Three Fire Ant Colony Casting Session, Part 1: Big Colonies Hidden Under Small Hills (Cast

- In this video series I cast a cluster of three fire ant colonies with aluminum. This is the first cast of the three. I had expected these to be fairly small and was surprised by the size of all of them, especially this first one. To dig their colonies, the ants remove dirt while digging underground tunnels and use that dirt to build the surface mound. In general, larger fire ant colonies have larger surface mounds but this can be deceiving. Rain can wash away the dirt of the mound leaving a large colony with a smaller-than-expected mound.

When my dad passed, we tore down his shed & ended up violating an enormous fire ant nest. No love lost for them, but I admit I am impressed by the homes they build for the colony. Love watching these videos to see what is cast.
Metal casting is the process of making objects by pouring molten metal into an empty shaped space.

This is definitely one of the more dense crazier ones I’ve seen, and it’s nicely shaped too
it's oddly satisfying to watch you pour molten aluminum onto the ant mound.

I'd love to see you try mounting one the right way up. Maybe drill into it in the center and add a support pole that is hidden by going up the center. Then, I wonder what a sand replica of the top of an ant hill on top of it would look like. Keep it natural looking, like an exhibit of what's underground.

They're everywhere here. I just noticed there's a 4th one in the pic I took of the three.
How do you know how much aluminum to pour?
Mostly a guess based on experience, then add a little extra just in case it's bigger than expected

Fire ants, at least in the US where I live, are considered an invasive species that threaten other native ant species, so I don't feel bad at all. Cool art + exterminating invasive pests is a double win to me
