  • So you bought a new machine, I take you through the process to find out if My purchase of this K&T #2 Plain mill was worth the value I paid for it. I talk a little bit abought what to look for and should have done before your new purchase when buying used machinery.

Keith I really like this machine. I don't believe I could store this till I freed up the pump. If not lubed it may turn into a rust ball. The x y and z motions seem really good. Sometimes machines of this vintage have trouble in the up direction on high speed but this is stellar.

$700....That's $7,000 around me. Want it to work? That's an extra $4,000. Looked at a Jet Belt Drive Lathe, no chucks, no motor, half the handles missing, needed a total cleaning. Offered $600...I was laughed at. "$2500 minimum". Interwebs said this model was between $500 and $1500 in operating condition with chucks and tool holders. Nope, not in my area. Time to find a way to look outside the area...is what it is...

I wish I had the opportunity to buy a piece of equipment like that for my garage but I don't have three phase power and ANY machine within a day drive of my garage would have an extra 0 on the price and would be in far worse shape. It kinda makes me sick to see warehouses full of equipment just sitting there for years and years because they want $10,000 for a 50 year old piece of equipment they they picked up for scrap price a couple decades ago. But such is life.

From my time in the Industrial Equipment industry ( I did mechanical power transmission, hydraulics and pneumatics and pretty much everything else) we always tried to sell the customer matched v-belts or two ,three, four + "multi V belts". Like 4 "D" belts in one. Wasn't much more expensive and it was a "fix it once and you're done". So many just got random belts of the "same" size but not matched and bitched that they didn't run the same. Um. "That match number on the belt is there for a reason".

Due to a rare tick born infection called Tularemia, my physical strength and stamina was permanently impacted. Having watched Keith from almost the start of his channel, it helped me decide to move into another career and I am signed up to learn machine technology this fall. I hope that with my already advanced mechanical, electrical and welding skills that I can transition my business into a job shop where my brains are more important than my brawn.

The reason why it's cheap in price is your friend just cut you a deal or because it's just a plain old horizontal mill, now if it had a vertical head attachment that would put the mill in a different price range and versatility but I don't think that mill was designed for a vertical head.

You may already know this, but if you put a Shop-Vac hose on the oil inlet the vacuum will hold the oil in the case while you change the sight glass, etc. The only thing I don't use this trick on is with something that has flammable vapors like gasoline. It works great for patching holes in diesel tanks or radiators. I realize your oil was over full and you were intentionally letting some out, but I just thought I'd pass this trick on for others to use when needed.
