In California we eat Avocados (some seasons out of our yard, some seasons from Chile) with most anything, especially as a counter to spicy foods...but almost never sweet (except it is used by vegetarians as a replacement ingredient for milk fats, shortenings, and butters in cooking and pastries). Personally, I think if I just substitute garlic flakes, fresh onions, crushed red pepper, and cilantro leaves for the sweeteners, virtually every south east asian recipe can be perfectly adapted to the West ;)
as I type this I'm eating corn chips dipped in melted dark chocolate, cayenne, crushed red pepper, unsweetened soy milk, potato starch, pea protein, roasted onion, roasted garlic, and cilantro
