Yay for snow! What a lovely collection of cozy classics. 💗💗
@@insearchofwonder Thanks, Anne! 😊
I just found you! Put most of these books in my notepad!! We have so much of the same interest. Happy Holidays.
I do like to read both Christmas and regular selections. I found a Christmas in MN anthology published in the 80's while thrifting that I have saved for December. In October I got Hiddensee by Gregory McGuire for $1.99, and I'm reading that now. Barbara Cooney illustrated one of my favorite books that I read to my kids, which is Roxeboxen.
@@mariasmiles68 Roxaboxen sounds wonderful! Thanks for watching, and happy holidays!
I’m reading “Letters from Father Christmas “ by JRR Tolkien and “Christmas Stories of Charles Dickens” and “The Foxfire Christmas book”. Just finished all 8 of the Anne of Green Gables series. I really enjoyed rereading them. ❤
Wow! Wonderful reading list, Barbara! You're way ahead of me on the Anne books: I'm only just beginning the third book! The Foxfire Books bring back such vivid memories of growing up!
I love hearing about all of these winter vintage children's books!!☺ This December, I'm planning on reading a book from my childhood called This Way To Christmas by Ruth Sawyer. She's known for Roller Skates, but I never hear anyone talking about it this one. I read it every few years and it gives me such a warm nostalgic feeling. Plus it's a wonderful story and my copy has beautiful color illustrations.
Jessica! You've just introduced a new author to me! Planning on going down a Ruth Sawyer rabbit hole today! : )
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 Yay! She has such an interesting history. I'm on a library hold list for her picture book The Wee Christmas Cabin of Carn-na-ween, which features the wee people, like many of her books. Delightful!!
Oh my goodness. I just found you through this video. A kindred spirit.
Welcome to the channel! ❤
I have been reading the Ibbotsom Christmas book and LOVE it! She's going to be a bigger part of my New Year too. I bought the Macmillan edition because I've been collecting some of their smaller volumes and I love the cover so much.
Donna! I get a broad smile on my face every time Eva starts telling a love story. Her prose is so lovely! I feel like somehow, sentimentally, I'm "coming home" somehow, if that makes any sense...? The small Macmillan's are so pretty. And I love how the spines line up. It's just my bad insomniac eyes that are the issue - but I love little libraries. I especially like the Macmillan city stories - like London Stories, New York Stories, etc. And the poets!
It makes me sad to know that Barbara Cooney will never illustrate another story. I adore her.♥️
Isn't she marvelous? We just found a good copy of Ox Cart Man on the free shelf at the library!
Oh Goodness☺️ Heidi🥰 an all time favorite.
And it's surprisingly well-written!
Eight Cousins ♥️🥰♥️🥰♥️🥰♥️🥰♥️
When I was little, my grandmother gave me her old copies of Eight Cousins, Rose in Bloom, Under the Lilacs and An Old Fashioned Girl. Such sweet stories! I know you've read a great deal of Alcott! 💗
Love Winter Cottage❣️
Hi Deea! Looking forward to my reread. Winter Cottage has that "It" factor, doesn't it? --that makes a book so memorable and special! ❤
I think several of Ibbotson’s Adult stories have a ballet through line.
I think so too - ballet, classical music, old world Vienna, Northumberland, and travels to South America.
I'm currently reading and enjoying Hans Brinker... Definitely a good December read!
Wonderful! It just seems perfect for December! 🎄
Oh I also wanted to add that when I saw your video go up I made myself a hot chocolate and settled in with a blanket and it was just so cozy! Its snowing outside and we grabbed our tree yesterday and have not put up lights yet so its just this wonderful evergreen scent without all the bling yet. Was such a fantastic atmosphere and so relaxing! Thank you!💚❤💚❤
I love that scent of evergreen!
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 Its the best!
