" 7 or 8 when I got her, and her life ran it's course until last year, when she started getting disoriented and refused to use the litter box, and I had to put her down. I am a 50 year old man, who lost my father when I was 30, mother at 40, and one brother soon after. Losing my wonderful friend was the hardest thing I have had to go thru, and over a year later, can still not even look at the hundreds of pics and videos I have of her. There are always exceptions to every rule, even when it comes to biology, and instinct. She was an exception.
Never clicked sooner for any of your notification! Watching this with my 7 meow babies beside me. During all the horrible times in my life, when I have pondered over existential questions and have gone through deep hurt, my babies have been the only thing constant. Just observing them gives such zen vibes. All my favorite people from all walks of life, all through history, have had cats as their companions. Thank you for this video. Special shout out to my fur babies- Chinu, Immy, Rudra, Dheer, kancha, Krishna and Lakhsmi.
Whoever created this video has never had a cat family. My cats are loving. I have a Mother cat, two of her male kittens and one female. This was a multi-generational family, with the step sister being one year older. There IS a very specific family structure, social support between the cats, and sibling rivalry and territorial issues. The one common truth is ALL of the cats love and respect to me. Cats do love, get angry, and hold grudges.
I did not know much about cats until one adopted me lol. Yes she chose me. And I have to say she is my best friend right now. My cat is very considerate of my feelings she is nothing like what most ppl describe about cats. I really resonate with her. We get each other. When I need time to myself she gives me space and I do the same with her.
All the people who say cats are awful, indifferent creatures who don't care about anyone have never spent any time with a cat. Those are the people who don't know anything about cats
This was fascinating! As a person who has lived with cats for most of my life, all the points here are true. In fact, my newest cat used to belong to the neighbor but he moved in with me four years ago. Cats truly live in the moment and don't have regrets.
I have a similar situation: during the first quarantine, I befriended the neighbors' cat, and today he always hops in the house for a visit with hugs, purrs and good food that I save for him. Such a special friendship
The answer is simple: cats know their self worth and if you treat them better than their owners, they will leave them. Cats have never forgotten they descend from the Egyptian goddess Bastet.
Interesting analogy! If we replace "indifference" with "equanimity, we have the state of mind that meditation aims at, which is peaceful and sublime. One could even call it supreme happiness
Am I the only one who geniuinely enjoys everytime there's a clip showing cats in the video? hahaha like man, these furballs are just simply my happiness.
Only last night I texted my granddaughter to inform her ( a cat whisperer) I'm off to buy a cat from the shelter this weekend. I realised I needed company to become present to my moments to stop cogitating on the sadness in the world. This talk just validated my need to get out of my own head. Thank you Sir.
I think there is one flaw in this book though. He does say not to try to be cats, but then gives us cat like rules which contradicts how he says cats behave and how he said not to try to be a cat. We can't be cats. Not merely because we're human but because that desire to change things is important. Eventually we must settle into a society or maybe a totally different way of life in which we too can be at peace. Other animals have been living and evolving much longer than we have. We too, have to seek a life style that brings us peace. That's why we ruminate, and we change things, and we fight. I don't think misery is our nature, I think it's because we keep building societies that make us miserable. Isn't it funny how all of our systems eventually get corrupted to the point where they only enrich a handful of people at the cost of everyone else? Solving that is our first step to a society where everyone actually gets a fair shake.
I really appreciate what cats bring to the table in some specific philosophical discussions, specifically in how self-centred humans are, to the point where an animal that does not feel the need to serve humans is considered unloyal and untrustworthy. The hubris of that human-centric point of view borders on the despicable. We value a creature who wants to be enslaved by its connection to humanity, whom we think should feel worthy based on how useful it is _to humans_ rather than a creature that lives independently of us. We are so digustingly proud and conceited that any creature that sees us as just another living being sharing the same world, as a creature who refuses to see us as masters or owners, is even vilified and attacked for it. Even regarding dogs I reject the word "owner", it's awful. We're, at most, guardians, tutors, and above all, friends. Dogs are wonderful, but I often wonder if we didn't purposefully breed them to become addicted to human approval and so we could benefit from that connection. Cats, on the other hand, recognise our existence and will respect us only when they're respected back - like pretty much all wild animals. I'm very, very glad we didn't manage to take that away from them. And concerning cats not really showing affection to us humans, that's the furthest thing from reality.
