Keep the commentary! There are great insights that help visualize what's going on. When you mentioned that it was likely not smoke coming from the ant hill, it was likely steam, that helps us visualize what's happening as the aluminum makes its way through the wet soil tunnels.

Having lived in both Florida and Texas, both with fire ants.......... I applaud you. We moved out of the "glorious south" but still have scars on our feet, ankles and legs from fire ants. We gave them the boiling water treatment after we grew tired of spending 50.00 per month on poison. And boiling water is better for the environment.

Once, I accidentally stood on a fire ant hill while waiting on the school bus and I didn't notice anything until I looked down before I got on the bus and notice I was standing in the ant hill. I looked at my shoes and at my pants and I didn't see any ants at all so I thought oh I must be lucky. Man was I wrong those things were literally in my pants leg and in my shoe biting me up I had blisters all over my ankles and feet for days. I was smacking my legs and looking super crazy, until I pulled up my pants leg and showed the bus driver.

Count me as another one that likes the narration. The only problem is the background sound covers your voice. A wireless mic should be your very next gear acquisition. It's not that hard to edit sound, depending on your software. And it will make it so we can hear what you're saying.
    And Merry Christmas!

Would you be so kind as to tell us what number crucible you used in this video? I'd also be appreciative if you'd share with me what tongs you are using (I saw three I think). I am getting started, and I have a #6 crucible. I've done some looking online and have seen tongs for a #4, but not much for #6 crucibles. I really like the idea of a separate set of tongs for lifting verses pouring, and I also like your small set for handling ingots and de-slagging. Thanks for whatever information you'd be willing to share. Also.. great informative video. I didn't know multiple melts/pours would work... I thought maybe the first pour would sort of "block off" the tunnels and keep the second pour from being effective. Good stuff!

I have a #8 crucible but every manufacturer makes their crucibles a bit different so my number 8 is about the same size as a number six actually. The lifting and pouring tong I fabricated myself using flat bar steel and then had a friend weld it for me but you can make a version of it without welds using nuts and bolts. I copied bigstackd design from this video th-cam.com/video/nyp0GiE5FTQ/w-d-xo.html . The other small tong I use is a steel tong I got off Amazon. Yeah I didn’t think multi pours would work either they only completely work like 75% of the time I’ve found though. Thank you for watching and enjoy the hobby!

I really like you explaining what you’re doing. This is pretty far from my life that I love to learn about what you are doing. And the castings are beautiful. Thanks!

I am so glad you decided to put it back together. Don't get me wrong, either way it looks good but as one larger piece, it looks amazing! MERRY CHRISTMAS/HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. 🎅

Good vid, the narration is spot-on. I'm curious about the dynamics of the 2nd pour. Does the first pour go as deep as possible, then subsequent pours pile on top of what's at the bottom? Or does the first pour solidify part way down, and the 2nd pour can re-liquify it & completely fill it down to the bottom AND flatten off the top/base?

So the first pour goes down to the bottom and solidifies, leaving thin hollow aluminum tunnels above it. The second pour goes all the way down filling the hollow parts and hopefully fusing with the first pour. It almost always fuses but where it fuses is the weak point which is why this casting broke in half there.
