    Gedore is very popular in South Africa. My father only uses Gedore. Most to all the Gedore tools you can buy in South Africa is made here and very well priced. I bought a locally made adjustable wrench recently made by Gedore, bullit proof tool.

    My dad bought two of this sets in the late 70s, still owns them today and the chrome looks like new.
    I think the finish is one of the reasons people, at least here in Germany, first think of Stahlwille spanners, they just look and feel more defined, the Gedore finish looks like a 5-10€ China set, especially the letters. But using them I actually prefer the feel of the Gedore form and finish over my Stahlwille spanners.

      dranfonzel the gedore finish is supposed to be rougher. They sandblast them with low grid after forging to get this rough surface. First of all the chrome sticks better on the surface and if you have very oily hands you still have enough grip. Bahco has some nice satin finish... Looks good but is less grippy. From optical point of view a nepros or snap on chrome polish looks the best. And could be fine if you don't have an oily environment. But here in germany mostly only cheap spanners have a polished chrome finish... It is changing but until a few years ago it was not considered as a quality sign

  • @zimports
    @zimports 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I've grown to appreciate the satin chrome on my No. 2 deep offset set. At first I thought it looked cheap but it helps with grip considerably with oily gloves. Full polish wrenches covered in oil feel like a fish trying to slip out of your hands in comparison.

      Well observed! Over here in Germany the highly polished chrome versions of hand tools are the hallmark of crappy noname aka chinese cast iron (!) stuff, esp. wrench-lookalikes. They all bear a "drop forged"-phrase somewhere, and they usually break on first real use and are not even worth their scrap value. ATB

    Gedore spanners are probably the standard here in the Netherlands, I see them everywhere I go for my job (service plumber) from hobbyist garages to large factories.
    I use them as my main wrenches too, some double open ends and mostly their combination wrenches.
    For ratcheting spanners I’m partial to facom, and then their flex head variations!

    I bought a box wrench 18/19 gedore spanner a couple of years ago as the faithful brand one I had been using to remove a tap valve just bent like toffee. The wrench just took the part out really solidly and no sign of weakness. That was a couple of yrs ago . Had the same problem with another tap couldn’t get the cartridges out different size 16/17mm bought a set of Draper. Bent like toffee when I tried to remove the part. Ordered a gedore 16/17 on eBay came a few days later and it took the part out without any fuss or bending. Conclusion the box spanners by Gedore are strong hard and definitely the best box wrench I’ve used. I am now thinking of getting some more Gedore spanners☺️

    on the finish - inherited some old tools from my father - some quality stuff from Gedore and Hazet, some cheaper tools like Mastercraft and of these the matte finish ones still look like new indeed while the same set in polished finish definitely shows more chips and wear. All this stuff has spent their time being chucked into a trolley and just being knocked around for a good 25 years - 50 years. I tend to go for the matte finish tools more often - probably because they grip better.

  • @davidweston9115

    The finish on my 1b Gedore spanner set has lasted many years , i use the 13mm , 19mm often along with 30mm and 27mm .they are used in a harsh heavy vehicle enviroment . they are worth the money and will out live other brands . for smaller jobs i have Stahlwille 13b series combination spanners as they are more compact in terms of length . my open end set is Hazet but if i had my time over i would have bought Gedore or Stahlwille.

    I've been using and abusing Gedore 1B ring-open endend spanners, and they are some of the best wrenches available. The matt chrome is very, very durable. It indeed doesn't chip. However some wrenches do get rust spots depending on use. But I think I like the feel of the stahlwille wrenches better.
    At the heavy diesel shop I work at we use both Stahlwille and Gedore, and neither spanner breaks. Which I think is a testament to their durability.
    Mind you, in Europe Gedore is very well known and most automotive workshops have Gedore gear. Snap-on tools on the otherhand are hardly used.

    • @GermanToolReviews
      @GermanToolReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, thanks for sharing. Do you ever use any other spanner brands? Heyco? Matador?