Thats kinda y I have no interest in teaching any dog tricks. I just wanna appreciate what a pet can naturally do, perhaps even just enjoy the fact they're company.
My Cats I know. I know. they are limited, have different needs and concerns. but I watch and learn from them. I like the little they know, which is so much. they complain but never worry, they walk with a surprising dignity. they sleep with a direct simplicity that humans just can't understand. their eyes are more beautiful than our eyes. and they can sleep 20 hours a day without hesitation or remorse. when I am feeling low all I have to do is watch my cats and my courage returns. I study these creatures. they are my teachers. Charles Bukowski
I found this philosophy very appealing tough.... the message I got from this is; enjoy the company of others, don't take yourself too seriously, be content, be independent. Don't cling too much or entangle yourself to others. Be independent and loving at the same time. Love and affection should be liberating.not a burden. Not because you feel the need to 'prove yourself' or because you 'owe it to someone'. This is my favourite philosophy do far. 😽
Cats are pretty wise and are excellent observers of all that's going on around them. Wonder... if they could speak in human language, then what all would they convey about! 🤔😺
My father always told me : A stupid person wants to learn from few people, an intelligent person is going to kearn from donkeys too. Leave alone cats, they are pretty smart compared to donkeys ;)
I love my kitty. She's a bundle of joy and shaped me into a better man. I found Whisky outside as a runt of the litter and dying. We restored her to health at 3 weeks and have been inseparable. She is by my side all the time almost 4 Yeats later.
"Most of cats are stoics. They're perfectly fine with themselves and their place in the universe - and they stay at that place. Only when they want to eat or to satisfy some other need - they do exactly what's necessary to quickly get back to the equilibrium state, and then they're fine again." ~ Joscha Bach
Big cat daddy here. Or at least I was, till my Snookie died in 2020. She was 19 or 20. Feral when I met her, she took some time to decide I was ok and adopted me. We had various interesting adventures for about 8 years
I am not a cat person but I am starting to love them. I know that our family's cat named Catriona truly loves me. I can feel her genuine love most especially when I am feeling down..🙂
And to make ourselves feel better, we sort of "shame" cats for being our masters, trying to impose human morals in order to justify our action of caring for them at the detrimental of our own resources ie. time, energy, money when essentially, we have zero obligations to take care of them. Damn, I love cats! They are such an inspiration for us.
I have learned more from my childhood cats, as an undiagnosed autistic child, than my own parents. Dont get me wrong, they are great parents all things considered, but never a good model for happiness and serenity, or philosophy. And 'Model' here is the key word. They lived what they preached. Lead by example. One great lesson right there. Observing cats i started to simply enjoy life as it is in the moment, enjoy the sun on my skin, playing with seemingly uninteresting things, care little of the enticements of others, and most of all: Boundaries. When my parents always wanted to push my boundaries like preventing me from closing my own damn door, or getting all up in my business, from cats i learned to have set boundaries and protect them with teeth and claws, firmly but not with needless anger, and yet to have a door always open for the cats as they always bring good things with them (cuddles), and are innocent. And as an adult i learned that they dont piss/shit around to spite us monkeys, like my mom used to believe for so long, but to tell us something is wrong, its a cry for help: Ignorance/desperation before malice. Another Great lesson just right there. And to repay the many lessons my cats taught me, and even if they dont really need it, i am teaching them to speak, so that they might be more precise in their demands. Im doing such with recordable buttons (ironically, the buttons were invented for autistic children, i guess everything is connected isnt it), and they already know 'food', and one of them 'pets' too.