Hi Celeste! Lovely video! I had to laugh because I just received my next Eva Ibbotson in the mail yesterday! We read a lot of her children's stories, and I read her YA but I have not yet broken into her adult novels. We just read 'The Secret of Platform 13' in October. and we both enjoyed it so much. 'Journey to the River Sea' is my son's ultimate all-time favorite, and we did a reread of it last month too! Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates is a huge favorite of ours. Thank you because I never realized that Eight Cousins has Christmas association! (Although I probably should have guessed!) Was lovely to start my day off with one of your videos!!! Thank you so much!❤
Happy December! My pleasure! And I was chuckling when I saw your Taschen Christmas Stories, because I knew I'd be featuring the Taschen Andersen soon! ❄ I'll be doing an Eva Ibbotson author video in 2025 - I kind of went crazy and got most of her books all at once! 🤓 (I don't usually do that but some authors are like that, right?) Madensky Square looks good, as do several of her children's books. I bought one last July that starts on a hillside somewhere - Austria, probably? - that was drawing me in, rapidly. The title is escaping me right now. As an author, I love Eva's attitude toward the idea of a Platform 13 and the subsequent use of it in the Harry Potter books - what a generous, forgiving soul she was. PS. I think you'd like the illustrator of the A Feast of Light book.
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 I know right? I read that she said that we all take inspiration from stories around us and that is the way it works (something to that effect anyway). I agree with her....I think ideas and stories (and booktubers!) are a living, moving, organism that only works well if we share and reciprocate ideas! I have the Taschen version that has Anderson on one side and Grimms on the other. I love it, but it is missing a few that would be in your version. You and I are so often on the same page....you will see what I mean when I do my next "by-the-decade' book video! Are you getting as much snow as we are getting today? Its lovely!
@@WaterBearReads Oh no! I hope I didn't "scoop" a book you were going to share! 😶Yes, we've had snow, which has been nice, although today it was warmer.
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 oh no not at all!
So many wonderful books!
@@teresaglasco6082 Thank you for watching! 🙂
The Ibbotson ballet story sounds charming. I re-read 'The Box of Delights' last year it's evocative for me as I read it and watched the BBC TV version as a child. I also found a radio drama version last year. I plan on reading some winter themed books this year. I have a Christmas story by Catherine Gore to read.
Yes, I know it's quite beloved! I think I may go ahead and watch the BBC adaptation as well. Enjoy! ☃
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 🎁
Hi Celeste! In December I like to reread the winter pages of The Wind in the Willows, the little story or novella by Anthony Trollope called Christmas at Thompson Hall, and also some old wintry crime mysteries and ghost stories. This year l am going to read The Box of Delights.
Sounds like you'll have a very cozy time this month, Daria! Enjoy! I've never read Christmas at Thompson Hall. I'll be interested to hear what you think of it!
What an absolutely beautiful selection of books 😊
Thanks Debs! Happy holidays to you and your loved ones! 🎅
@ and to you and yours Celeste ☃️
What’s one of the best books you’ve read during the holidays?
I will always LOVE The Gift of the Magi. I have several versions. I love Tasha Tudor's version for its 1970's goodness (the Mrs. wears a mini-skirt) but love most of all, the PJ Lynch one. It has such lovely illustrations. I just finished Lanterns Across the Snow by Susan Hill. Now I'm starting Noel Streatfeild's short Christmas stories. Don't even get me started on my favorite children's Christmas books!
@@donnamacdonald2200 I LOVE The Gift of the Magi. Tears every time. What did you think of Lanterns Across the Snow?
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 meh
@@donnamacdonald2200 We have similar tastes, so I trust you!
There are so many good ones, this year I would have to say I enjoyed THE VANDERBEEKERS of 141st Street. The story revolves the last week up to Christmas.
So sorry that I am so late to the party! I did not see the video pop up on my screen and I just thought where is Celeste? So I went hunting and saw that I had missed this video. Loved seeing your trip to Ontario to your sister’s home. Have to say that I love the idea of having chickens and kudos to your sister for doing so. Her garden looks beautiful, and I love the arbor and the very tranquil water feature. Her bookcase was a treasure Trove of old delights. Another follower mentioned the book, The Warer Babies, an Old favorite of mine as well. I’ve never forgotten it from so many years ago. Dystopian novels are not a favorite of mine. In fact, dystopian novels rather depress me and so I avoid them. Now that I am old, I no longer have time to give into depression. Instead, I look for joy and peace. I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful. Mine was as I spent it with my son‘s family. My grandchildren bring me great happiness. I’m so proud of them. Both are excellent students. One is an avid teader and the other is a selective reader but both love the written word. Looking forward to the next video as always. Thank your sister for having us all over to her cozy home.
