Persona 3 never stops amazing me just how good it was. From it's story, to it's plot, the alegories to its world, the social links, and the mechanics ... all of them tell a tale of Time, Death, and Life. The game pushes time forward and you don't really feel it until Ryoji tells you that you will die... suddenly, the game's calendar system feels oppressive. Nyx and Ryoji, and Pharos, being who they are is beautiful and how they learn to celebrate life during its final moments has such a sad beauty. Almost like a hunter praying to its prey with respect for giving them sustenance. Nyx never sees its duty or nature lightly, it is a heavy burden thay it must do with respect. And the parallel of the last battle as Life, or a living thing, struggling against Death as they fight each episode of their life, for survival, staving off death again and again, until it finally succeedes, only for Death to retreat and say "until we meet again, take care," knowing it is inevitable. One day, death shall come and claim us, and it can wait patiently for our time, there is no need to rush. A level of brilliance like no other game has ever achieved. Atlus did themselves superbly. A true masterpiece.
I know it's been said a million times, so I'll leave someone else to say the thing we know everyone wants to say lol. As for what I will say? I always found it interesting that, in spite of the 22 major arcana being the focus of the game's social life sim gameplay hereon, Persona 3 always made its true focus end at 13. The 12 Arcana Shadows who are hiding the 13th in the fool, the avatar spouting 12 unique lines before finally coming back to the original, 13th one, even the simple fact of there only being 12 hours of the evening people are aware of normally, ignorant to the 13th one that haunts anyone with a persona, the potential, or those unlucky enough to be there to begin with... Everything with P3 returns to Death. You cannot escape it. And that's beautiful writing.
What about the "13th month" of the year being 1st month of a new year... as Death the metaphorical death of the Fool and the start to its other half journey. Makoto "dies" on the 13th month, to become the seal. Intended? I dunno. Cool? Oh, yes.
@@MrFreakHeavy I sadly would not say this holds too much weight. After all… something I left out but very much intentionally mentioned is the secret symbolism of how everything could be seen as 14 as well. After all, while the 13th arcana was sealed away, its seal was The Fool, Arcana 0, and combined with the rest up to Hanger Man, that still reaches 13. The first and last lines from the Avatar in the fight are one in the same, one is merely longer than the other. While the Dark Hour starts at 12 midnight, so too does a new day, and therefore does it also fit in the morning as 13 hours (something now joked about by Junpei in Reload even), meaning it’s capable of being 2 separate hours at once… 14. Why is this important? I’ve questioned this myself a bit, as the answer seems unlikely to be Temperance, as that arcana does not fit with the symbolism provided, nor does it tie in with this in any significant way. And the irony is, I already stated the answer. The Fool is the 14th major arcana, or rather, the first. Putting 0 first means that up to Death is 14. Simply fascinating in their utility of such esoteric details… Meanwhile, there is no such symbolism in the months used that I can find, or that makes sense. While we go through a whole years worth of months in the game, we only experience 11, and even then, not fully. The more accurate count is 9, only furthering how jarring P3 can be to some people who only played 4 or 5 where it gets much closer to 11, especially in 5’s case. I do feel the symbolism in the ending and the desire to end more accurately to an actual Japanese School Term overpowered any desire to actually fit the symbolism of 13 and 14 into the game. There may be something with the dates in the original release I may be unaware of, but I feel this is something that’d be a stretch at best considering even FeS made changes to the calendar and days fully experienced and played out both. Even removing some in the case of October 5th… yeah that one felt way too jarring to have free time in. Going from a Memorial to someone who was killed in front of our eyes to Changing Seasons did not work lol. Tangent aside, I feel this should show the problem with such an analogy. I love the symbolic idea however! If there was something more to promote the process, I’d actually believe it myself. Maybe one could argue for its recognition with The Answer/Episode Aigis? Though I doubt it, sadly…
Yo, what's up Sky! Oh yes for sure, I'm not done! My next project is going to be a documentary video/series all about SMT V, though it may be a hot minute before its anywhere close to being finished. After that I aim to eventually cover every mainline SMT game, as well as probably Persona 2, 4 and 5 at some point later down the line.
@@2icemann Loved it! Thought it was an awesome remake. The original will always be special to me, but I’m not unwilling to admit that P3R is pretty much the new definitive way to experience P3, aside from the lack of FeMC of course.
