There was a time that software manufacturers tried to make their software as functional and versatile as possible. During the last decade this has totally changed to a policy to restrict as much a possible. Adding functionality is trivial, but all effort is put in allowing exactly what the manufacturers wants and restrict everything else. This it true for Windows and Apple. I am happy that Linux still adheres to the policy to enable as much as possible.
I still use for graphic editing iPhoto Plus 4 which was originally for Win95. It came with a scanner for free. Later versions Ulead released took out most of the features unless you paid the premium price. Except for layers it has most of the stuff basic Photoshop has but loads instantly on starting.
Well... The thing I should say is that the world is already too restrictive with it's politics, economy, wars, sanctions and so on that I hate when software is being restricted. Dude, it's just 1s and 0s on the piece of chip initially owned by you!
The most amazing part of the video is that floppy disks that are over 25 years old still work just fine. I seem to remember hearing they would last 5-10 years. All six of them beat the year range (well, five because he didn't actually use the sixth disk).
Floppy disks back then were simply higher quality. Most people remember them being crap because the last few batches made between 2007-2010ish were complete landfill out of the box. Hell, the US military still uses floppies to store launch codes
@@TheRedCap Sadly they retired the old stuff in 2019 and went all solid state. Up to that point, however, they were using IBM Series/1s and 8" floppies (which I find strangely badass). 👍

A few years ago I found a box of floppies with factory DOS programs. Each one was stored in it's own plastic case and the cases held in a case with 60 slots. Mostly obsolete business software, but there were 11 good games. Still have some of them running in Dosbox. Never had a problem with Windows reading the factory floppies, but about 20 of them were recorded personal discs and Windows was not able to read them. I have an older iPad that still works fine. I haven't played games like Jazz Jackrabbit in a long time. 😆 I even have a BT mouse and kb that should work fine. I wonder if I can find a BT Driver for DOS?

I wonder if Apple would change their mind again. This year iSH finally got pushed to the app store (after the developer and a few other made a bunch of noise on social media and basically lobbied Apple). iSH literally lets you run x86 Linux executables and it even has a package manager, so I don't see why iDOS can't be allowed again.
I don’t think the iDOS dev had enough power and time to argue with Apple who more often than not don’t bother about feedback unless the feedback goes inline with what they want to do.
Thank you so much. Brings back so many happy memories. I started work in 1987 writing software for Windows 2.03, and have been a devoted fan of Windows ever since.

I just discovered in a video from another youtuber, that Sony Mavica's, namely the FD-200 have a USB port that shows up as a removable mass storage device using a floppy disk.
Great video as always! I remember having the iDOS app that had those free DOS games on my iPhone a few years ago. Never knew that it'd end up becoming kind of a "rare" app nowadays.
I'm in awe of what you seem to be able to get off eBay over there. Here in Australia it just seems like new things, cheap or expensive, or a very limited amount of second hand items. Also I guess if the floppy disk solution didn't work, you could always copy all of them into a a folder within a USB drive and install from there.
Back in the day, what I usually do is to copy all the contents of the floppy to a single folder, and then run the (custom) setup. So much more quick than change floppy drives in the setup runtime.
You have the patience of a Saint. Such a well detailed explanation of how to do something that I would never need to do but at least I now know how to do it. Thanks.

I really shocked when you could do that. And with all the problems you run into, you always get to fix it and continue the process. Well, its not a Michael MJD video without something goes wrong and that whats make your video unique. Great job Michael.👍👍👍
The most amazing part is how easy it was for you to fix the old tech.. nowadays you'd need to break 10 layers of epoxy, glue, micro-screws to swap two parts that end up being incompatible
Well, it's Apple so... The EU is going to force Apple to use USB C as a charge port. Won't be surprised if Apple is going to get rid of the charge port, and sell you charger, cable and wireless charging pad separately. Create a problem, sell the solution.
@@seththebeatmxchine The biggest joke is Apple was pushing USB-C the hardest, to the point where it is the ONLY port available on their Laptops, if you want to attach anything which isn't USB-C, like a Monitor for example, you'll need an extra special apple dongle. The Lightning port had its benefits, but it has been superseded by USB-C in every way. They only keeping it on their phones because it is a proprietary standard, and everyone making accessories for it has to pay license fees. I'm not surprised they give you a charge cable which doesn't fit most fast charge adapters on the Market, since most of them still use the USB-A Port as outlet, and the more widespread USB-A to USB-C cable to connect to the phones.
@@seththebeatmxchine They announced removing charging bricks from the box starting from the iPhone 12 last year, which is why only a cable is included. They say it’s because of environmental reasons. Samsung and Google already followed with the no charging brick box after Apple did.
@@achuuuooooosuu Yeah I wouldn't know when they announce anything that not my scene. And it doesn't make a difference. It's just a way to make more money. By not giving you a charger they save tens of millions of not hundreds of millions in the long run but not having to provide one in box, make more money by offering a separate charger, AND is it's all under the guise of "protecting the environment". And they still make the brick that would be offered just sold separately to make more money. It's an image thing, it's marketing. It's a perfect ploy. Believe you me, these companies don't give one single fuck about the environment. These are the same companies that have fucking 12 y.o assembling their phones. And the other companies only followed suit because now they can get away with it because Apple's doing it and they get to save millions too. It's a crock of shit.