@@barbaradobson9298 Thanks! I’m sorry for posting my videos so chaotically lately! Yes, The Water Babies is a classic, and my sister’s copy is beautiful! Glad to hear that you enjoyed a good Thanksgiving with loved ones! ❤️
This was delightful!! So cozy.
love the road trip and chickens. Nice
@@daviddelaney6116 Thanks!
I bought the John Lewis Stempel book for my mother last Christmas. I intend to read 'The Dark is Rising' soon.
I love cottage country in Ontario! Also, just want to say you have such a lovely eye colour.
Thanks!
Hi Celeste! Happy Thanksgiving! I loved this video! Watched it last night while cooking! Beautiful visuals! Loved the chickens! Oh that bookshelf! Was Water babies one of your favorites too? I loved it as a kid. i also spotted The Little Lame Prince which is not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. Loved your reviews. Apologies for coming so late to this video...I didn't see that it was up! Been travelling so much so everything is out of normal right now!!🦃
Happy Thanksgiving, Heather! I hope you’re enjoying your travels! I’d actually love to do a reread of both The Water Babies and The Little Lame Princess, as I don’t remember either.
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 Ive been meaning to read The Water Babies to my son for over a year and we keep choosing away from it! I need to make it happen!
@@WaterBearReads “Choosing away from it” is such a great descriptor. I can apply that to so many things. It’s not really rejection;; it’s a conscious or unconscious choice!
Thank you for taking us along on your lovely visit to Canada 🇨🇦
My pleasure! Happy Thanksgiving!
So it's NOT just me!! I didn't like The Thirteenth Tale either. I thought the main character was morose and overly dramatic, and boring at the same time. Unfortunately, at the time that I read it, I never dnf'ed books, so I slogged my way through to the end. On a happier note, your sister's bookshelf was such a treat to peruse! I kept pausing the video to write down some familiar titles from my childhood that I had forgotten about and others that looked interesting. Thank you for taking us along on your trip!
Hi Jessica! I have so many fond memories of books as a child. I did have many of my own, but also have very intense memories of the books belonging to my sister. I've slowly been rebuilding my own library with these vintage editions as I find copies, online. Let me know if you end up reading any of these!
Your sister's place is so cozy!
It is!
I'm definitely looking for cosy books reads, it's dark and weather's wet again, though we had snow last week and that's always pretty to look at!
The perfect weather for snuggling up with a good book and something warm to drink! 😊
Hi Celeste, thank you for your video! So nice to see your sister’s bookshelves with a lot of old favorites. I have read The Thirteenth Tale a few years ago and I didn’t like it all mostly because of characters. It seems to me that there were some disgusting pages even, I don’t remember exactly. I thought it would be something in style of Charlotte Brontë, but I was very disappointed. Now I began to read Who killed the Curate, hope it will be a cozy winter mystery.
I’ve never read Who Killed the Curate! I hope it’s good! 😊
I enjoyed The Thirteenth Tale 7 years ago, but as a Jane Eyre disliker, I understand the position you’ve gotten into. 😉
@@laurac56 Yes, it’s hard to pass on something that everyone else loves!
Does anyone have any cozy plans for the holidays? 🦃🎄🎁 Or any cozy books planned?
I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been struggling with pain. I hope as the days on you feel stronger♥️ I have the Hall Family Quartet! Very different covers. I like your cover more🤭 I have a Victoria book. Thanks, Deea! Arthritis and sciatica run in our family. : ) Oh, well. I really enjoy the Victoria books! And the magazine. 🤎 Looking forward to Canada!
The introduction with the walk in the woods was magical. The closing with Mr. Charlie was a delightful treat. I have not been able to settle and read of late. Too much upheaval with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Trying to deal with gouging tradesmen and this electoral decision made by a slight majority. I am too sad to read right now. So I tend to my sick cats and do a lot lot of sit and stare time.
Just ordered Diamond in the Window based on your rec! The dream travel sounds really intriguing so looking forward to reading it.