My cat LOVES me sooo sooo much. When I come home she puuuurrs and puuurrs and waits for me to lie down so that she can come to love me... And in the morning, she comes and offers love just like a loving little child... And when I brought home another cat to visit, he was so kind and loving... So selfless... he would let the other cat eat his food and he was so caring and attentive towards them.... Oh, I am going to go give my Jericho a hug cuz I realized how amazing and DIVINE he is...:D
The beautiful part of this video is how it practically demonstrates some of its core points about humans' innate drive to create stories (the video characterizes cats as human characters or archetypes -- things we can properly grasp, though we probably can't), and drive to become things we are not (cats).
As a cat person from an early age and who learned from observation. I definitely ended up learning the way of the cat. By simply going and doing what needs to be done to live an entertaining life granted a good handful of my luck goes into comedic timing. By just doing what needs to be done to be entertained is enough for me since I already grew up as an only child not getting too attached to anyone, even with my parents either leaving entirely or coming back home from work super late and other stuff. Ohhh fun times just goofin around with the mystical spirits.
I have loved cats since I was a kid. I have also written a poem about a cat I used to feed as a student in JNU, New Delhi, titled " A Stray Cat in Godavari Hostel". Its publ in my 2 poetry collections: The Golden Chord and The Prism of Life.
There's neither philosophy nor anti-philosophy.. there's only the ultimate reality which is indescribable to us lay people! We exist in this conventional world and the ultimate domain is right there we aren't realising.. it's like both coexist here only like two sides of the same coin! Everything exists conventionally. Ultimately, nothing exists as we think now! It's all like a chasing a rainbow 🌈 we're all childish running after illusory rainbows!
Cats are not reliving past traumas or victories. They are not absorbed by worries or hopes for tomorrow. Rather they engage fully in this moment. True mindfulness.
I feel like we could also learn something from them other than this, like the way we behave around cats. Controlling your emotions also because of their behaviors.
I had a different relationship with my cats than the one outlined here. My female cat loved me and wanted my attention. She was so happy when I petted her and paid attention to her. Now that she is gone I feel bad that I didn't give her more attention than I did. She was frightened when as an older cat she got oral cancer and she looked to me to make everything okay, but I couldn't. My male cat was very self-centered. He felt the world revolved around him and everything was created for him. He was king of the cats in the neighborhood. He chased the other cats around. He taught me that it was important for him to lay a scent trail to mark his kingdom; he taught me why he brought his prey into the house (so other cats could not swipe it); he was an excellent hunter and caught birds all the time. He knew how to sneak up on them. He also enjoyed chasing squirrels, just for fun. He was always one bite away and could never catch them. And he knew how to get what he wanted from me; he had me trained. He was the most persistent cat I've ever met. My neighbor used to say, " I know he's just a cat, but he is so annoying." Also, he was a fussy, fussy eater. He was ill for several years before he died and ate non-stop the most expensive cat food I could find. His thyroid was over-active. Both my cats were thin and experienced pain before they died. Both refused medication. My male cat bit me so hard when I tried to give him a pill, the wound got badly infected. Both cats would run when I tried to hide medication behind my back. They knew what I was up to. When I left them alone for three days to go to a funeral, they wanted nothing to do with me for 24 hours after I came back. They thought I had abandoned them. I think my male cat knew what I was doing when I called to put him down because he was suffering too much. He clearly gave up on the ride to the vet. My point is that cats have such distinct personalities and complex motivations, it is impossible to talk about cats in general. I just saw My Octopus Teacher, and I realize I learned from my cats the same way he did from the octopus. But I did not learn what John Gray learned from them.
“God, spare me from the desire for love, approval, and appreciation. Amen.” ~Byron Katie. For some reason, the way it's worded, this quote made me finally get it.
