    My Model 3 started smoking at the Supercharger too a few weeks back! I immediately terminated the charging session but when I got out, I noticed that it was just steam!
    Apparently, the heat pump can let off some steam when cooling the battery…

      Wasn’t it that Tesla was so straightforward and easy in using? Now we have to follow a training how to use a charger because Tesla drivers are scared loosing their charging spot? I think the problem is with Tesla by designing a wrong kind of charger.

    • @Maarten_vd
      @Maarten_vd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@pilotandthecity8527 The chargers are designed better than anything else. For example, after you plug in your car, there is no need for RFC, apps of other ways of payment. So you plug in the charger and thats it. The supercharger network recognizes your car and you dont have to do anything. Tesla will dedict it from your account. Things all other charging stations in the world could learn from.
      Then the cables, they are designed in such a way that they will not touch the ground ever, even if they are not plugged in properly. This ensures the cable stays clean and is relyable without being dependant on behaviour of end users. Thats good design.
      Car manufacturers all have the choise implementing the chargeport at the same side as the mayority of the EV's. (or implement it on both sides). It's not Tesla's responsibility. Honestly, other EV owners should be gratefull Tesla is opening their network for them.

    I don't really get the fuss about where to park. If the parking space is occupied, it is occupied. If a Tesla charges at any other charger with two DC cables and uses the left charging spot, a Taycan or another Tesla can probably also not charge the car. Cars with charge port on the left, should start filling up the SuC from the right, cars with charger port on the right side should start from the left. In the worst case scenario one stall can not be used. If Tesla sees a problem, they should fix it and do as all other charger manufacturers and create locations/chargers where the cable reaches all positions.

    This is why Tesla is trialing other manufacturer charging in Norway. Over there people are actually considerate of other people's situations. Even if we had the CCS connectors here in the U.S. most folks couldn't be bothered to even think about how their decisions affect others and would park how they please, usually in the most inconvenient manner possible. To use the idle pump, one would need to go around the line at the entrance on the less busy street, go around the corner onto the busy street with the narrower lanes, slowly edge into the lot, and then do a 4 or 5 point turn in the small space in order to reverse into the idle pump.

      A UK provider, MFG, started installing 150kW eVolts at forecourts (good sites actually) but with very short cables. Commendably they listened to feedback and retrofitted much longer cables, I expect it won’t look pretty on the current Supercharger design but it will probably have to happen if Tesla becomes an energy supplier to all (which it probably has to in order to maintain access to new grid opportunities).

    • @thegores34
      @thegores34 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Longer cable make sense from ease of use for non Tesla users, but longer cables = more resistance losses in cable so everyone will pay a bit more. Clearly the original short cable design was done for Teslas only to maximise charging efficiency. The faster you charge at a given voltage, the greater these losses will be since losses are proportional to the square of the charging current. There are also similar losses in the car itself before the battery, which is why what you see as delivered electricity on the charger can be quite a bit more than what actually goes into your battery

    According to Norwegian law, the last part charging posts are illegal, they have not complied with the law on universal design and therefor are discriminating against wheelchair users. The curb prevents the wheelchairs from reaching the chargers and 10% of parking spot should be sized with 4x6 meters.
    The sollution where you parked first are better then.
    But, Teslas are not the worst chargers, i have a lot of bad examles from other vendors, but the great part are that they are now fixing up and all new charging stations will be available for everyone. 🙂

    You know you say this is a "solution" I have to argue this is not. This is a massive inconvenience for all parties. Tesla and charger networks need LONGER Cables like wtf ? you can afford extra length if you got that many stalls.
    Normal Petrol stations have long enough hoses that can reach to the opposite side for a reason. For example like this!

    • @seabream
      @seabream 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...I don't remember ever seeing anyone fill up a car from the far side before. Everyone I recall pulls up to the pump with the filler door facing the pump, or if they get it wrong, like maybe they're in a rental car with the filler door on a different side then they're used to and they went from habit, they pull out, turn around, and then fill up. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it seems like a bit of a niche use case.

    • @seabream
      @seabream 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, longer cables have more disadvantages than cost. Longer electrical cables result in higher energy losses to heat, especially with DC power. Which means that for the same power delivery, your cooling equipment for the cables needs to be higher capacity, and your flow rate for the coolant loop around the cable needs to be higher, which means you need a thicker cable, either for higher diameter cooling channels, or stronger walled cooling channels to run coolant at higher pressure. This makes them heavier and more difficult to manoeuvre for people, even more so in cold temperatures, which gives a poorer user experience. You also have to worry more about people leaving part of the cable on the ground and having a tripping hazard, or them getting damaged by snow ploughs, or getting run over, or abrasion from getting dragged on the ground. The ground aspect can sort of be mitigated by having them suspended from retracting spring winches, but those can decrease reliability, and increase complexity of installation and maintenance. I have seen and used DC fast chargers with longer cables and, while I can see their utility, I think that where space allows, having charging layouts that allow for shorter cables (e.g.: a stall you can pull up to facing in either direction, or to one side or another without blocking another stall) are better than having chargers more tightly packed, but with longer cables that you're counting on people putting away properly. Lots of people don't even do that with air hoses for tire inflation stations, and those are a lot lighter and easier to manage.

    Actually, BMW has the charge port on the right side which is the right side.
    Why?
    When you charge AC at typical roadside parking spots, the AC charger is on the pavement which is right to you from the drivers perspective.
