Like the instructor said, call it. When your ready your ready.
To your point, the instructor knows that a student can learn a lot by the example set by somebody not hesitating and just dropping in. As if to say "see? just like that, just go."
I prefer to build a small jump, have someone lift the rope, and approach with some speed so I can back flip into Corbet's. I'll send you a video of me doing it in my next life.

Well sometimes surfing you wait all day for a good wave so you need to take it and not wait and miss out. Skiing, the mountain and snow will be here for a very long time so theres no rush or need to cut
That's because you are surfing with all the good surfers. If you take a bunch of noobs to Jaws, I think you won't have much problem asking to go first while everyone else is still gathering their courage.

Everyone knows everything, When I was 17 back in 1977, I climbed the Grand Teton and getting a permit was nothing. Now everyone and their mother wants to climb everything. You now have to go off times and to more remote locations if you are looking for something special. Its out there if you are willing to do the work.

I don't remember if there was a fee. They make you pull a permit to hike the PCT and other trails out west. I think mainly because everything is getting overrun with people.

He jumped too far and looks like got caught in some loose snow, getting stopped in place. I tried and I have enough mobility to turn my leg and feet to similiar position, but considering the forces on landing and with skis put on, I guess he was just lucky

Former friends were at MSU in Bozeman, in late 70s, and close to Dougie Coombs. They told of a day with huge fresh powder, and watched as Dougie lept in, and disappeared (with snorkel!) under about 7ft of new... they described it like watching a mole tunneling underground.
Some respect for the first person going down the right side between approx. 0:23 and 0:50 - that didn't look bad at all, it was neat and controlled ... the other two going down the right ride were a lot less convincing, but I think the first one, well it wasn't kamikaze or free-style or whatever, but that person pretty much had the technique down!

also people have speculated about what is the steepest angle possible to ski....at how many degrees is it still a) possible for the slope to hold snow, and b) possible to hold an edge.... I guess if you huck a 100 ft cliff that's kinda like skiing a 90 degree slope, lol, or if you straight-line some insanely steep chute, then holding an edge isn't really an issue, but the fact that people can actually hold an edge on that side-wall is really amazing It looks to be waaay beyond 60 degrees and closer to 80 degrees...it exceeds the steepness where I would've thought it's impossible to control speed, but I guess that fact that's it's got some ruts, actually gives the ski's a little bit more to bite into...
Pierre tardivel I think said 70 degrees is possible. He has over 100 first descents. A magnetic protractor would measure the angle. I am guessing 50-55...but I've been wrong before!

Phillippes at Mammoth is about 50 degrees and yeah it's steep but you can link turns in there pretty easily if you're good and side slipping it would be nothing at all like side slipping this. Some long lines down Highland Bowl at Aspen Highlands average about 43-48 and again they are nothing at all similar to the top section here. 70 sounds about right for the limit of a skiable descent though

I think he as was just asking to drop in. The kids were all kind of jerking it along. He was there and gone. No slide slipping. I have a high-end expert skier and have ask tourist the same thing when they are making a lot about nothing. What takes them a long time to get down is very comfortable for me.

A lot of people talking about the attitude or politeness of waiting vs not waiting for the kids in the lesson. Just my 2 cents as an instructor: there is no reason to take a group at that skill level down that run in the first place. By letting your kids scrape and climb their way down a run that far above their level, they arent learning any real skills. Its mainly just the instructor boosting his own ego showing himself how hard of a run he can guide his group down. It might help the kids' confidence a little bit, but their parents' money would be much better spent learning to be smoother and faster on single black diamonds with moguls and some short steep sections. At the same time, if one of them falls there, on that ice, they're sliding for a very long time. He should know that mountain like the back of his hand as well and be able to take them to runs that strike a much better balance between challenge and comfort. It might feel like a milestone to just barely pick your way down some world famous run, but much, much, more can honestly be said for learning to be smooth and tearing it up down the chairlift line.