There was a stray cat that come to my house and beg for food, but I didn't give my food, and i can see the sadness in his eyes, cat does have feeling and emotion, but the nature of cat behavior that was given by their ancestors trap them into thinking that survival is the most important, I've met my friend's cat that has been missing for months and when it was found, the cat was missing the owner so much it cuddles and even shed tears, the theory that cat only care for themselves is wrong because not all cat are the same.
Great video! However, I’d like to point out that the idea of ’cats don’t need their ownes” is not true, in fact a lot of cats are left and die every year because people believe this. It’s true that cats are more independent and more likely to be able to fend for themselves than a dog for example. But they are still domesticerad animals, and their chance of survival is a lot slimmer by themselves in the wilderness than with a owner. So please don’t abandon your cats.
& please don’t let them out ! They are responsible for billions of birds and smaller animals being killed. I’ve had cats all indoor cats and they are just as happy and a lot safer than people that let their cats outside.
The claim that they _need_ to consume meat is also not true. It’s true that they’re incapable of agreeing with an ethical stance on this issue, just like human toddlers, but it’s simply not true that they physically can’t survive without consuming meat. Meat contains no magical nutrients that can’t be obtained from other sources, you just have to ensure that they still get all the nutrients that they need.
My cat went missing for 5 days about 2 weeks ago, and since he has been home he has been so affectionate. even before he was always following me around the house and he is very active. ive never had a cat that cared so much
That’s exactly how I live my life by “cat default” while most ppl are dying to be praised and get approval while everyone is fighting in public and schools meetings as whether to wear a mask or get vaccinated etc I don’t give one shit either way nothing has affected me since the pandemic or the bad economy, nothing but nothingness I live my life being very indifferent or maybe I just lack empathy And my Maine Coon cat agree
You are going inside a paradox, you claim to not care about how others judge you but you claim in this comment section to not care therefore actually caring what others look at you by commenting.
Here's the rest of the Ten Life Tips from Cats for those who were looking for it (from Feline Philosophy: Cats and the Meaning of Life): 1. Never try to persuade human beings to be reasonable Trying to persuade human beings to be rational is like trying to teach cats to be vegans. Human beings use reason to bolster whatever they want to believe, seldom to find out if what they believe is true. This may be unfortunate, but there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it. If human unreason frustrates or endangers you, walk away. 2. It is foolish to complain that you do not have enough time If you think you do not have enough time, you do not know how to pass your time. Do what serves a purpose of yours and what you enjoy doing for its own sake. Live like this, and you will have plenty of time. 3. Do not look for meaning in your suffering If you are unhappy, you may seek comfort in your misery, but you risk making it the meaning of your life. Do not become attached to your suffering, and avoid those who do. 4. It is better to be indifferent to others than to feel you have to love them Few ideals have been more harmful than that of universal love. Better cultivate indifference, which may turn into kindness. 5. Forget about pursuing happiness, and you may find it You will not find happiness by chasing after it, since you do not know what will make you happy. Instead, do what you find most interesting and you will be happy knowing nothing of happiness. 6. Life is not a story If you think of your life as a story, you will be tempted to write it to the end. But you do not know how your life will end, or what will happen before it does. It would be better to throw the script away. The unwritten life is more worth living than any story you can invent. 7. Do not fear the dark, for much that is precious is found in the night You have been taught to think before you act, and often that may be good advice. Acting on how you feel at the moment may be no more than obeying worn-out philosophies you have accepted without thinking. But sometimes it is better to follow an inkling that glimmers in the shadows. You never know where it may lead you. 8. Sleep for the joy of sleeping Sleeping so that you can work harder when you wake up is a miserable way to live. Sleep for pleasure, not profit. 9. Beware anyone who offers to make you happy Those who offer to make you happy do so in order that they themselves may be less unhappy. Your suffering is necessary to them, since without it they would have less reason for living. Mistrust people who say they live for others. 10. If you cannot learn to live a little more like a cat, return without regret to the human world of diversion Living like a cat means wanting nothing beyond the life you lead. This means living without consolations, and that might be too much for you to bear. If so, take up an old-fashioned religion, preferably one that abounds in rituals. If you cannot find a faith that suits you, lose yourself in common life. The excitement and disappointments of romantic love, the pursuit of money and ambition, the charades of politics and the clamour of the news will soon banish any sense of emptiness.
