- In this video I discuss my thoughts on the Rupert Neve MBT (Master Bus Transformer) after owning and using it for 5 months. Am I still as fond of it as the day I bought it and has the way I am using it now changed over the past 5 months. All of these questions are answered and more.

You right about the MBT. For what I do in my studio, I did returned my MBT and kept the MBP. I tried to love it with my setup but I find myself going back to the MBP. But for the stereo width that’s the magic 😊
Fix up the stereo field editor, keep the saturation, add tape saturation, maybe keep eq
Nice! I have the Neve 542’s and Neve Orbit summing mixer and therefore i can use both Red and Blue silk at the same time. Its pretty awesome! Cheers and great vid with your honest opinion.
Yeah, if you have these two units the MBT just becomes a basic high self EQ, compressor and stereo widener. For me it's all about the silk textures.

I have the mPB and it’s getting used less and less especially since I got the Kiive NFuse plugin so I’ve been thinking about the mBT
I’m really curious about the compressor. I know it’s meant more for color but most people just gloss right over it and say they don’t use it.
Hi Paul. Interesting that you put the MBT at the start. I remember you daid in the past that you start your chain with the Wes ngComp. Can you say where it sits now and why?
The NG bus comp is now in our 3rd studio. We built a fully digital recallable studio. So I've put it in there as the main compressor. This studios more for podcast mastering. I may bring it back in here at some point. I have added so much gear to these racks in this studio that I now I have to be very selective. I really don't want to have to build another rack behind me.
The carnaby Eq I thought would kind of be like a silk blue or red. I’m yet to purchase it though.

They should make a colour box and with deeper stereo width control and a second rendition of their tape analogue emulation.
The current one I am interested in, but becuase I will not have much else in the chain... I'm still trading off with it mind.

So, MBP + 542s?
@@JBrm 542 tape, mbt supersilk, mbp compressor, a width with depth like the mbp in Ms mode. Or just a more indepth supersilk box.
If they release a dual mono color box only, with both red and blue silk (varieable) + the tape emulator, working in MS .. maaan, they will hit the big market !
Add a filter also so you can roll off the low sides whilst adding silk blue to the sides. I'd love a mid band. Like silk green, that would be nice.

Paul, What is better the widener on the SPL Big 500 series or the widener on the Rupert Neve Designed MBT?
Definitely the widener on the MBT. The widener on the big I believe is similar to the Gemini widener. It's quite different to a standard widener like on the MBT. If you are using it in mastering, it will feel like you are adding reverb.
Give us a Silk box to apply to stems for Dolby Atmos mixing :-) Do you use MBT for any atmos mixing or mastering?
100% this would be incredible and probably doable. The MBT is used for stereo mastering only.
Multiband Super Silk would be great!

Hypersilk. Now that's a great name. Logical successor name for it. I do hope neve read these comments. I'd still route my chain as you have it. I'd maybe move the mbt before the 8803. Allow the mbt to achieve a warmth and sparkle and then EQ on top of that.

I’m between this and the MBP. I already have a SSL Hardware comp I use for 2 bus comp. I’m looking for that silk really. Would the MBT be the move? Does one sound bigger than the other?
If silk is what you want go for the MBT. If compression is what you want go for the MBP. I'd recommend the MBT for you as it'll give you an EQ, widener and supersilk to add to your comp. MBP will just give you another compressor and either silk blue or red. Not both.
Great video Paul. Like we have thought. Rupert Designs needs to make a super silk red/blue box and bring the price down and I bet it will sell like hotcakes. I like to see it in a 500 series and maybe couple that with a SPL Big? Your thoughts Paul?
They'd sell so many units if they did this. I'd love a unit that included just what was needed instead of a unit I'm only using 20% of.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio Paul, I sent Rupert Neve Designs an email to the benefit of having a separate Super Silk box. Not sure if they listen to me. Perhaps if many sent emails they may consider it.
Does the analogue equipment work with mastering songs that are mixed in Dolby Atmos?
Yes. Analogue equipment is used to master the binaural mix, which is stereo.
Would it be the same to just get 4 542’s and use one pair with silk red and the other with blue and you’ll also have the tape saturation?
Yes, pretty much. I do find the silk textures sound better on the MBT, but I have not directly compared this. The only issue with 542s is that they are 500 series. I know you can get the half rack version. The ideal unit would be a new and improved 542. Tape super silk and width in a 19" rack. I'd swap the MBT for this.