@@spinstercatlady It’s fun. Also humorous with a quirky family. Not a five star read for me, but solid if you enjoy middle grade magic and mystery solving!
I'm very late to this vid (although I'm still in spooky season until the day after Thanksgiving haha), but you gave so many great recs! As a young girl, I devoured every Mary Downing Hahn and Betty Ren Wright book I could get my hands on (usually at school book fairs 🤍), and I credit them for my obsession with Victorian gothic fiction today. I loved them, but my Nan not so much bc I'd end up being scared we had a ghost at night 😅 Great memories!

Hi Celeste! I'm coming late to this video as I was swamped today! I enjoyed hearing your take on "The Diamond in the Window'. I have been trying to get permission to visit Tasha Tudor's place which was 20 minutes away from Rudyard Kipling's home in Vermont but every year I ask and every year my request is declined but if things ever change perhaps we can meet there! The Root Cellar sounds interesting, and I had never heard of it before. Your book choices are always so interesting. I'm going to have to read Dear Genius - @Amyofhearthridge is awesome and so aware of what is out there. One of my best friends is a stay-at-home Dad...I would love to read 'The Homemaker' and see if it is something he might enjoy. Have a wonderful time in Canada!!! I am putting The Thirteenth Tale on my TBR for 2025! Been meaning to read it but keep forgetting! Memory Police sounds awesome! I love Mr. Charlie Chips! Funny enough, my son and I are read Tasha Tudor's version of 'A Little Princess'. Ok sorry for the essay....have a lovely evening!💕
Thanks, Heather! Well, I feel like I didn't say enough about it. I thought the dream parts were lovely. Ooh, I'd love to meet at Tasha's place! The Root Cellar IS interesting. Definitely worth a read. I liked that as a children's book it wasn't saccharin... it was kind of hardscrabble, to be honest! Which as you know from All-of-a-Kind, I appreciate. I think you will really enjoy Dear Genius. As a book of letters, I don't read it cover-to-cover, but to pick up here and there it's wonderful. Thanks again to Amy! I would say if you or your friend is a fan of old movies like It's a Wonderful Life or The Magnificent Ambersons, you'll like The Homemaker. It's very cinematic and heart-warming. Ooh, Tasha Tudor's A Little Princess is the absolute best! Hope your son enjoys.
PS. When I don't put seed and nuts out in the morning, Charlie Chips climbs my patio screen and desperately stares in at me and rattles the screen like he's in prison behind bars. He lives under the porch.
Very nice selection as usual! The Secret Language was one of my all time favorite books as a child so I am looking forward to reading the book about the author's life. Love the wide variety of book types you always present.
Thank you! It's more a collection of letters than a bio, but I think you'll enjoy it if you love children's literature. : )

I need to bookmark this video for when I finish the 'read your own' books challenge. I'm really glad you enjoyed 'The Root Cellar' I thought you would since we share a love of Eva Ibbotson. I'm currently reading the first in The Dark is Rising Sequence - 'Over Sea, Under Stone' as Alice from the channel 'Alice and the Giant Bookshelf' loved it - to remember Alice who sadly died and a friend of mine's recommendation, she always marks the winter solstice by reading the second book, 'The Dark is Rising' so far I'm enjoying the children's adventures.

When I was teaching, I kept The Dark is Rising on my classroom bookshelf always. The entire series was very popular with my students. Great to see it remembered.
@@barbaradobson9298 I don't know how I missed the series when I was a child, it's the sort of thing I would have read then.
Loved your vlog and book choices!! We have very similar tastes. For November, I’m reading The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon (fantastic so far), re-reading Failure is Impossible by Lyn Sherr (Biography of Susan B Anthony) , and What An Owl Knows by Jennifer Ackerman
@@KAZHE63 Welcome! Thanks so much for watching. ☺️ Oh, all of those sound delightful. I’m reading Frozen River next month. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of it!
Hello Celeste, so glad to see you! Thank you for a huge book haul, so many interesting things. I am not a fan of fashion books, but Titanic Style looks marvelous. I just received the complete edition of Frog and Toad and had a great pleasure. Have a nice and safe trip and take care.
@@Daria-4215 Hi! I have such fond memories of Frog and Toad from childhood! ☺️