Me watching this: cats are just so cool and smart, so elegant. 100%living in the moment My cat: literally sitting at his food bowl yowling because I gave him crunchies instead of wet food
I just lost my cat this morning, he was terminally ill with cancer of the bladder, then I stumbled upon this video and the first cat they show is a tobby cat just like my cat, what are the odds?!...made me happy and sad at the same time
Perhaps it's on purpose, cats tend to hide away when they're about to die, that's why we very rarely see their corpses. My sister's kitten got infections on her eyes, she ran away behind the backyard's trashcan, we didn't find her until a week later. It was also right before we were about to bring her to the vet 🥲
We had a savage ass cat that apparently had child hood trauma (from a human) and was extremely moody and sometimes very aggresive, also towards humans without a reasonable explanation. It bit and hit people with the claws even when they tried feeding it. Sometimes it attacked me from behind with the claws so harsh that you would start bleeding lmao. once it attacked a pit bull on the other side of the street and scratched its nose bleedy and the pit bull was wheeping afterwards 😆 long story short, I think all animals are very individual and our cat was definitely as far away from being a zen cat as possible. I still liked her and What you could learn from it was that attacking sometimes is a good defense 😇
Yeah this always struck me, one time I laid down with my cat and I was like “this world is such a terrible place, and yet, our cats live in these houses being happy, nothing outside affects them, they just live a happy simple life, what if we tried to live similarly to them?” I always wondered about that question.. Are pets living way better than we do? What if we also stopped caring? He just plays and relaxes all day, he just focuses what is going on in front of him, what if we only focused our problems rather than the world?
This was an incredibly insightful post. Thank you. One would also say that all this could be a projection of our human perspective on cats since none of us are actually in the cats’ minds to know how they actually perceive life. All in all, the basis of a wonderful conversation and beautiful takeaways on life.
To the *incredible person* that's seeing this, I wish you all the best in life❤ don't over blame yourself, accept things and go forward. Don't let others define what “success” is for you. Get up, learn the skills needed and get after it, all the keys to a happy life is in your hands. Keep pushing.
I love the western perspective on cat behavior and philosophical archetypes! This is a great explanation. I can't help but think of a book I read in my Japanese history class in college called "I Am A Cat" by Natsume Soseki. It's an interesting satire on Japanese poltical, social and societal from the perspective of a cat narrator. Many of the concepts about happiness, storytelling, and connections to humanity are explored in this novel. I highly recommend the book!
You don't own the cat, the cat is owned by no one. They are not property, they are another individual who happens to live with you. If you get companionship from a cat, that's rare and says something positive about you.
I don't have much experience with cats, but from what I've learned for the last 3 years of having cats around, is that they are able to feel gratitude, which they express to repay us our kindness and care for them. For example, one cat always after eating gave me a funny joyful performance, which she perfectly knew would make me laugh! Actually, she remembered all the little things i enjoyed her doing, and would perform them often spontaneously just to make me happy. I feel she did it out of gratitude ❤ I'm still devastated by her untimely death from the hands of an Indian butcher-vet, who messed up with her sterilisation 😢 Also in my experience, cats can be wonderful psychotherapists! Just with their presence, their being in the moment, relaxed and carefree! What a great teaching and a reminder on how to be satisfied and contented each precious moment of our lives! No philosophical rubbish, just being. I'm still learning a lot from these highly intelligent and highly sensitive creatures and am immensely grateful to them!