I had to come into this video because I literally yelled "JUST DROP IN ALREADY!". I understand that these drop ins can be scary, and even quite dangerous.. but I spent 10 years boarding and these drops always frustrated me. A dozen plus people standing there, all eventually going to drop and ive gone 3 times lol.

Don't try to go slow. Commit yourself to pretty much a freefall and stay balanced on your skis with your upper body going down the slope first with your skis following. That is the only way they can turn, with your weight over the tips. Also, drop in from the right heading across the slope to the left of that exposed rock. As you go by the rock, throw your upper body down the hill and back across the slope. "Separation!" That will give you a snap leg angle change which will roll your skis over so you can make a turn back across the slope where you will do the same thing to turn back to the left. You ski and make turns with the positioning of your upper body, not with your skis. Oh and, if you don't ski off the lip and just slide down it, you aren't Skiing the Couloir.
You just gotta jump. You're not going to break anything. You know what you're doing. If all the kids can do is slide, they shouldn't be on it yet and need to get the hell out of the way!

You are right it was flat and packed. I landed across the hill and on rebound got skies pointed down hill before edges caught.

it's crazy to me that they actually take a bunch of little kids up there. Imagine being the instructor (or the parents)....that's even scarier that sending it off the cornice...cause you can tell the kids how to ski it, but you can't necessarily save them if they f it up....putting your own limbs and ligaments at risks is one thing, putting the limbs and ligaments of a dozen pre-teens at risk is another

Dude says “you’ve had your whole life to do it, these kids are just getting started” idk why but that kinda pissed me off. Not everyone grows up in ski land, had the parental upbringing/financial situation to get into skiing young. I’m 26 and just now getting into it…that comment screamed privilege to me
I think he as was just asking to drop in. The kids were all kind of jerking it along. He was there and gone. No slide slipping. I have a high-end expert skier and have ask tourist the same thing when they are making a lot about nothing. What takes them a long time to get down is very comfortable for me.
@@bnice2all you literally started skiing at age 5 dude, that’s the definition of growing up in it. I live in bumbfuck central illinois, where there nothing but farmland for miles, we drove four wheelers. On the other hand those kids have longer to live and experience than me, so why should I have to wait when ima die sooner
@@bnice2all definitely can and do have the resources to go skiing now, haven’t decided yet though what I like most, skiing or boarding. I’m getting into mountaineering and skiing seems more practical in the long run

A lot of people talking about the attitude or politeness of waiting vs not waiting for the kids in the lesson. Just my 2 cents as an instructor: there is no reason to take a group at that skill level down that run in the first place. By letting your kids scrape and climb their way down a run that far above their level, they arent learning any real skills. Its mainly just the instructor boosting his own ego showing himself how hard of a run he can guide his group down.
It might help the kids' confidence a little bit, but their parents' money would be much better spent learning to be smoother and faster on single black diamonds with moguls and some short steep sections. At the same time, if one of them falls there, on that ice, they're sliding for a very long time.
He should know that mountain like the back of his hand as well and be able to take them to runs that strike a much better balance between challenge and comfort.
It might feel like a milestone to just barely pick your way down some world famous run, but much, much, more can honestly be said for learning to be smooth and tearing it up down the chairlift line.

I had to come into this video because I literally yelled "JUST DROP IN ALREADY!". I understand that these drop ins can be scary, and even quite dangerous.. but I spent 10 years boarding and these drops always frustrated me. A dozen plus people standing there, all eventually going to drop and ive gone 3 times lol.

Don't try to go slow. Commit yourself to pretty much a freefall and stay balanced on your skis with your upper body going down the slope first with your skis following. That is the only way they can turn, with your weight over the tips.
Also, drop in from the right heading across the slope to the left of that exposed rock. As you go by the rock, throw your upper body down the hill and back across the slope. "Separation!" That will give you a snap leg angle change which will roll your skis over so you can make a turn back across the slope where you will do the same thing to turn back to the left.
You ski and make turns with the positioning of your upper body, not with your skis. Oh and, if you don't ski off the lip and just slide down it, you aren't Skiing the Couloir.