I put all my software which require elevation with admin credentials, then I run program manager as that user account. So eveything is automatically elevated. I love the nostalgic design
And at that time, I used to think, with the advancements of video compression we'll fit a whole movie in there. Fast forward and I seen PDFs, PSDs and even JPEGs(!) bigger than that. All formats that existed since that time, now that I think about it...
Excellent. I have an old iPad and a galaxy tablet. I would love to put XP on one (still have the install disc) and Win 3.11 on the other. Except the rest of the modern world gives you the same product but nearly double the capability at half the cost. Yet Apple sheep will still defend Apple. No one remembers that Apple at one point gave the most advanced features in its phones. Currently they are one generation behind other manufacturers. And still the highest cost. Your getting abused and like it just admit it.
Honestly though, how does Anker do it??? Their products are relatively affordable, nicely designed, and really reliable. Plus, they make pretty much every electronic accessory you could need, and they are always readily available for fast delivery on Amazon Prime.
Oh, now that is interesting.... Michael could do us a video on that!
Just don't buy Apple. Nobody should be playing their stupid game of walled gardens.
You can still get idos if you sideload it
@@Michael-zf1ko Well if i just like apple products and just want to use it as a normal phone, why can't i?
Thank you so much. Brings back so many happy memories. I started work in 1987 writing software for Windows 2.03, and have been a devoted fan of Windows ever since.
You just got a sub. That was amazing! The dedication and time you put in to get there was outstanding! Look forward to future content!
I have learned (thanks to Micheal) that if something is stupid but it works, it is not stupid. I also learned that never settle always push to see what you can do to keep your projects going.
Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Congratulations, you just combined two genres: instructional videos and thrillers.
I think a bonus we all wished we could see would be to see just how fast the cards on solitare dance down the screen when you win a game. You know the old "Processor speed Test"
When people ask me why Michael MJD is my favourite youtuber I'm going to show them this video!
I agree with that

I just discovered in a video from another youtuber, that Sony Mavica's, namely the FD-200 have a USB port that shows up as a removable mass storage device using a floppy disk.
Great video as always! I remember having the iDOS app that had those free DOS games on my iPhone a few years ago. Never knew that it'd end up becoming kind of a "rare" app nowadays.
You definitely rolled the "install x on y" tech TH-camr dice. And this one was great actually thanks I enjoyed it

