Behind The Scenes - Corbet's Couloir

  • In March of 2012, Teton Gravity Research filmed a segment for The Dream Factory on the most challenging in-bounds run in the United States -- the infamous Corbet's Couloir at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. On a bluebird day, the TGR crew put together what may be the heaviest session to have ever gone down on this run riddled with history. John Spriggs kicks off the session with a giant back flip, Griffin Post sends the West Wall, 13-year-old Daniel Tisi airs it bigger than most grown men ever have, Matt Phillipi spins a giant 360, Max Hammer throws a huge switch 180 and local Jeff Ledger does his signature front flip. There's no doubt about it, this session was "all-time."
    Behind The Scenes -- Corbet's Couloir is a DVD extra from Teton Gravity Research's newest film, The Dream Factory.

    Back in the 70's, when I lived in JH, people were hucking huge air and doing flips. I skied Corbet's and it is intimidating for sure. But there was one magic morning, only one in 8 seasons that I lived there, that there was NO DROP into Corbet's. The snow was so piled up it was simply a super deep, super steep cruise. Great memories. Thanks for the awesome shoot. Made this old ski bum smile.

      I had a day like this once, not at JH but at Aspen Highlands, the runs with cliff drops were just completely dropless and it was amazing.

    Note that at 0:23 the trail signs show Corbet's to the left and East Ridge Traverse to the right. Is there a double-black diamond traverse anywhere else in North America? I took that traverse one time. Crazy. One bad move and you're probably toast. Skied a lot of the chutes at Jackson and that traverse sticks in my mind as one place I will avoid in the future.

      I know what you are saying - I am a 47 year old progressing skier and I wonder if I'll ever have the skills enough, young enough, to even flirt with the thought of doing it! I reckon at a certain age you'd just say forget it, you either got too old to mess around with it or did not get to an ability level young enough to mess around with it - time just ran out on you. And maybe it's for the best, this borders on daredevil type shit!

    Once you're past the lip,it's quite an easy piece for a decent skier, especially in those conditions... Of course the only problem is to get past the lip. My brain knows that jumping it is altogether simpler, but I guess if i'd ever do it, I'll be more like the guy at 1:09 than the guy in green at 4:45

    • @VisserJoost
      @VisserJoost 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can't drop in by jumping.... Have you been there ?....
      It's a straight "fall" it's not jumping at all....
      You can "ride out" Courbet with one or two "soft" turns...
      A quick turn in the beginning makes it a lot "sketchier", then you're flirting with rocks/walls.

    • @VisserJoost
      @VisserJoost 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see what you ment now.... with the guy in the beginning at 1:09 ....lol.
      Well, that makes it a lot more difficult. The key is speed (and just balls...). You have to deal with very high speed, if you master that, this is not really a hard "peak"...
      (It's a cliff fall....)
      But now I understand what you mean, haha....
      Yeah, that's how a lot of people can "check of" Courbet couloir....
      (and then tell everybody how they "ripped" it....)

    • @twochordcool
      @twochordcool 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, don't know if it's ever easy at any point - but definitely looks like the trickiest part is past you once you are safely 25% of the way down! Looks like if you can land it properly and have your balance on landing you'd be in pretty good shape to ride it out.

    • @Quatuux
      @Quatuux 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, the green guy's way to do it actually seems easy for a freerider, with his low speed the jump is not as huge as the others.

    Chute 75 at Squaw Valley is similar to Corbett's, (45 degrees, ~15 foot cornice) except you land in a mogul field on 75. Corbett's seems more intimidating because of the rocks instead of trees. Like trees are any softer to hit ;) . Both are very classic steeps.

    great shoot. epic for sure. Don't mean to be a stickler on american pronunciation, but this run deserves some respect, and couloir should be pronunciated correctly. Just on this video alone, there were 3 different ways people said it, and none felt comfortable saying it. So as a climber, and avid hiker, who dated a french girl. I'm setting the record straight. It's a french word, and is pronounced "cool-wah". Thank you for the great video. I love TGR!

      It wasn't a fail. What you need to understand is that when skiing over drops of that magnitude if you land feet first you'll snap both your legs like twigs, you have to land body first. Whether it be on your side or on your back but it's the only way to land if you want to keep all your bones in one piece.
