Congratulations to the two winners of this drawing and thank you to all who participated, as well as those who subscribe, like, and engage in bookish conversation! You are what makes this channel so worthwhile. 😊 Have a great weekend! And let me know what YOU are reading this weekend!
Yay, thank you!!! I will send an email to you. And congratulations to Heather as well! I love Miss Pettigrew, it's a favorite of mine. I think I will do a reread soon. :-)
Hi Celeste! Oh my goodness I won!!! Wow! Thank you so much! I watched this with a friend and we laughed so hard when you read my name! What a surprise! I will send you an email! Thank you again and lovely video! 💕💕💕💕🥰
Thanks for doing this, Celeste! A fun way to celebrate your channel-versary! And thank you for a balanced, honest review of the books you read! I think it's important to discuss what we enjoyed and what makes a book beloved - - but balance that with honest context and what some might find problematic. Otherwise BookTube just becomes an echo chamber of everyone simply liking books with no depth or discussion of the time period they were written in, outdated microaggressions in the text, etc. It's important to see where we are now, not just where we've been! Still, it's clear you have a love of vintage books and older stories, and that book love shines through! Have a wonderful end of summer! Oh, by the way, I'm reading some short stories this week, thanks to you. You are such a strong advocate of short stories and you've made me see short stories in a new way, so thank you!
I have an old first edition of Circular Staircase I pucked up at a garage sale years ago, but have yet to read. Sounds like a fun book! I rather enjoy reading some of those old sensationalist mystery novels, as they sorta remind me of watching Scooby Doo as a kid (if that makes sense lol). Also have the lovely Persephone of Miss Pettigrew that I also hope to read next Spring!
That makes absolute, total sense! In fact, I was down at the Strong Museum of Play and they had a display on all sorts of vintage children's spooky things for Halloween - Scooby Doo lunch boxes, Clarence's Halloween and Georgie (the ghost) from Scholastic Books, old vintage 1950's/1960's Halloween costumes, old 33 1/3 LP's of Vincent Price making spooky sounds, etc. I was in Heaven! I kept saying to my son, "OMG, this is SO ME! This is everything I love!"
Hi Celeste, thank you again for a delightful time. Enjoy your little vacation, and have a good time and be safe. I felt like you about Miss Pettigrew. I thought it was cute, but afterwards I passed it on to my sisters. I’m so glad that Heather won. She is certainly a favorite of mine on book tube as well. 😊😊😊
Thanks for watching, Cassandra! It has a lot of redeeming elements. Humor, wit, and a great time capsule of that era. Winifred Watson can definitely write! I just feel like it needed a balanced review. ❤ Yup, Heather has a great channel. So many incredible illustrators and titles! Definitely worth subscribing! 😊
Hi Celeste! Congratulations to Michael and Heather! It is sometimes fun to read those pulp, melodramatic mysteries. I hope you enjoy the end of your summer as well! It's already getting cooler here.
It is fun! I think because I'd heard that Rinehart is sometimes called "The American Agatha Christie," I was just expecting something a bit more Golden Age. But it was her first novel, so I'll be very interested to see what her later books are like. Happy end of summer! We are starting to get cooler at night, here. : )
I recently read The Circular Staircase, my first MRR novel, too. I agree that it was good, not great, though I really liked Rachel, the feisty 80-something year old main character. I've heard that Rinehart's book The Wall, which she wrote much later in her career (1938), is very good, so I'll likely give that one a try at some point.
I find it strange everything is concidered racist now a days but still little house om the praire books is extremly racist especelly ma ingals who hated and despite the natives.
@@katarinasvensson9801 I agree with you that parts of Little House are now considered racist, and actually just discussed that very topic in my last video! I don’t, however, think everything is considered problematic. I do think these books still very much deserve to be read because there is still so much contained in their pages which is excellent from a literary and historical perspective. I think rather than “cancel “ or ban the books, we should be having conversations about them, warts and all.
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 i agree completly this days so much is concidered racist but as you said it better to talk about it then too cancel it. I work as a school librarian and is forced to cancel old children books even uncle Toms cabin and Pippi Longstocking since the schools principal is aftraid of criticism.
@@katarinasvensson9801 That's a shame! What a missed opportunity to have a school discussion about these books, placing them in context of the time in which they were written balanced with modern approaches to reading them. On my channel, I LOVE old, cozy classics but I feel it's the least I can do to at least point out when I see outdated views and stereotypes, yet still find the author talented and the writing excellent.
