Fun fact - There is a lot of software that still relies on XP and even older operating systems. This is why the activation is still important. If Microsoft shut it down, many services, such as gas and electric companies, process controls and others essential services would no longer have the ability to operate. Some of this software is so sophisticated and complex that recreating it with current versions of Windows would be too expensive.
@@ethanwasme4307 You are correct in the sense of support, however, activation is still available for any older version of Windows that requires it, this will never change.
@@syarifairlangga4608 You are thinking to narrowly. I''ve worked with a lot of industrial machinery that runs windows 2000 and windows XP. They have to keep this alive for legal reasons, or otherwise people would complain that they cannot use software that they purchased. (Later software gets around this by including a clause in the Terms of Service that it's "licensed, not sold". Adobe learned this the hard way when they were forced to deactivate the activation servers for their CS2 products from 2005 for technical reasons, and as the software's ToS didn't have that clause, they had to release the whole suite DRM-free for anyone to download online.)
It should be like this, if a company isn't going to maintain a product or make it available for purchase then it should be publicly released. Imagine "buying" or "investing" in a software (whether it be a videogame or work program) to find out you can't use it anymore because the company behind it stopped existing or they decided to remove it entirely and hence not allowing you to use it because it requires internet connection.

In my experience, some (foreign country) touch tone systems have trouble picking up the touch tones when you are on speakerphone and your side is not muted. apparently the static noise is too high or the system may pick up echo of the tones played locally (if your phone does). Mute your side and recognition will be better instantly. (The touch tones will still be sent).

Thanks. I did this 3/16/23 and was impressed. In my specific case I had a P2V (Physical to Virtual) VM (specifically a Dell Latitude D830 from 2008) that has a Dell OEM Windows license. When running in VMWare Workstation (on a recent Dell desktop running W10) the XP OEM VM needed to be activated (safe bet that XP noticed a significant HW change going from the 2008 laptop to the VMWare VM). I called the number, spoke to the bot and had the bot text me the Microsoft generated magic numbers. The VM activated. I was very concerned that it wouldn't work in the VM due to the Dell OEM XP version, but it did in this case (maybe becauue of some kind of Dell BIODS/UEFI pass-thru???) . Why do this in 2023? We have OLD HW/SW that ONLY runs on XP. This was just a test with a scrap laptop: the VM and actual laptop will be scrapped/recycled.
Why don't you do something about it, genius. You have a whole task force behind you, plus the great L himself (if I'm talking to your pre-Episode 25 self).
That’s so interesting, me and my friend actually tried this and it actually said that ‘this service was discontinued’. I was quite surprised to see it worked for you!
That brings back memories. The automated phone activation when I did it back years ago seemed more reliable, probably because I did it on a landline calling a local number.
4:00 maybe try holding the numbers for a second or two. That way the sound of the number (it just sends a specific tone for each digit) is transmitted longer and has a better chance of being picked up properly. It always works for me.
Some technology nerds worldwide set their computer interfaces to English, because since it is the lingua franca of computing, it makes some things easier. For example, looking up an error online.
That dog and poney show certainly brought back unpleasant memories. Don't feel bad, I live in America and speak excellent English and still had trouble with the bot understanding me and that was a long time ago. I think one time I even tried saying the numbers phonetically like they do in the military but no good. You really have to have the patience of Jobe to do this sort of thing. By the way, I've got two copies of XP which I've been thinking of installing on a newer computer, plus a Dell Latitude with XP already on it, man, I love that OS.

I just watched this while installing windows 7, awesome vid btw, love old operating systems, such a bunch of nostalgia and kinda fun to mess with them.
I'm impressed they kept that server/phone number online after all these years considering windows XP is completely dead and vulnerable to every virus in the book.
I have (for fun) XP 64bit, and it works well, no virus or hacks this year. I think the 32 bit version had more problems, but mine is working well and 24/7 on internet (doing nothing)🔥

I was so happy when they switched to an automated system instead of actual people back in the day. It was so awkward to read out this enormous number to a person
And it was easier on a home phone too.
It would be cool if there still was a real person on the other line after all these years.
The actual agents were extremely rude and demanded to know why you were activating. I was always tempted to say "Fuck you. That's why" but it was my job to activate the computers. :( I imagine a lot of the scam callers are those same agents.
@@8ullfrog lol
Actually there was a human agent listening throughout but kept rejecting your codes just to have a good time…..
Now imagine that one microsoft employee just looking around and seeing some guy that activated xp by phone recently...

What's funny is that this dumbass could call them for free from Skype. I live in Russia, and I always call US toll free numbers from Skype. It's free.
there's got Russian toll-free number that is still working for phone-activation. I don't know why he is used the us number

But so frustrating and time consuming
I'm impressed they kept that server/phone number online after all these years considering windows XP is completely dead and vulnerable to every virus in the book.
I have (for fun) XP 64bit, and it works well, no virus or hacks this year. I think the 32 bit version had more problems, but mine is working well and 24/7 on internet (doing nothing)🔥
@@VicGreenBitcoin there is basically no difference bwtwen x32 and 64 bit configurations. Why would it have more problems?
Not really. For the average user, the viruses of concern aren't OS dependent anyway.

As I can see you are learning sin/cos/tg/cotg formulas :D I'm learning it now too. Good luck with that. It's pretty boring to remember every single of them :D
Remembering sin, cos, tg of 30°, 45° and 60° is easy peasy. The worst part of all is when you have to use sin, cos and tg in trigonometry, and even worse in Physics
