- In this weeks video we dive deeper in this 1979 Honda XL185s engine to discover what lies beneath the carnage we have already witnessed with the top end. Honestly, I was a bit surprised..
We definitely have our hands full now!
Enjoy!

Really enjoying this tear down. Very insightful! Thanks Cody
Thanks man!
Dude you got sooo lucky on the bottom end ! I thought for sure it would have been lunch the way that top end look ! Glad it’s turning out good ! Loved this video btw ! Didn’t matter the way you made it !
In order to scrap the old gaskets I use a brass spatula. It makes a sharp edge but won't cut into the aluminum case.
You are a saint for making these videos
Another awesome video Cody! Bummer to hear about the audio but you did a really great job with the video regardless and that was really cool to see! Thanks so much for sharing and looking forward to seeing the rest of this project progress!
Thanks bro!!! 🤙🏻 means a lot
Haha,REMINDER CODY.............."Is this MIC cable plugged in? ".............then Proceed!!! Lol. Great video Man.
Thank you for working on the old stuff!!
I found a standard practices service manual published by Honda and yes the round/chamfered end of the nut goes TOWARD the washer. The flat side goes AWAY
Nice background music. Thanks.
It turned out OK we liked it. Thanks
Super cool video!
i' m going to need this

Best video, I am rebuilding my xl185s at the moment. Very helpful. Cheers bro
Hi Cody, thanks for doing this strip down, it's really helpful to have an explaination as you go (& good job on the audio overdub too!).
I have an xl185 that has seized too, except it was running at the time. I think it starved of oil, and the bottom of the piston grenaded! The piston hit the valves, and conrod flopping about wrecked the barrel. I haven't stripped the bottom yet, but expect it will have bits of metal all through it!
I'm considering whether it's worth rebuilding this engine, the parts cost really begins to add up when a few things are damaged and need replacing. I would find it really helpful if you could discuss this sort of dilemma- is it cheaper and easier to find a replacement engine? Many thanks, Kyle
Will you be doing any videos on the 3rd Gen Magna that's behind you in the beginning?
Very nice narration. Maybe preferable? 👍
What brand and model of gasket scraper is that? Looks like a good tool
Special socket- sprag socket?
I really like this format too. But, takes a lot of time to do! Is it really possible to get the parts you need? I'm struggling to get things for my 1995 VFR750.
Not to mention special tools as a hobbyist....
Anything is possible man. Money is what gets in the way!
@@TheMotorcycleMD Well, I got the money, so I will continue my search 🤘
During disassembly do you ever mark items with a sharpie to determine which side is out or getting the correct orientation for reassembly help?
Good idea
👍🏻
I have a 79 XL185 S I need to put a clutch in do I need to soak it first? I’ve never done a clutch on a bike before
"Coat new clutch discs with engine oil" taken right from the '79~'81 Honda XL125s - 185S shop manual. You should get one, mine is a reprint and wasn't too expensive. Think I got it off fleabay.
What the name of the special tool ? How much ?
