The f-22 doesn't just have an RWR, it has a true missile approach warning system, and I'm dying to learn more about it when it's declassified in 50 years 😂
The MWS on aircraft like the F-35, A-10, F-16 and AH-64 is a supporting feature to the RWR and CMD systems, and still presents information to the pilot the same way the RWR does. Mostly just because if there's a heater coming at my face I really just want to know it's there and what direction it's coming from I don't need to read the serial number on the side. The only exception to this is the DAS on the F-35 which gathers information not only on detected missiles being fired at the aircraft, but a MASSIVE amount of information on the environment. Including missiles older MWS wouldn't detect and things that aren't pointed at the aircraft at all. These systems probably won't be declassified for a hundred years! They'll be in service for hopefully another 60 in the USAF, and probably even longer in foriegn services. Recommend if you want to know more about our stuff, you come out and get a job somewhere we've sold to!
MAWS is fairly straightforward in concept. It's a bunch of IR cameras all over the aircraft which detect the missile in its burn phase and triggers an alarm if the computer decides it is coming at you. This system can be tied into an automatic countermeasure release, though that generally over-dumps your CMs, so better to do it manually and pace the drops.
The fun thing about the French one is that the Rafale's SPECTRA ECM suite jams radars so it can effectively prevent lock-ons or at leats make it that much harder to achieve a missile opportunity, making RWR effectively useless
