When I was a tool die apprentice I worked at a shop next door to the Giddings and Lewis shop in Madison. I made many temples for the grinders and lathes at G&L. I use a brand new Bridgeport with a cup grinding wheel to finish size the template. They had to be "dead nuts" One time I missed the finial finish kick out. The guy I worked for never got mad but told me " I could have told you check that a thousand times but it would mean as much as what you did now" I never forgot that and when I was a Supervisor / Superintend at a shop with a large crew guys when a apprentice when slip up I told them the advice Bob told me. I am 74 and never forgot his words, I can see him standing there looking at me now in his white shirt looking at a 20 year old kid . Thanks Bob.
Thank you Keith, every video is a lesson, but a enjoyable one, we went the mechanics/race car building route in life, but like they say, "never stop learning"!, we had a local machine shop and all the equipment was pre WWII, it was re engineered by him, one of many of these modifications was a very old lathe, originally a flat belt driven machine, he converted it with a old truck transmission to have many different speeds plus reverse speeds, we tried to get a apprenticeships with the fellow out of High School, but he'd had former apprentice that had hurt his business by using old parts on new engines and said he'd never take on another one, which was very sad. The knowledge this man had would fill a library, as far as we know, he had no formal education for machining but he could sit down and draw out a design on paper of a racing intake in his vehicle and to our knowledge we have the only prototype of it on our race car, if we had a 1/10th of the knowledge that man had, we'd be set in life as a machinist!! Unfortunately he passed away years ago 😔 but he did leave a mark in our mind to do it right and simple as possible, Keith you remind us of him and that's one of a million reasons we watch everyone of your videos 📹 we can!! Your a A#1 Fellow. Please keep teaching us whatever you can!
Brought back 1964 memories, I did the injection mold tooling for the Valiant taillights using a hydraulic attachment on a Bridgeport. We also had an aftermarket hydraulic tool post attachment for our Monarch lathe, never used the 30° angle tip, simple bump and shim the template for X and Y adjustments. Happy New Year, enjoy the bikes!
Happy new year Keith it's good to have you back in action. That tracer attachment looks to be a very versatile and valuable tool in the arsenal. Enjoy your trip and If ya feel like sharing we'll be watching. Thanks
Thanks for keeping us older guys relevant. The tracer attachment is still a productive piece of equipment when used by a skilled hand. Thanks have a happy new year celebration stay safe
When you get to the Williamsburg area, be sure to check out the site of the original fort at Jamestown where they have been excavating for the last 25 odd years. There is a very good museum and they have some very good interpreters talking about the time and events.
Setup time always takes longer than the actual time to turn the profile. I have a duplicator on my wood lathe which comes in real handy. Enjoyed the video Keith.
Have a great new year sir. Thank you for capturing these techniques on all the heirloom quality machines and tooling. The new eclectic generation of budding machinists will really appreciate you sharing your know how, now and in the future. Myself included. Getter Done.
It’s always a pleasure to watch you work Keith! Your forward thinking and wealth of knowledge never ceases to amaze me. Makes me wish I had become a machinist in my younger days…especially if I had the chance to learn from someone like you! Wishing you all the best in 2022!
Keith, thanks so much for all the recent videos, I enjoy and learn from every one. Also congrats on finding someone to share your life and interests, you deserve it, you've earned it. Happy New Year, and may the next year treat you well!
Very informative and well presented video. Because I am just a hobbiest and don't have your professional lathe with all the bells and whistles, I would probably just use my belt sander to get a radius which would be 'close enough'. i. e. the radius just has to be close since it is not rubbing on another machined surface Be safe and hope you have a great February vacation👍👍👍👍
Happy New Year Keith! I'm glad to hear you're taking some time to get away and travel. I live about an hour away from Florida Flywheelers, just went there for the first time back in November. The friend I went with said the attendance was way down from previous events, but it was still a good day. Maybe I'll see you there in February.
Thanks for your videos and hopefully a great 2022. Looks like the shop is getting settled in and most everything is placed as you wanted. Have a wonderful new year that is stress free. Stay healthy and safe. George from Indiana
Great video Kieth, thank you. I have a tracer for my lathe i havent used yet. Not much out there for tracers, i sure do appreciate your videos on this!
Happy New Year! Have a wonderful time. You'll be tempted to move to Florida once you see how normal and sane that state is compared to most of the country. :-)
Good to see you shop fully back up and better than ever. Good to see you up and better than ever. Stay strong. Looking forward to watch you in 2022. happy new year
Dear Keith , wishing you a wonderful upcoming New Year, thank you for all the wonderful video you produce and let us watch, they are very helpful and appreciated, wishing you and your family all the best in the coming year......Cheers from Orlando, Florida, Paul
I hope you have a great time and safe celebration. .....OH , indecently the end of that rudder pivot shaft reminds me of an Award the guys in our Cylinder Plant had welded to a base when one of the guys got promoted from welding to a manager/supervisor position. Engraved on the base it read "Deep Throat Award". it was funny back then.
@@charlesangell_bulmtl Back then the general observation was; Put a Blue Supervisor coat on a guy, = Instant "A"- hole. Unfortunate guys seemed to forget where they came from.
I love that tracing attachment and its always good to have you share how you use it. Happy New Year Keith. Hearing you will be in Williamsburg VA in February I hope our weather is kind to you (I live in Newport News, AKA 'Shipyard Virginia', just minutes east).
That little nub on the end is from the tool nose radius. If the pattern had a flat on the front, the cut could start past the centerline by the amount of the tool radius. I used to work in a shop that had the same set up. We would cut patterns on the CNC mill to use on that lathe.
Happy New Year and enjoy your February trip. I assume you mean Williamsburg, Va. Enjoy Williamsburg. I live in Richmond , VA so of course because I live close I never visit there ;-). Wish I could make it to Florida Flywheels to meet you and the several other TH-camrs I follow.
Great to see you're taking some time off Keith. Happy New Year to you as well, and thanks for making the videos! I still refer back to your older ones, like the 4-jaw chuck videos you made when you received that chuck a while back.

I hope you have a great time and safe celebration. .....OH , indecently the end of that rudder pivot shaft reminds me of an Award the guys in our Cylinder Plant had welded to a base when one of the guys got promoted from welding to a manager/supervisor position. Keep him honest though?

Great entertainment, as usual! And some useful tips along the way too! Thanks for sharing!
Happy New Year, Keith! 😃
Glad you're back Keith. Happy New Year pal.
Nice attachment. The last ball I did was with a pointer following a paint can and that takes some post-process sanding to make it look nice :o)
Great video Keith, keep'um coming.
