This is true for all VTOL jets. At least the take off bit is. I believe the F-35B can vertically land with full payload. But it can't vertically take-off at full payload. It's simply a limitation of current technology.

The Sea Harrier, especially the later FA2 was a mean mother in BVR. Not Raptor level but supposedly could dominate most of its contemporaries in BVR, apparently it was similar to a F-16 Block 60.
all the late Harrier IIs are surprisingly capable in BVR at least from their equipment - the American equivalent, the AV-8B II+ is equipped with the AN/APG-65, which should be roughly equivalent to the FA.2’s Blue Vixen

Yeah these new gen fighters are cool but to me personally, I think f14 - f15 era was peak us aircraft engineering, those planes were the most badass a fighter plane could get. Newer planes just don't have that oomph factor anymore.

@osmacar5331 The f-22 has seen some combat as a strike aircraft. I believe the f-35 is still untested. You don't need to have an aircraft see combat to know it has a small radar cross section.
Don't forget it's able to disable the Bismarck, which is Germany's largest battleship ever made at the time and despite multiple armaments the swordfish made it through as the Bismarck's armaments are not made for stringbags (ironic) and damaged the ship's rudder before being finished off by King George V later on

The Sea Harrier, especially the later FA2 was a mean mother in BVR. Not Raptor level but supposedly could dominate most of its contemporaries in BVR, apparently it was similar to a F-16 Block 60.
all the late Harrier IIs are surprisingly capable in BVR at least from their equipment - the American equivalent, the AV-8B II+ is equipped with the AN/APG-65, which should be roughly equivalent to the FA.2’s Blue Vixen

All the A10 has is its fucking stupid gun. at least thats all the pilots will use. the SU25 on the other hand? its got an assortment of bombs, both guided and unguided, missiles and unguided rockets, as well as a 30mm cannon. also the SU25 has been used in modern combat quite effectively, more so than an A10 could be, due to it not being slower than a T72 reversing.
Yeah these new gen fighters are cool but to me personally, I think f14 - f15 era was peak us aircraft engineering, those planes were the most badass a fighter plane could get. Newer planes just don't have that oomph factor anymore.
The f14 also costs more per unit than the f35 when adjusted to today's money value.

@osmacar5331 The f-22 has seen some combat as a strike aircraft. I believe the f-35 is still untested. You don't need to have an aircraft see combat to know it has a small radar cross section.