One of my cats is a joker too, loves it when you think he's funny, so he gets even funnier. His brother, not so much. He's really funny too, but I have to hide my chuckles & keep quiet because he gets all embarrassed & stops. An "Indian doctor" saved the life of one of mine at six months old (colon surgery). He's two now and thriving, I can't even find the scar on his belly. Doc did a great job and I'll be forever grateful.
Love this video. I've always felt a deep resonance with cats and embody aspects of them. Like I use to be a cat in a previous life. Thanks for this video.
Every Co-Dependent, Empath or victim of narcissistic abuse needs to watch this: Because it is often their blind adherence to learned morals of what's _right_ that is largely driving their choices to stay in exposure to toxic drama's, defending them selves from all manner of irrational gaslighting and behavioural incongruities throw at them while their perpetrators smirk in joy of the upsets. All the while, [just like in the cats nature] the solution lies in the clear 'unhumanised' ground out beyond 'good and bad/ right and wrong' - just walk away from things that are no longer genuinely fun, interesting or beneficial ✨☮️🎄
It all comes down to our work obsession. We tell ourselves and our children to not give up, when sometimes that's the only rational decision. We work ourselves to the bone and fret about everything. It's a three-ring circus, and we are the stars of the show, unaware of where we are.
@@pythonxz this is why I'm practicing non-action, do something with the least amount of force, and you can apply this to interpersonal relationships as well, that way the drama and emotions reduce because you no longer resist it with force and you just let things pass.
Love your video❤I’ve also learned a lot from my cat Jiangjun. She taught me to move my attention from tense work and complicated relationships to nature environment.
“Having a bunch of cats around is good. If you're feeling bad, just look at the cats, you'll feel better, because they know that everything is, just as it is.”
- Charles Bukowski, On Cats -
Awesome quote, though it only applies to cats who’s needs are met including love.

Said the old cat, “My son, I, too, have paid attention to the problems of the universe. cats out here single-handedly running philosophy
Well this is profound !
Powerful story
Yes. Cats are supreme masters of zero stress, apathy in a healthy way, and relaxation that even a Taoist monk can only dream to be like.
Dogs taught me the meaning of unconditional love however, cats taught me what self worth is all about.
GOLD. The gift of having both.

A cat does not worry about what they could have done differently in the past or worry about what they need to do in the future.
Instead they live IN THE MOMENT. Which is why they are so 'present' and free of anxiety and love life so much. We can all learn from cats
I would think just like other animals. Cats as well as all other animals live in regret.
They are simple animal unlike us human who dealt with myriad of problems in amidst of capitalism.
I have met some very anxious cats and even kind of psycotic ones, however more the exception than the rule ... I wonder if is because of too much interaction with humans? 🤔
this is profound
They don't worry about it because they learn from the past and don't repeat stupid stuff in the future. I do not think every cat is free of anxiety. I have seen some horrible situations, and those cats are anything but free of anxiety.
It is easy to bond with a cat but the onus is on you to facilitate that bond, you must be the first one to say "I love you" and ask him/her nicely to love you back.
Note to self: "If they like to be with us, they stay. Otherwise, they leave"
Yes 👏👏👏👏
I've been around cats for 7 years and some of them cared about their friends when they died, they grieved to a point of not eating.
Some died of pain.
While I think that situation is pretty rare in cats, the cat philosophy is more of a "don't sweat the small things" vibe. A good way to get out of your own head and live a more content and stoic life. I don't think the point of the video was to feel nothing if your best friend or relative dies.

Humans can't be themselves 100% with no astraint because we're social animals. You depend on farmers to feed you, shops to provide you goods. You are not independent so you should follow what society tells you.

Of course, they are play fight with each other but I noticed is when both of them are actually fighting.
i’m not sure if i’m the only one but this video made me feel better… i started to feel anxiety when i first got my kitten i was afraid the life i was giving to her wasn’t good enough ( which is probably just rooted in my trauma) but i was just overall having doubts if she was happy with me or not but slowly it started to go away, cats kinda just go day by day. everything intrigues cats!
in a nutshell - cats and all animals win because they don't have to struggle with their ego
Exactly
Some does, but in the cat case it’s right.
