What makes a book a five star read for you? I feel as though it’s a combination of storytelling, prose style, memorable characters, evocative scenes, compelling pacing, plus a generous dose of that inexplicable “IT” factor -that magical, special, unique quality that some books just have; and others, while perhaps technically excellent, don’t. It’s that sort of magic or power that exists in all of the best stories you’ve ever heard of, but it’s hard to explain.

By the way, over the next few weeks I’ll be posting my regular Friday video, but I may also be posting some bonus videos such as this one. Basically I just have more topics I’d like to cover right now. 😊 Stay tuned!

I'm expecting Charlotte Sometimes any minute from my library. It's fascinating that Farmer was a twin and wrote a book about twins in literature. I'm not fascinated with twins at all because I am an identical twin and therefore, have lived with all the mystique, mystery, fascination from strangers, and attention all my life. My twin and I feel like completely separate individuals in a world that keeps telling us we are not! LOL!! But then again, I may have to take a peek at the book anyways!

Thank you for sharing that, Donna! Given how you feel about it I think you might actually enjoy Charlotte Sometimes because it's NOT about twins but more about individual identity and what makes us different. Although the book on Twins and Doubles does look interesting! Once in grad school I took a class in noir cinema and did a term paper on "The Idea of the Double in Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt" (one of my favorite old black and white suspense movies!) I find mirror images and differences of two compared people much more interesting!

I loved time travel novels as a girl, 'A Traveller in Time' and 'The Root Cellar' being my favourites. This seems like a book I'd like.

Hi Celeste! Last night at midnight I finished "Sipsworth" by Simon Van Booy. I heard about this book thanks to you ! ! ! You mentioned it in your May 31, 2024 video, "Thomasina and Other Animal Tales: May End-of-Month Discussion (Low-Spoiler)!"
This book was fantastic and wonderful ! ! ! A FIVE STAR READ for me ! ! !😀
I can't wait to hear what you have to say about this book once you've finished it ! ! !
Now, this morning I am going to start either "Charlotte Sometimes" or "Thomasina". I can't decide.........
You know what????????? ....... I'm going to start BOTH, because I'm a grownup and I can do what I want ! ! !
I may even have potato chips and ice cream for dinner ! ! ! LOL
-Best wishes from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada ❤ 🇨🇦 🙂

Hi Celeste! I had not realized that I knew about this book until I saw you hold up the NYR Children's collection and then I realized that I do know of that one, but didn't know about it either, if you know what I mean! I am very curious to read it. Thank you so much for your lovely review, and for adding all the other titles by her. Very interesting!

Hi Heather, I wondered if you had seen the New York Review edition! I always hesitate to star my reviews because it’s so subjective, and a book that I love may be just about me. But I thought the story was really memorable! Especially the setting of The Great War, which I get sentimental about because it’s an era of special interest for me. Enjoy your tea!

There are 4 books that I “stumbled upon” when I was 10-12. Each was absolutely magical; I felt like each was “deliciously special” as well. Had you and I been friends when we were little girls and young tweens, I am certain we would have shared books with each other❤
Here are the 4 in no particular order:
The Velvet Room and The Diamond in the Window by Zilpha Keately Snyder,
The Ghost in the Swing by Janet Patton Smith, and Luvvy and the Girls by Natalie Savage Carlson. I would love to know if you or any of your followers have read them.

@@natalieanagnos5747 Okay, I haven’t heard of ANY of these, but I looked them all up and have added them to my TBR List! 😍 ( I saw The Diamond War
by Zilpha Keatley Snyder: The Diamond in the Window seems to be part of a series by Jane Langton).
Thanks so much for these suggestions. They all sound fabulous!

This book inspired Robert Smith from The Cure to write a song about it. One of my favorite songs….

Hey there! Yes, I love that song and mention The Cure around 8:00. That song just prompted me to make a whole playlist of “Autumn Gothic” songs. Charlotte Sometimes is on there, along with some Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc. 😊