4 of 542 woud cost like MBT, so why you would do that?
@@vedranc6546I would say to have 2 stereo pairs and have both silk blue and red at the same time plus tape. That’s probably a cheaper way to get those flavors but not ideal. I can get 542 on reverb new for about $700-750

Solid rationale. How do you find the silk saturation in contrast to the Cranborne Carnaby harmonic EQ?
I will have to test this properly when the Carnaby HE2 arrives. This will be on my list to compare. I would imagine it to be quite different.
@@AudioAnimalsStudiolooking forward to seeing that comparison between the HE2 and the MBT. Even though they are different units I think the HE2 could serve a similar purpose and the fact that it has mid/side and an insert 😊could make it that much more appealing
@S7V7N_SEAS it has an insert? Really, surely not like the SSL Fusion. That's news to me if so.

What about the transformers going into the box and out (on the whole mix - the first stage of mastering; you can't bypass them I believe.), without touching anything, do they color (potentially destroy the bass and high's - squezeeing the mix too much) the mix too much or are they subtle enough so you don't say: WTF is that? haha

The Shelford channel would maybe be a better option as you have a pre on it. The mbt is great for processing any source.

@darrylweller6143 in that case the MBT would be the better option and would give you a lot of options to process your guitar bus.
Do you think it’s worth buying an MBT if I’m already using red/blue silk on the 542s, both busses of the summing mixer, pair of Portico II channel strips and the MBP? I can already mix and match the red and blue. Would the MBT really offer anything additional in your opinion?
No not if you owned all of this. You could spend £3300 on something else that would compliment that gear.
I don’t think so. I’m in the same situation. I have the 542’s and I just purchased the mbp and I’m looking at the mbt like there’s no need for me
To have it because I can go blue on the 542 then go red on the mbp. In Mho I think the mbp wins over the mpt
@@jltbk5420 the mbp wins if you want a compressor, much better compressor. The MBT wins if you are more focused on the silk textures.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio I was referring to what if you already own the 542 modules already. I also own the mbp. It would be redundant to grab the mbt wouldn’t it? Because you could go red or blue with either meaning you can go red/blue concurrent so there’d be no need other than the high shelf low shelf and I believe you could achieve that with a much cheaper option in eq. @DragonBiscuit questioned if it would be even worth purchasing mpt if he already owns multiple units that are equipped with red/blue silk
@jltbk5420 if you own an mbp and 542 you don't need a mbt for silk textures. You already have both independently. As I previously said, you'd be better off spending £3300 on something else.
Its strange to have 2 units very expensive with some options that share both in MBP and MBT instead of have one unit for mastering and other for something else. Like you said, I would like to have dedicated units for what is RN most popular , and that is - color of sound. Having "color unit" with "super silk" and "tape emulator 542" would be exelent and probably NO.1 "Color box" unit in the world. Many used 542 for much everything , from tracking to mastering, and is really underrated box, but having combo SUPER SILK + 542 would be great
Let's just hope Neve see how many people are calling for this. Surely, it wouldnt be difficult for them to redo a 19" rack version of the 542 and add super silk plus mid side options. Give us a green silk, which is mid band too. Imagine 3 bands of silk in mid side. That would be powerful.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio was just gonna ask about the gemini for stereo widening and there you are in the video saying the MBT it's much better - how so please?
@scrapethebottom I find the stereo width on the Gemini makes tracks sound like reverb has been added. It can be used for certain things, but for a nice smooth stereo width I use the MBT stereo widener at the start of the chain and the LAAL stereo widener at the end of the chain.

Do you use any RPN summing mixers?
Yeah I’ve got one of their 16x2 summing mixers with red/blue silk on both busses and love it. I’m also using the Dangerous 2Bus+ - they play very well together 😊
Kiive has a new plugin based on this, a shootout would be cool!

How does the width feature compare to the SPL BIG ?
I much prefer the width on the MBT to the SPL big.