@@shadoshahad1546 some? no, all others except humans
And when the cat blinks back, he/she trust you with the staring :)
Really nice feeling if you notice that the cats blink back to you!
Cats gives supreme massages when you're laying on your stomach. But the cat needs to feel confident and safe around you.
That's not how that works
It is like saying I love you back
I seem to remember discovering this myself.
Unless it's a cat that already trusts you. Then they don't mind the staring. But if you try to gain trust from a cat that's scared of you, it's worth a try. It's like a smile in cat language
Man, this guy, Cat, seems like the chillest, best philosopher to have existed.
So sad to read, but astonishing. Thank you ❤ and thank you for being so kind helping kittens in shelters
She's loved you a lot. Beautiful story!
💔 I'm sorry about your friend. I know how it feels like to lose one😢

I came for the philosophy, my cat came for the cats
Oh God, the betrayal! 😂
Did you lure it away by giving it food?
I have a similar situation: during the first quarantine, I befriended the neighbors' cat, and today he always hops in the house for a visit with hugs, purrs and good food that I save for him. Such a special friendship
I think it is not just about food (lol), but also on the fact that the cat may feel more content in a certain environment and with certain people
The answer is simple: cats know their self worth and if you treat them better than their owners, they will leave them.
Cats have never forgotten they descend from the Egyptian goddess Bastet.
Interesting analogy! If we replace "indifference" with "equanimity, we have the state of mind that meditation aims at, which is peaceful and sublime. One could even call it supreme happiness

👏
Couldn’t agree more 👍
Yes, 100% on point.
superb, well said!
Thats kinda y I have no interest in teaching any dog tricks. I just wanna appreciate what a pet can naturally do, perhaps even just enjoy the fact they're company.

Sometimes I think that cats possess unfathomable wisdom, when they stare deep into your eyes.

I'm going to start applying the; "where I fits, I sits" philosophy from now on.

Cats are given everything they need to survive and more, humans are not.
Here's the rest of the Ten Life Tips from Cats for those who were looking for it (from Feline Philosophy: Cats and the Meaning of Life):
1. Never try to persuade human beings to be reasonable
Trying to persuade human beings to be rational is like trying to teach cats to be vegans. Human beings use reason to bolster whatever they want to believe, seldom to find out if what they believe is true. This may be unfortunate, but there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it. If human unreason frustrates or endangers you, walk away.
2. It is foolish to complain that you do not have enough time
If you think you do not have enough time, you do not know how to pass your time. Do what serves a purpose of yours and what you enjoy doing for its own sake. Live like this, and you will have plenty of time.
3. Do not look for meaning in your suffering
If you are unhappy, you may seek comfort in your misery, but you risk making it the meaning of your life. Do not become attached to your suffering, and avoid those who do.
4. It is better to be indifferent to others than to feel you have to love them
Few ideals have been more harmful than that of universal love. Better cultivate indifference, which may turn into kindness.
5. Forget about pursuing happiness, and you may find it
You will not find happiness by chasing after it, since you do not know what will make you happy. Instead, do what you find most interesting and you will be happy knowing nothing of happiness.
6. Life is not a story
If you think of your life as a story, you will be tempted to write it to the end. But you do not know how your life will end, or what will happen before it does. It would be better to throw the script away. The unwritten life is more worth living than any story you can invent.
7. Do not fear the dark, for much that is precious is found in the night
You have been taught to think before you act, and often that may be good advice. Acting on how you feel at the moment may be no more than obeying worn-out philosophies you have accepted without thinking. But sometimes it is better to follow an inkling that glimmers in the shadows. You never know where it may lead you.
8. Sleep for the joy of sleeping
Sleeping so that you can work harder when you wake up is a miserable way to live. Sleep for pleasure, not profit.
