Sadly not all schools gave up mandatory prayer right a way. I attended a high school in Indiana during the 68-69 school year and one of my teachers insisted that her classes did a mandatory prayer before every class. She further stated that anyone who refused to participate would get a failing grade in her class, regardless of academic achievements. For a student who came from a western school that was in adherence to the Court's ruling, it was my first experience in such. Needless to say I finally had to challenger her class and get a transfer so I could get graded on my performance not on someone's religion.

See Also: Confirmation Bias. I grew up in Utah, where 50% of the population is Mormon. Because they are constantly surrounded by people who tell them they're right, most of them never doubt it for a second...and many of them are quite arrogant in their faith. I suspect the same is true of Catholics in Ireland, Protestants in the Bible Belt, and Muslims in Saudi Arabia. Mandating conformity is a way for those who live in a bubble to make the bubble bigger...and thus more comfortable for themselves, even at the expense of others.)

Well spoken, concise, and loaded with logic. Nicely done, sir. I recently heard a local radio personality named Bob Lonsberry talking about his 29 year old son coming home for Thanksgiving. His son is in the military (Army) and he's bringing his girlfriend home to meet the family. Lonsberry said that when his son and his son's GF come home, they will not be allowed to sleep in the same bed, and not even in the same room. I was perplexed when I heard him say that. For a bit of perspective, Lonsberry is a pretend Mormon currently married to his third wife. He and his first wife divorced and his second marriage was annulled. Here's the thing...It's okay for his son to join the army and to possibly be shipped off to some armpit country to kill people, but if his son wants to make sweet love to his possible future wife, that is forbidden. What filthy heathen would want that to happen under THEIR roof?! Oh the horrors! Ya gotta love the lack of logic with Christians!

I grew up in Salt Lake City, so with regard to your lifelong LDS exposure, I feel your pain. When debating Theists, I'm always faced with Bible quotes that claim all men inherently know in their heart and soul that God exists, and the *arrogance* of that notion infuriates and sickens me. I love the way you clarify, "Religion is make believe," because I was recently contemplating John Lennon's "Imagine", and it occurred to me that all one has to do to, "Imagine there's no Heaven," is to simply STOP imagining Heaven. While descriptions of God, Heaven, and Hell exist in various literary and other media sources, the fact is that, in the absence of objectively observable and testable evidence, they are all figments of individual and/or collective fantasy.

    • @peet4921
      @peet4921 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Exactly !!
And talking about anything Theists do and claim, which can drive any rational person up the wall, i would like to quote AronRa himself about that word which seems to have a different meaning for Theists than us.
      TRUTH
'' How would you define what truth is?Truth is typically defined as “that which is concordant with reality”.
If we don’t know whether it is concordant with reality, then we don’t know whether it is truth, and we should be honest about that.
We should not assert as fact that which is not evidently true, because that is dishonest.
Logically then, truth is whatever statement can be shown to be true.
The truth is what the facts are because the facts can be objectively verified.
There are many facts that we know and can show to be true of evolution, for example, but there is not one fact that is positively indicative of or exclusively concordant with gods or magic or mythology.
So when I challenge religious believers to show me the truth of their religious belief, they can’t, because there’s literally no truth in it.''

What issue do you take with a "brotherhood of man"? It's a song that talks about doing away with the elements that divide us, such as materialism and borders, for example. And what has divided humanity more than religion?

This question is for all religious people; why do you cherry pick the parts of the holy books and discard all of the horrible things in these books. If the bible is your frame of reference, you have to believe the whole book. Why when confronted with all the evil things in the bible, you find a way to justify it. The bible condones slavery, rape, murder, torture, killing your kids, and war. Why is it that most religious people's world view is that all of the above is wrong...so why is it right because god says it is. Right is right and wrong is wrong; regardless who says it....Why is that so difficult to understand?

I was born in New York but my father was a auto mechanic, and was a transmission specialist. he was trained by Chevrolet for six years after being honorably discharged from the Korean war. so when I was quite young we moved out west. because mechanics with his experience were needed out west. so the first part of my young life was spent as a Catholic. but after we moved out west I had experienced several religious sexts. from Baptist, to Free Methodist, to Nazarene, to Mormon, and others. but when I was junior high age I ended up in a boys home. which was run by devout Free Methodist. and all of us boys who were in the boys home. went to a healing that was held the imperial four hundred motel. and I saw a spectacle that made me change my view of religion. and from that point on I was an agnostic. until somewhat more recently when I was introduced to an Atheist community. and the people I met were amazing they told me about being an Atheist and it fit perfectly for me. there was no obligation to be an Atheist which after forced religion was incredible. so I learned more and more about being an Atheist. untill I have reached the point I'm at today a confirmed Atheist. and it was hands down the best decision I have ever made.

Really, how secular do you think your society is? E pluribus unum got replaced by In God We Trust. How many politicians, on the federal level, are openly atheist? It is more acceptable for a politician to be a Muslim than to be an atheist - there have been two Muslims in Congress, but the only one to declare himself atheist lost his next election. At best, they can avoid the question and say they have no religious affiliation, but declaring yourself an atheist is political suicide. Evangelical Christians influence public policy - like the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel (a move which evangelicals believe bring us one step closer to Armageddon and the second coming). Evangelical support played a big part in getting Trump elected. There are constantly politicians proposing or enacting things like "religious freedoms" legislation to allow people to discriminate in the name of their religion - like not having to issue a marriage license to gays, or being allowed to remove birth control from the things covered by your employees medical insurance.

If my 29 year old military son wanted to bring his girlfriend home to meet the family, I'd want them to arrive safe and sound. That would be my thought of priority, and I can't imagine fretting over what they might do together once the lights are turned off. Maybe being comforted in the arms of a woman would make most men less willing to run off to war to fight and kill some trumped up enemy.

Virtuoso Joel I hate political "ism"s. What is 3rd wave feminism? I must have missed part 2. Isn't feminism just feminism? I thought it was all about women being equal to men (which I never thought otherwise). I met a feminist once, (and after she castrated me for being a man), I said (In a high pitched voice), "I treat everyone the same". She replied " That's a start". To me that's the beginning middle and end. I treat everyone with respect regardless. Btw my joke was just that. Many "ism" people get so serious. You need to be able to accept a joke about your self. I'm a sarcastic sod, and would be very confused if I didn't get a ribbing too. My only "ism" is don't think your better than those around you, and accept peoples piss takes and praises in equal measures. We all stupid fools who are trying make sense of it all whilst heading to an end which, lets face it, means it was all just a waste of fucking time (sorry, but I told you I was sarcastic). Anyway its all good, and I am talking too much. Laters x

Some would argue that the Miller-Urey experiment for example would suggest that the idea is at the very least plausible, even if we don't have a complete scientific theory about it YET. And it for sure is much more scientific than talking about a supernatural creator of some kind, right?
