I’m still just mind boggled that none of these guys were completely knocked out. Jennings was running on autopilot sure but the fact these balls are hitting them in the head at almost 105mph and these guys don’t get immediately knocked out or worse is mind boggling
If you watch the last one with McCarthy, he was probably the closest, in my opinion from what i could see, to being knocked out. If you watch the slow motion replay and keep a close eye on his throwing hand, as soon as he's hit and starts going down you can see it curl up! Very similar to some of the knockouts you might see in MMA or something of that nature.....or if you watch NFL and saw the second concussion that Tua got in the 2022 season and the way his hands took a very distinct posture that you could tell was completely uncontrollable! And then after his head bounced off the ground and he started to sit up, his hand is just kind of "there" against the side of his face, which wasnt where the ball hit him. You can tell he isn't with it at all in that moment!

People think a 90mph fastball hurts, which it does but a liner screaming back at you at 105 is terrifying.
Well there's the addition of pitches have a certain range of control. Like one getting away from you vs intentional hitting....there's a bit of a faded line. You'd need to be so unbelievably talented to be able to hit a 98mph fast ball with a bat with enough control to snipe the pitcher's head. That's 10000% a freak accident. Like the entire 178 degrees of where you could hit on the surface of both the ball and the bat and then the some -12 degrees to 89 degrees range vertically and about 130 degrees horizontally from the plate, they hit the perfect spot to send that fastball right back at the pitcher's face. It's beyond terrifying, it's something that statistically shouldn't be happening in like centuries between incidents.

Yeah, the full video is even scarier. He stood there for a couple seconds with his hands on his knees, semi-supported by the catcher, then he staggered one step sideways and went down to his knees. He was completely on instinct there for about 20 seconds, lights were on but nobody was home.

I knew Matt Shoemaker, we went to church together growing up. He wound up having to get surgery to relieve some swelling on his brain after this, but he’s fine now

I can't imagine what'd I'd be like to be the batter who hit one of these. You immediately feel bad but then still have to run to first. It's really horrible that there isn't an immediate stoppage of play for injury. I know it'd be impractical, but the people are the important part of the sport at the end of the day.
Won’t be surprised if we start seeing head and face protective gear on pitchers in the near future. Batters and catchers are expecting the ball to come at them and are much more readily able to dodge out of the way than a pitcher who’s just thrown the ball, and they wear helmets. The ball can also come at a pitcher significantly faster than a pitch headed towards the batter.
yea fr if it was me i’d prolly just run to the dugout cuz i wouldn’t be able to say i got a base when i hit the pitcher in the face but that’s just me
@@gurk_the_magnificent9008 that will probably at some point be a possibility, the other thing pitchers have to defend themselves from a line drive minus their glove is. Most have kinda like plates on the sides of their hats that are built into it but it doesn't help much, in little league and high school I was beaned back at the mound twice. Once hit my throwing shoulder and the other the side of my head, the second one I was never the same and couldn't really get on the mound anymore after...
You could not enforce an immediate stoppage rule even if you put it in place because it violates both human pyschology and common sense. It's literally three or four seconds that they continue playing and most of the time it's because they haven't registered what happened. Even when you see a thing like that you're naturally on autopilot a few seconds. The players also aren't the ones who give attention to the injured person beyond verbal "Are you ok". It's the trainers. If anything, a lot of players around distracts and hinders the trainers from getting to the injured player. The trainers start moving from the dugout as soon as it's clear they're needed. There's no reason to penalize the players for acting on instinct for four seconds when there's nothing useful they could do anyway to help the injured man.

I know in girls soft all at the HS level the pitchers wear masks/helmets but the ball is bigger there's an issue with vision if they out a mask on and a helmet will fall in the windup.

The one at 1:38 with Alex Cobb was brutal. You can hear his skull crack as the ball hits him.
The fact that some of these players are able to walk off the field after getting hit in the face by a hard ball at over 100 mph. Shows just how F'N Tough these players are. My respects to them.

I hit one back to the mound in pony league that had ambulences show up. thank god one of the coaches was an emt. hit him square on the the breast bone. stopped his heart. I skipped a year of playing because of it. My heart goes out to these pitchers.
Im not a baseball fan but how pitchers don't have helmets for this exact reason is beyond me
Listen I get that it might affect performance but so does a concussion, and you can't play baseball when you're dead
The weight of a helmet would mess up the pitcher's mechanics, you would see a spike in shouoder and elbow blowouts. Pitchers hate any changes, their body has to be sligned perfectly every throw. Might also see a sharp rise in hit batters.
To implement this you would need to start it at Little League and make pitchers use them from the beginning of their involvement. Not hard to DC o, but it would take decades. The frequency of comebackers like this us pretty low, so someone mwybe figured it up and decided a sore head and pisdible concussion vs 4 or 5 elbows wasn't a trade.
Hitters also promise to be resistant, not because they want to hit the pitcher, but because by dint of what they are made of, hard helmets shine, and that will draw the hitter's eye. Its the way human eyes are made, they track movement and reflection.
It could be overcome, sure, but its not just poking out another new rule. It would be very hard to implement and baseball doesn't have the smartest governing body in pro sports.

I say the say same thing but with hockey. Like I think in the NHL they should wear the full caged helmets. The visors only help so much and pucks can still get underneath. I think alot of players would agree they would rather sacrifice a bit of vision if it meant saving their career or possibly their life
@@-ryuzaki-9989 well here's one I can answer lmao. It's the exact opposite, while cages are a thing that they can use having pucks hit them in the face is so incredibly rare that most want the performance over safety
Which given what level they're on I can understand. Though with baseball it seems much more common, but I also only see complications so who knows
I got a line drive right back at me to the face when I was 15. Caught it turned and threw it to second for a double. I still remember it like it was yesterday chills run down my back. There’s no thinking in these just reaction time. Glad I caught if not I wouldn’t have my real teeth. Felt like the best player to touch that mound lol
The way pitchers follow through with their pitch, they are in no position to protect themselves.
yea its very common nowadays that youre taught to bring the back leg down into a fielding position like an infielder so that this is much less common
I was surprised at how many lefties were in this comp. And I have never seen a comebacker to the head live but I imagine it is far more terrifying.