9. Beware anyone who offers to make you happy
Those who offer to make you happy do so in order that they themselves may be less unhappy. Your suffering is necessary to them, since without it they would have less reason for living. Mistrust people who say they live for others.
10. If you cannot learn to live a little more like a cat, return without regret to the human world of diversion
Living like a cat means wanting nothing beyond the life you lead.

Wet food I gave as a treat. I bought high nutritious crunchies all the time.
My cats hate dry cat food, they only want wet cat food

I just lost my cat this morning, he was terminally ill with cancer of the bladder, then I stumbled upon this video and the first cat they show is a tobby cat just like my cat, what are the odds?!...made me happy and sad at the same time
>3 internet hug from a fellow cat lover who lost her cat a couple months ago. it's tough but you will get through it.
I still liked her and What you could learn from it was that attacking sometimes is a good defense 😇
very very insightful. Thank you for this! Worth watching!
I've had cats since I was nine years old. They're really great. I relate to this video so much!
Watching my cats nature makes me want to meditate. When they are relaxed they are very calm, natural, and Serene.
This was an incredibly insightful post. Thank you. One would also say that all this could be a projection of our human perspective on cats since none of us are actually in the cats’ minds to know how they actually perceive life. All in all, the basis of a wonderful conversation and beautiful takeaways on life.
😂
This is very philosophical and it shows the difference of species and how they’re so different mentally
As a cat, I can confirm this is entirely true.
meow !!! 🙂
I see cats seated upright just kinda meditating sometimes and I honestly get jealous. They’re so peaceful sometimes.

To the *incredible person* that's seeing this, I wish you all the best in life❤ don't over blame yourself, accept things and go forward. Don't let others define what “success” is for you. Get up, learn the skills needed and get after it, all the keys to a happy life is in your hands. Keep pushing.
I like this but I liked the video way more.
Well said ❤️
Thank you ☺️
Thank you you too great comment I love it!
Cat philosophy 😻 that's what I need in my life! 😸
The algorithm nailed it again. New subscriber here 😹
I love the western perspective on cat behavior and philosophical archetypes!
I personally find happiness by following my feelings and do what I feel like doing. Cats seem to do the same thing.
Perfectly said! 🙏
too bad you need resources and to conform to societal standards as well.
They actually have hearts and deserve to be loved just like everybody else believe it or not
Tip nr 6: Dont think that you own a cat, the cat always owns you.
Ok thank you, Capitan obvious. It's so clear how they own the world.
@@MP-ut6eb u need English grammar class asap
You don't own the cat, the cat is owned by no one. They are not property, they are another individual who happens to live with you. If you get companionship from a cat, that's rare and says something positive about you.
It should be more or less mutual respect rather than any ownership issue. If you treat them right they will stay.
@@pythonxz If it weren't for me, she'd be dead. So yes, I do own the cat.
I believe cats to be spirits come to earth. A cat, I am sure, could walk on a cloud without coming through.
I feel she did it out of gratitude ❤
I'm still devastated by her untimely death from the hands of an Indian butcher-vet, who messed up with her sterilisation 😢
Also in my experience, cats can be wonderful psychotherapists!
This was the best, reading it I could feel the happiness and delight your cats bring you, it was beautiful.
I can't help it. I love cats. They're really cool creatures, especially majestic lions and tigers.
Wow this is crazy! I was literally scrolling through my instagram and came across a post about cats, then you posted this!
@@Dezzyyx True, that’s why we should never stress too much in this life because we’re never going to get out of it alive.
Agreed, I have 5 feral cats, after a life of narcs I'm healing!
in many cases that requires money.
but i see what you mean.
Your video (and my cat) saved me today. I think I can go forward. Thanks.
Love your video❤I’ve also learned a lot from my cat Jiangjun. She taught me to move my attention from tense work and complicated relationships to nature environment.