    • @271production
      @271production 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heyco and matador are not brands that I know of.
      I think that with spanners, much more than any other tool, its a case of get yourself a GOOD set once, and you're set. Gedore, Stahwille, it doesn't break so no need to go buy other stuff.
      That being said, I recently bought a set of 'Roebuck' spanners, because they were on sale and came in a nice pouch. So far really nice spanners for next to no money. Always useful when I need to cut, bend or weld a spanner to get some weird bolt off. Wouldn't want to do that on an expensive Gedore wrench

    I have a beginner's question on drop forging please.
    All things being equal except for the Blowing Force of the drop forge hammer. Will a hammer with a higher blowing force produce a stronger metal?
    For example if you had a Lasco HO-U 500 with a Blow energy of 50 [KJ] vs a Lasco 2000 with a Blow energy of 200 [KJ].
    Will the 200 [KJ] hammer forge a stronger metal? Again all other things being equal . Only the Blow energy is different.

    Why are these double open ended so hard to find, and combination wrenches so common? I would really like a set of the classic double open ended.

    • @GermanToolReviews
      @GermanToolReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is always preferable to use a box end as it minimizes chances of damaging the fastener. However, there are cases where you can't use a box end so you always need to have the open-end ones handy as well. I believe this versatility is the reason the combination ones are more popular than both the double open ended and double-boxed end wrenches. If you are tight on space than double open ended are the way to go.

    On a trip to Europe recently I picked up a couple of ‘Walter’ combination wrenches. I really liked the finish and they seem to achieve good definition with their forging. I only needed them to weld to a machine as a handle so cannot vouch for their fit, strength or stiffness.
    Have you ever encountered ‘Walter’ tools and, if so, what’s your opinion?

    • @GermanToolReviews
      @GermanToolReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of companies have used the name 'Walter' in the past because it is a common surname. Was is Carl Walter? There is a C around the W in their logo. www.cwalter.de They are known more for their specialty spanners, like offset wrenches. Their impact sockets are supposed to be top notch. I have never heard anything bad about them, but their stuff can be quite pricey.

      It is a Carl Walter. Wasn’t that expensive in UK (~$6 for a 13mm). It’s a 290 series. See Page 8 of the following pdf www.cwalter.de/images/pdf/2016_schraubenschl.pdf
      I’m happy to mail it to you for a look if you’d be interested. I also picked up a CK ‘Dextro’ screwdriver that is ‘Made in Germany’ and can send that too. I also have a Halfords-branded ‘Made in Germany’ long screwdriver.
      Interestingly, to me anyways, the UK version of Home Depot, called B&Q, sells a range of ‘Wiha’ tools alongside the budget Chinese options. Screwdrivers and screwdriver sets mostly, and these in the basic soft-finish handle.

    Best looking wrenches I've seen and reasonably priced, will probably get a set.
    How do these double open ended ones compare to combination wrenches? They would save me about half of the price and weight, but is the box end important for non professional use?

    • @BlackAcePlays
      @BlackAcePlays 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your comment is already 4 months old, but yes, I'd definately get a box end set. You should use the ring whenever possible, it's just less likely to slip off the bolt and f*ck up your hand and bolt head.
      Anyway, you should have 2 spanners of each size. One to hold the bolt, one to open the nut, so just get both sets. :)
      If you are a non-professional I can also recommend the brand "Proxxon Industrial". Cost less, but can take quite some abuse.

I was skeptical at the beginning because it is not made in Germany, but I turned out my favourite wrench in my workshop becuase the finish doesn't get slippery with grease and is durable too. Also the deep offset in the ring side makes it practical.

      Gedore did at one point have a manufacturing facility in Brazil. It was sort of like the one they have in South Africa where it was only really used for production in the local market and was rarely exported. I have never had a chrome issue with my wrenches. The only time I could see that being a problem is maybe on a lower end Chinese wrench. They say they make their wrenches that way for durability but I think the Germans aren’t into shine like the rest of us. They look cheap the way they make them with that finish.

    Gedore is very good, but you should have a look at Facom........ more elegant and very durable. Yes Facom is French!