This man is the most patient person I have ever seen.
One of the handy things I found many moons ago was a Gateway install CD for WIn3.11. No more bloody floppies!
Until you got an installer that watched for the changing of a floppy and had no way of otherwise continuing the installation...
Makes me feel so old and proud that I still have all 3 of my super drives and that they are still of use after so long. Keep up the great work.
Didn’t expect that i am going to be that excited seeing that blue setup screen. Good ol days.
This kind of content gives me hope for the future. So many mfr's try to lock down their devices, but as MJD showed, there is always a workaround.
You have the patience of a Saint. Such a well detailed explanation of how to do something that I would never need to do but at least I now know how to do it. Thanks.
This video is a classic, Shout out to Micheal MJD. The video with the intermission music 🎵 was on point 👉 at 22:50. The determination of this video was phenomenal. Sincerely keep up the informative ℹ️ post videos. 😲 💪
I commend you MJD how persistent you are in this video. You kept coming up with solutions and never give up. Inspiring.
I am so impressed that he actually got that to work there couldn't have been more obstacles
oh WoW i have not seen windows 3.1 in forever and HERE you install it on an APPLE IPHONE of all things , i am blown away ...thanks for this video
The amount of dedication in this video to get those floppy disks to read on an iPhone. Kudos man you earned that like and sub, personally I would of just hooked it up to a pc extracted the files using the floppy drive, and move all the files on a usb stick and installed windows via the usb. Still a great vid no short cuts love it. Lol
this is the most michael mjd video i have ever watched. great video as always michael 😄❤️
I love the aesthetic of that zip drive, wish they still made gear like that
I love it when you go through so much hassle for us to show what can be done.
I just remember back in the day I would copy the files from the floppy disks to a directory and then install off the directory to C:\WINDOWS. Made installation so much easier and faster! But to see Windows 3.x installed on an iPhone.. that's hilarious and I LOVE IT! :D
I still have my first computer with 3.1 installed. I've taught my grandkids the joys of playing Duke 3D, Blood, Quake, and Doom.
That rant about overpriced Apple accessories was beautiful!
Yeah, I definitely loved it.
Apple, the least likely tech company to develop open source, and yet this guy installed Windows 3.1 onto an iPhone. This is impressive. :) I don't like Apple nowadays, but I am glad this guy hacked it.
Windows on Apple is surreal...
@@thatguyalex2835 Hacking anything Apple with Microsoft= Hackintosh. :)
@@andrewn8002 I remember hearing that term used for installing MS on old MacBook laptops back in the mid 2010s. I am glad that spirit is still alive, even though Linux is better than Microsoft. They should try installing Ubuntu on an iPhone. :)

You're simply the best and every new video from you is a real surprise, I love how you always are the first one on TH-cam to make such type of videos! By the ways, are you going to update to Windows 11 when it releases next week? Would love to see something like a comparison between the first and final Windows 11 release. :P
I don't think he can, since he has an i7-7700k, which doesn't support Windows 11. Never thought I'd see a 7700k on the incompatible list. Even running a VM of Windows 11 might not work. (All it says is that TPM 2.0 is required both on the host as well as the VM.)
The only thing he can do at this point is upgrade his computer to run Windows 11.
Wow! What a great job! When there are option to copy the content of the floppy drive to the phone and run setup from there, you want to make it more interesting.

Can we just talk about the 40 dollar dongle and how it's litterally more expensive than a fast charger
Well, it's Apple so...
The EU is going to force Apple to use USB C as a charge port.
Won't be surprised if Apple is going to get rid of the charge port, and sell you charger, cable and wireless charging pad separately.
Create a problem, sell the solution.
@@timhartherz5652 My wife just got an iPhone 13 and it's better than that, they give you a USB C charger cable only. What a joke.

I work in IT and I used program manager on windows 11. My custom apps work when using batch files, icons are a bit tricky to get, using resource hacker. I put all my software which require elevation with admin credentials, then I run program manager as that user account. So eveything is automatically elevated. I love the nostalgic design
We should install Windows 98/ME on the iPad Pro. That would be a far better experience and 98 is still DOS based.
Isn’t Windows 98’s DOS a newer version (7.x)?
I remember when zip disk came out, how amazing it was to put a 'massive' 100MB on a disk.
And at that time, I used to think, with the advancements of video compression we'll fit a whole movie in there. Fast forward and I seen PDFs, PSDs and even JPEGs(!) bigger than that. All formats that existed since that time, now that I think about it...
Nice that you are experimenting with screen capture. keep up the good work as always.
Excellent. I have an old iPad and a galaxy tablet. I would love to put XP on one (still have the install disc) and Win 3.11 on the other. I've been using the Galaxy as an MP3 server with a BT speaker in my bedroom. It's battery runs down quickly but it works fine plugged in.
This will be a great project to keep me busy during this winter.

that sponsor transition was amazing
Unfortunate to hear that you spent $69 on official Apple dongles. Best wishes you'll recoup the money back!
Why? He opened the product and they do what they claim to do. If people want to experiment, that’s fine, but not to the cost of others (vendor).
That sponsor spot was smooth.
I just had a blast running 3.1 on my android recently. I used it to extract the wallpapers from Christmas for windows. To make wrapping paper.
Honestly though, how does Anker do it??? Their products are relatively affordable, nicely designed, and really reliable. Plus, they make pretty much every electronic accessory you could need, and they are always readily available for fast delivery on Amazon Prime. I sound like a sponsored ad but like, I feel like it s actually true.
