  • Welcome to Santiago, Chile in 2022! Exploring Santiago is a great way to start learning more about Chile and the people who live in it, so in this video we explore the city and eat tons of Chilean food!
We start our exploration of Santiago with a visit to Plaza de Armas before heading to Paseo Ahumada to check out the many shops that pop up along this busy pedestrian street. We also visit the Catedral de Santiago, Plaza de la Constitucion (Constitution Plaza) to see La Moneda Palace (the President's Palace), Mercado la Vega (La Vega Market), Santiago Mercado Central (Santiago's Central Market), and San Cristobal Hill.
In between these attractions we try as many foods as we can stomach in one day! We managed to get our hands on some delicious Chilean flan (we are pretty sure it was flan), crab empandadas, piscola, torta de mil hojas (cake of a thousand leaves), mote con huesillo, hamburguesa chilena from Antigua Fuente, and chorrillana. If you don't know what some of those foods are, enjoy watching us learn about them in this video as well!
We had a jam packed day exploring Chile's capital city, and we hope this video gives you some ideas of what to do and eat for your next visit to Santiago! If you are interested in seeing more videos from South America, hit subscribe to keep up with our adventures!

Wow we never knew that! That's so cool that he's from Chile. Yes Santiago was such an interesting city, especially with all the recent events happening. Our AirBnB was even nearby where the current president lives in Barrio Yungay, apparently that's not normal for the president to live in a neighborhood and so there was extra security around which was interesting to see. We really wish we had more time in Chile. It's such a big country with many cool travel destinations that we will have to come back one day. We're glad you and the whole fam enjoyed the video 😊

Regarding the frikandel. This restaurant and Santiago has lots of German influences. So the frikandel refers to the German Frikadelle (one word in Germany to say juicy minced meat patty, others could be Boulette, Fleischpflanzerl btw.). So the Kraut situation is correct. Frikandel means in other cuisines something a bit different like in Dutch. Take care.

Hey there! How exciting that you are going to Santiago! We actually would say that Santiago is the place in South America that we felt the greatest risk of having our things stolen. We had multiple locals come up to us during our time there and caution us about our cameras and bags and we definitely felt more watches in Santiago than other places. We don't mean to scare you, but to pass along the cautions that we're given to us. We never had any issues even with all our camera gear, but we felt we had to be very mindful of our things! We still had an awesome time (as you saw in the video) but had to be extra vigilant 🙂

That's great and we're certain you'll have an awesome time 😊 To enter Chile we actually crossed by land from Argentina down south near Punta Arenas. Our experience with the border crossing was very smooth. We just followed what we saw on the IATA website and it worked out well (fully vaccinated and had a pcr test ready). We have another video talking about international travel in case you're interested. Also we suggest joining the Chile travelers Facebook group (if you have FB). It's very active and there is lots of chatter about travel in Chile. I think it was called "Argentina Chile Travel Community". Very useful! Hope this helps 😁

Heading to the W Trek in January! My friends and I are debating whether or not we should rest in Puerto Natales for a couple days after the trek or head right to Santiago. How tired were you guys after the hike, would you recommend rest days before visiting Santiago? And how many days do you think would be good to spend in Santiago. Is 1 day okay? or should we try to hit 2 or 3?
Really appreciated this video and your packing video for the W/O Trek!

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hey there! If it were us doing the W and we were on a holiday to Chile, we would probably plan to leave for Santiago the day after finishing the trek and then book 3 nights in Santiago. That way you'll have 2 full days in Santiago and can mix in some resting during that time. If you've got more time to spare, then you could add on a day in Santiago for sure! Just a word of caution though, we found Santiago to be a little stressful to visit because theft was a real issue so you're always on edge. I know so many people will say this about lots of South American cities, but after visiting many of them, we can say it is actually true of Santiago. We had about 5 locals talk to us during our day of filming in Santiago and tell us to be very careful with our bags, phones, camera gear, etc. We never had an issue, but we did feel pretty on edge as a result.

Mote con huesillo is a traditional Chilean summer-time drink often sold in street stands or vendor carts. It is a non-alcoholic beverage consisting of a sweet clear nectar-like liquid made with dried peaches (huesillo) cooked in sugar, water and cinnamon, and then once cooled, mixed with fresh cooked husked wheat (mote).

    Hola.
    Hello.
It is very important to communicate to your subscribers, that they should NOT try or taste street food, typical Chilean food is not sold in the streets, the hygienic measures of those who sell it is very poor, recently it was detected that they were selling dog meat, a person he ate a "pet chip", perhaps the exception is consuming "Mote con Huesillos" (which is the only thing you can try in the different carts). The rest of the typical dishes are best tried in established places.

The flan was done wrongly (for Chile, probably the store was run by non-Chileans) in Chile the flan is silky and extremely smooth. The torta de mil hojas was also wrong, should be done with many layers of thin dough made with egg yolks and flower it is time consuming but that is the only proper way to make a torta de mil hojas.

CHILE THE BROTHELHOUSE OF LATIN AMERICA:
We were a country with 17 million inhabitants and, only in 2 and 1/2 governments (presidents: Bachelet, Piñera and Boric), they have filled us with "MASSIVE IMMIGRATION AND WITHOUT BORDER CONTROL". This makes us very sad and hopeless as Chileans, since more than 2 million (Latin American) immigrants have arrived in less than a decade, radically changing our culture and customs of our traditions. It has been a cultural shock since a lot of crime has arrived (hitmen, murders, kidnappings, robberies, street food sales, a lot of noise, etc.).
Massive migrations are promoted by the UN and the Jesuits.
    Greetings.

13:03 if you want to taste pisco sour you need to get in Peru where is pisco from. In Chile you will get a so called pisco that really is "aguardiente". You get pisco distilling the grapes. You get "aguardiente=chilean pisco" distilling the waste of the grapes. Different processes, different final product.

But the mote was delicious? Also we don't live in Chile so it's tough to get in a Chilean home if you don't know anyone. We are just reporting what we tried from the street foods and it was muy bueno!