What other stereo widening could you recommend at a small, medium and large pricepoint?
The Hum Audio LAAL has an incredible stereo widener on it. You can also use a good EQ in mid side stereo width. This for me is often preferred over a stereo width unit. The MBT stereo width is good though.

That’s when you know your studio is loaded with elite units. 😅
Haha I speak purely from a mastering perspective. When you put it up against dedicated mastering compressors like the SPL iron, unfairchild 670m mk2 and elysia alpha compressor it makes sense.
I made one comment on MBT and RND reply me (which is not in common for them as I can see over years) so I will share here....
Vedran: "I think all Silk devices shoud adopt super silk from MBT. It would be great but wanna remind that BLUE SILK have main benefit up to 55 hz, and RED taking from that freq point and take all the way to 20k and beyond, so if you do music with "Low cut 60hz" you dont need BLUE ...... RND reply: "Thanks for your feedback. We always working on new gear so SUPER SILK may make additional appearences in the future. And you are right that "silk blue" enhances harmonics in low and sub frequencies, but it also emphasizes frequencies well beyond 55HZ and into the low mids, and can still be very audible and helpfull when using a high pass fifter - even one set above 60hz . Sometimes its a combo of 2 (Silk blue + HPF) that give you exactly you are looking for."
@vedranc6546 Yeah, you've only got to look at what it is doing in plugin doctor to see the frequency range of silk blue goes much further than 55hz. Silk red also extends much lower in the high mids. Silk blue has huge benefits even if you are low cutting a sound.
how does this compare to the neve shelford?
The Shelford in my opinion has a better EQ, better compressor but that's down to taste. Also has a mic pre so if you are recording that's an added bonus. The only benefit of the MBT is the width and using super silk to use both silk red and blue at the same time. It really depends what you need. For me this units all about the silk textures.
ok thanks man, i was mainly going to use them for tracking vocals, maybe guitar . i was alwasys trying to know the difference and from what i studied, one major difference is the PREAMP on the shelford. coming from a 73 i heard. also do you know what the last product rupert neve produced into the public before he passed in 2021?was in the shelford or mbt?@@AudioAnimalsStudio
another question is how would you it would add to the sound if i add a carnaby 500 eq ?
@rickythethird yes if you are recording 100% go with the Shelford. The MBT is more designed for your mix bus to polish the mix before mastering. It's not a unit I would buy for tracking purposes. Saying that it would work well for recording with other units.
I would imagine the MBT was build and designed after Ruperts passing. Not sure he'd have signed off on the MBT.
@rickythethird the Carnaby 500 is great. I had one in for a couple of weeks and loved it. Just didn't like that it was 500 series. I want all 19" racks. They have the Carnaby HE2 coming next month, which is what I'm getting.

I wouldn't advise adding 500 series to your mastering chain.

You replaced the MBP for an MBT?! You’re insane. I have silk blue and silk red readily available with different RND pieces. But even if I didn’t, I’d never trade the MBP.
MBT is a posthumous piece. And don’t believe Rupert would have authorized it. It has none of the sophistication and elegance of Rupert Neve’s designs. MBT is a cheap facsimile if the SSL Fusion. And the SSL Fusion is hideous.
I covet the MBP. My favorite piece of gear in my mastering studio.
And you probably enjoy using the compressor on the MBP. I find it's an OK compressor. Nothing special and doesn't get a look in against the Elysia Alpha, unfairchild, Shadow Hills and SPL Iron. I'm sure if you had these compressor at your disposal when mastering you'd feel the same. I'd certainly call you insane if you were choosing a MBP over these 4 compressors. But that's the difference here. For me the MBP is the budget compressor that can't compete with the big boys.
The MBT however for me is just a silk box as mentioned in the video. I'd be insane to fill my rack with two RND units just for silk. When I can just use one unit for that purpose.
When you directly compare silk capabilities of the MBP vs the MBT. You are insane if you think the MBP would win. I'd laugh you out my studio if you came up saying that. The MBP has the posibity of using one silk texture at a time. The MBT has 2 silk textures at a time. I think you're insane to think 1 silk texture is better than 2.
The insanity in this comment to think the standard silk is better than super silk does make me think you didn't listen to the key part of the video where I said the only thing the MBT is used for is width and super silk. I get the feeling you heard that I swapped the MBP for the MBT and it instantly triggered you.
