Thanks Keith, I got my first mill, a 1942 K&T 2HL PLAIN when I was in high school. It needed a LOT more work to get running but I only paid 6 cents a pound for it. Has been a great machine for over 40 years now...

Glad to see you got your head cleared up and everything. I wish I had the opportunity to buy a piece of equipment like that for my garage but I don't have three phase power and ANY machine within a day drive of my garage would have an extra 0 on the price and would be in far worse shape. It kinda makes me sick to see warehouses full of equipment just sitting there for years and years because they want $10,000 for a 50 year old piece of equipment they they picked up for scrap price a couple decades ago. But such is life.

  • @1pcfred

Keith knows how to talk to those old girls. Just tell them about the scrap yard across the street and they behave then.

Well bought. Glad to see a usable machine so low priced. I'm 46 and have ran a fence construction company my father founded in 1980 for the last 20 years. Due to a rare tick born infection called Tularemia, my physical strength and stamina was permanently impacted. Having watched Keith from almost the start of his channel, it helped me decide to move into another career and I am signed up to learn machine technology this fall. I hope that with my already advanced mechanical, electrical and welding skills that I can transition my business into a job shop where my brains are more important than my brawn.

I just recently picked up a 60's Clausing 14" lathe and tomorrow I'm going to pick up a mill. I've wanted a mill for some time but couldn't justify it until recently. The lathe was a project but the mill is going to be able to hit the floor running. Good machines are kind of hard to find at a decent price here in Florida.

My employer has a plant full of expensive CNC turning centers and vertical machining centers but we still have two of those same Kearny and Trecker mills that we use quite often. They are bullet proof and are often the best way to do certain operations. $700 was a steal!!

Glad to see you back. Nice Mill. If that was on the West Coast, covered in thick rust, motor barely able to turn, handles missing, oil full of gunk, it would still be selling for a couple of thousand. I am jealous.

I have a couple hundred cutters that I ended up with from an auction. Everything from thin cutters to ~6” spiral. Most still have plastic on them (I assume from having been sharpened). I believe all of them are American made HSS. I thought maybe someone watching this may have a need since they’re just taking up space in my garage currently.

You may already know this, but if you put a Shop-Vac hose on the oil inlet the vacuum will hold the oil in the case while you change the sight glass, etc. The only thing I don't use this trick on is with something that has flammable vapors like gasoline. It works great for patching holes in diesel tanks or radiators. I realize your oil was over full and you were intentionally letting some out, but I just thought I'd pass this trick on for others to use when needed.

Excellent fixing there!! I had a motorcycle with plastic sight lenses for the brake/clutch fluid, I ended up finding borosilicate lab glass lenses in the exact size, what a joy compared to old plastic and better than the new plastic ones. crystal clear and tough. Great to see another video from you Keith!!

I don't know, for $700 I'd probably buy that even if there was some things non-functional. I'd repair gears, replace shafts, recondition the motor, or even scrape the ways to get a deal like that.
(For comparison, I paid $500 for the lathe I'm restoring on my channel, and it's required a bit of work so far)

  • @PhilG999

From my time in the Industrial Equipment industry ( I did mechanical power transmission, hydraulics and pneumatics and pretty much everything else) we always tried to sell the customer matched v-belts or two ,three, four + "multi V belts". Like 4 "D" belts in one. Wasn't much more expensive and it was a "fix it once and you're done". So many just got random belts of the "same" size but not matched and bitched that they didn't run the same. Um. "That match number on the belt is there for a reason".

Keith I really like this machine. I don't believe I could store this till I freed up the pump. If not lubed it may turn into a rust ball. The x y and z motions seem really good. Sometimes machines of this vintage have trouble in the up direction on high speed but this is stellar.

The reason why it's cheap in price is your friend just cut you a deal or because it's just a plain old horizontal mill, now if it had a vertical head attachment that would put the mill in a different price range and versatility but I don't think that mill was designed for a vertical head.

A little wd-40 on your rag will clean off that stain on the fill lines. Even while the oil is flowing. Whenever we get a new machine at work (I am a mechanic at a large repair/cnc shop). I drain the oil completely, fill with ISO AW 46 and run through the gears for about an hour if the oil is not contaminated. It will help clean out gunk and gear dust from wear. If the oil is contaminated with water, I will use WD- 40 first for about 20 min due to it's hydrophobic properties.