I got a softball in my face on my left eye, 6 stitches out cold for mins , unconscious, concussion.
When Aroldis Chapman was a Red, he took a come-backer to the head in a Spring Training game that required surgery. Could have killed him.
They showed that Jennings hit twice, the one that I remember most is from the late 80's, involving the Giants, when Will Clark played first base
I have said this in other comback videos. The play needs to immediately stop and attention is needed. The guy can take first. Theres more important crap than continuing the play. I wish they would wear helmets but this play doesn't happen enough to justify the "keep on playing" mentality.

My son's all played Little League baseball and the pictures all had to wear helmets because of a junior high kid that got hit in the head and had brain damage. Why do MLB pitchers not wear helmets? If they get hit this often it seems like a very serious health hazard!
Players Union CBA makes it optional for them I am pretty sure...they probably have to do that cuz no one wants to play this very skillful, yet fuckin boring ass game....

I’ve seen others where pitchers, catchers and umpires get drilled. The other person felt horrible, especially the one where a 2 year old was hit. Personally I would never bring a kid that young there.

You gotta love the sportsmanship. When trainers from BOTH benches rush the mound to make sure they’re ok. 105 mph to the dome is highly not recommended.

That's hard to watch.
I have a serious concussion from a car accident. I hit the windshield and had on a seat belt but I was never the same. I have some double vision. I forgot people's names that I knew for 15 years. I may stutter and i may be slower to think of a joke. I used to be very fast with jokes and come backs but now those jokes just hit a wall at times.
I've come a long way though and I've seriously improved over the years. I'm almost totally healed but that was 27 years ago.
Concussions can be very serious.
The fact that some of these pitchers just walk it off is wild!
So why can't pitchers wear helmets? Even some new age flexible foam that form fits around the head?
That last guy was posturing in a way that means brain trauma. It's just a matter of time before someone dies.
Maybe the field vision. Maybe.
He had to have emergency surgery. They had to temporarily remove part of his skull to relieve the swelling pressure on his brain. took him like almost a year to recover.
Amazing that this doesn't happen more often but I guess until it becomes more commonplace or a pitcher is killed there wont be much done to prevent this. That said, I would not want to see pitchers wearing helmets or face masks but I know years of attempts to create hats with some form of protection never banned out. And of course to be effective in this hyper competitive environment focusing on finishing in a defensive posture is discouraged.
I always have a hard time watching this stuff. As someone who pitched softball and lob ball, and who has been hit in the head honestly a handful of times, it's tough to watch.
I wear a mask now because equipment is so advanced now and the softballs come back even faster now.
Question: Is there any rule that forbids the player to check or assist the injured pitcher? I maaaay understand that arriving 1st base until the umpires pause the game for medical check, but after...is the player (who swing the bat) unable to leave the bse and check fot the other? I would inmediatly run to the pitcher after waching that my hit hurt them like that.
Gut wrenching stuff. I remember Daryl Kile getting hit in the mouth and staying in the game. One of the most unbelievable things I ever saw.

When i was playing college ball had a hitback break our pitchers eye socket and he was blind in that eye for a couple of months.
I was playing catcher at my baseball game and we have a pitcher machine and I got in the private spot. No armor no ground just straight there and you know what my coach said when I was crying bc of it. Walk it off but luckily I was able to stay in the game
If it whacks the pitcher on the noggin, bounces up into the air, and somebody catches it before it hits the ground, does the pitcher get credited with an assist?

A lot of pitchers wear a protective plate inside their caps above the ears to help protect now. A bulky helmet would mess up their mechanics.
Not only that, a helmet would save them from a lot of external injuries yes but helmets dont mitigate concussions revived from the impact of the ball to the head. Look at the NFL. They all wear helmets that are supposed to keep them from getting concussions. But they still happen.
Being up and on your feet means nothing when it comes to concussion. There can still be damage. There have been intances where people have had head injuries, seemed absolutely fine and shown no symptoms, and the next thing you know they're dead from a bleed on the brain.

I would say on average the ball travels at an exit velocity of 100mph once hit off of the bat, so it is just a matter of the angle and trajectory of the ball at that point determining if it hits the Pitcher or not. Think of a car accident at the speed but rather than the impact spread across your entire body it is focused and all confined down to a small area increasing the kinetic energy into a fine point making it much easier to penetrate through, or to shatter the bones very violently in a small area....so do you want the impact of a 100mph car crash focused all its power as its smashing into your eye socket would you think that is:
1) No big deal, walk it off!
or
2) Very very bad!!!!!!!!!!

This video popped up in my feed today and goddamn did it trigger. I was a fastpitch pitcher for 10 years growing up and i took a line drive to the jaw after ricocheting off my forearm. Even after the ricochet (which docs xrayed twice because they werent convinced it wasnt fractured the first time), i atill had stitch marks going up my jawline and would have had to have my jaw reconstructed if it had been an 1/8th of a inch lower. Each and every one of these made me cringe, I was actually at the game where Shoemaker was hit, but yeah...Jennings was by far the most terrifying.

This right here is the reason pitchers need protective head gear. They are closer to the batter than any other player other than the catcher. They don't have but milliseconds to react.

luckily the head is a small and round target and most balls graze of it, but anything on the front must shatter those facial bones for sure.
