@@jessicaw1839 Me as well. It’s always been my favorite season. Pumpkins, corn mazes, warm drinks, apple picking, jumping in leaves and Snoopy and the Red Baron on Halloween!
Oh it's been years since I read Charlotte Sometimes but I remember it being so sweet! House of Shades sounds super atmospheric. Foxlight looks STUNNING 😍
@@redheadreading YES! I found Charlotte Sometimes very bittersweet. I was really touched by the spinster, Lady Agnes. I am a sucker for anything set during the Great War, so combined with time travel, it really moved me. House of Shades, while not destined to be a literary masterpiece, was an absorbing, well-written page-turner which tells the “woman comes to a gothic historical house of secrets” trope from the perspective of a black woman. It’s just engrossing and eerie. And it also is respectful to people with developmental delays, which is important to me, as the mother of a child with Autism. I’m looking forward to Foxlight- and loved Katya Balen’s other book, October, October. 😊
It’s good! It’s written in what I’d consider a popular book club style, but the author obviously did her research on the time period and her turns of phrase are marvelous!
The Fortnight in September by RC Sherriff is one of my favorite books. Charlotte Sometimes looks so interesting. Thank you Celeste and happy September!
Please be sure to check out my upcoming vlog on Penelope Farmer and Charlotte Sometimes. The book is the third one of a trilogy (but reads perfectly fine as a standalone story). ❤
I love the sound of The Household, will look into that one for Victober. I have The Haunting of Aveline Jones on my Kindle so plan to read that this autumn. The cover of October, October is stunning, I love Angela Harding's artwork, I'm trying to see if the library has that but needless to say the site is acting up. The Wainwright Prize is pretty much the only book prize that I take any interest in, I must look to see what books are in the other categories. I'm currently reading Black Sun Rising by Celia Friedman, it's a mix of fantasy, sci-fi and horror and set in autumn. It's one of those books that has sat unread on my shelves for years and I've no idea why because I'm absolutely loving it. So many excellent recommendation, Celeste!
@@cathrussell2426 Hey there! It’s great to hear from you and I hope you had a great Summer! I’m also getting great recommendations from you!! There are some intriguing titles in the adult categories of the Wainwright Prize, too. I did contact them to see if I could “win” the collection (hee, hee!) but they haven’t responded yet. 😉
I read The Night Circus in August and adored it. It has such a cozy vibe. The Ladies Delight is a great read. I'm going to start The Hobbit with my daughters, and think that's very end of summer/fall feeling.
I have been reading Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters in play form -making me cackle- but also shocking me a bit. Not what I have come to expect from Pratchett. I am wondering if it is the guy that wrote it into a play that decided to take it to the edge. & also, Shakespeare's As you Like it. Just started a reread of Crime and Punishment, & Lewis' Abolition of Man.
I gifted Charlotte Sometimes to a friend's daughter recently, I need to get a copy for myself! Aveline was not my favorite, but I'm remembering feeling rather than reasons... Not sure why it wasn't.
@@novelideea Interesting. For a children’s book, Aveline was pretty supernaturally chilling! I loved it! Charlotte Sometimes has stayed with me on so many levels. 😊
I read Morganstern's Starless Sea and have not wanted to try Night Circus as a result of that experience. Beautiful writing, but the story felt to higgledy-piggledy & without a real point or resolve. If you like Night circus, I may try it.
@@novelideea Yes? I haven’t heard of Starless Sea. But yes, the structure of The Night Circus is a bit disconcerting. Very short chapters. I’m only on Chapter five but so far, the thing keeping me going with it is Jim Dale’s narration on Audible. I’ll let you know how it goes!
Hi Celeste! Been looking forward to settling down and watching your video all day! Have you read Impossible Creatures? I read the entire book out loud and cannot tell you what I read! I think I zoned out at the wrong place and got totally lost. I am going to give it a reread because some books just don't work for me as read-alouds, (usually those that are character heavy but not character-deep, if that makes sense) but can be a totally different experience once I read it to myself. I think that might be what is going on. My son listened and liked it OK...but just OK. Oh the Night Circus! I keep meaning to read that! The Penelope Farmer looks so good! All your book suggestions look amazing!🍁 I have been reading The Whisperwicks and enjoying it so far very much!
Ooh, that’s an intriguing title! I’ll have to look it up! No, I haven’t read Impossible Creatures yet, but your description of character- heavy versus character-deep is an excellent way to describe books. I often have difficulty with books that begin with family trees, seven generations of a dynasty of kings, etc. 😅 I’m enjoying The Night Circus so far but the jury is still out. I think what is keeping me going is Jim Dale’s marvelous narration. More to come on Penelope Farmer, tomorrow. Have a great weekend!
Oooh, great choice! I totally forgot to add a Mary Stewart! I have both Thornyhold and Nine Coaches Waiting, so I'll definitely get to one of those this Fall. Thanks!
OK...I have The Ladies Paradise on my paperback book shelf (never read), I ordered Charlotte Sometimes from my library, put October, October on my Amazon wish list and bought The Haunted Attic from ThriftBooks. Yep, all before 8:30 am.
Ha! Donna, you made me laugh out loud and I haven't even had coffee yet. 😊 I know NOTHING about Zola, so I hope The Ladies' Paradise is worthwhile. I am SO enamored of Charlotte Sometimes! I must warn you that in my other video discussing Charlotte Sometimes (which I'll share in the next few days) , I talk about how I discovered that it's the third book in a trilogy. But it worked absolutely fine as a standalone, for me; you can totally read it without any prior knowledge of anything else. And besides, the first two books are VERY hard to find. See if your library has The Summer Birds or Emily in Winter. More to come in my next video.
Welll, hello there! What books have I missed that I should add to this Autumn list? Let me know, and happy September!
