  • Many years ago I created a video that unintentionally created a lot of controversy. The video gave a tour of our electric guitar position at the church, but in the video I mentioned that our guitar players had to use our gear. Fast-forward four years, and Jimmy Cooper from Hey Worship Leader created a video reacting to my original video, both from the perspective of a worship leader but also the perspective of a guitar player. So I thought it would be fun to create a reaction video to his reaction video of my electric guitar video. A reaction inception, if you will.
    This is the original video that started it all:
    • A tour of our church e...
    And here's Jimmy's recent reaction video:
    • Worship Leader Reacts ...
    Jimmy is a good friend of mine, and his channel Hey Worship Leader is definitely one you should be subscribed to. Check it out here:

    I watched HML's reaction to your original video. I watched your original video. And now I'm watching this one.
    My guitar rig is ridiculous and comes with a price tag to match--not surprising, I've been playing for 30+ years.
    I don't own a Helix or any modeler,, but if I could make a recommendation, buy 2 Line 6 Helixs/ Kempers /Fractal Audios.
    This would allow people to upload their own patches and controls from home. If they don't own one, and you own 2, one can borrow one for the week and bring it back Sunday morning and upload his/ her presets.

    As a younger guitarist, I didn’t get it. As a worship leader, I get it. You would get negativity, no matter what was provided. Speaking a little on that, the people with the heart to partner with the ministerial vision will be willing to be flexible. The people who lead with negativity are probably not who you are looking for.

    So I got to play lead guitar at Dave's church once (so far). He offered to let me use the Dr. Z, but I stuck with my modeler. Partly because I wasn't familiar with the Dr. Z, and partly because I was afraid I'd fall in love with the Dr. Z and then want something I couldn't afford. Ha! But if Dave or his sound guy had said, "Hey, your modeler just isn't giving us the sound we're looking for." I would have been happy to switch to their gear. Because I'm not there to put my creativity into it. I'm not there to "make it my own". I'm there to serve a role and to provide the sounds and parts that the congregation is used to hearing - that way I'm not drawing attention away from the worship and to myself. So knowing that they are doing their best to provide quality gear that gives them the sound that their mix is set for, I would have played any of their gear that they provided, from pick to speaker, had they asked. (And no, Dave's not a tyrant - but he does know what sounds right, and his sound guys are very well trained and have a passion for what they do!)

    Dave, I love the meta-ness of this video. When I watched the original video during a channel binge, I couldn't help but be reminded (as a bass player and FOH guy) of the oft-observed behaviour that guitarists "are" the band and that everyone else is there to support them. If we are serving only on our terms, is that really service?
    Check your heart and your stage volume :)

    Hi Dave I agree with you pedalboard idea. It’s very smart. A really good noise gate might be a good investment and open the door for guitarists to bring their personal board.

  • @dkijc
    @dkijc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a praise team member, leader and a guitarist, I DO understand from both perspective. That GAS is real. haha.
    However... the creativity part? I don't completely agree on. I think creativity comes from the limitations.
    It's unfortunate that we, as church guitarists, rely SOOOO much on effects. I get that effects does open more doors and freedom to play and imitate 'modern' Christian music sounds. Let's all take that as a challenge and create something new! This is reminding me again... We are to be worshippers of God and not worshippers of gear.
    Thank you for reacting to the video and being a good sport about it!
    With that. Let us praise our Father with gladness and joy! God bless my basic!

    I’ve watched all three of the videos around the first one. I get the idea and it makes sense, however, I am a pedal connoisseur and would have a very difficult time agreeing to this.
    With that being said, I would recommend checking out the new Line 6 HX Effects. I own one and use it a lot at my church. It would cover everything this board is doing for you and sounds great. You should also check out the HX Stomp mixed in for the amp and have a silent stage and plug directly into the board. So much has come out in the last couple of years.
    I do have to say, when I started out, this would’ve been nice back in the day.
    Great series of videos brother.
    God bless.

    I would be totally cool with it. Us guitar players obsess over every nuance of "Our Tone," never taking into consideration that every room sounds different. The thing is, nobody is there to hear Your Tone. As long as it sounds decent, and it's not distracting, it's fine. I do have a question about that MIDI input. Are you able to change patches and/or banks with it? Seems like you could automate some foot clicks along with getting that bpm from the MIDI/Ableton.

    I'm not mad at the idea but if you sold your drums how did you practice at home?

    Life is about choice. even for churches, human beings have to make choices. You have built a very reasonable and appealing option for any person wanting to participate as a guitar player in worship.
    There are many frustrations for every guitar player who has all their own gear. we cannot ignore the flipside of this alternative that you have built. I have to lug all of my gear back-and-forth to practice and worship if I own my own. I practice at home and build presets and make things sound great and then I have to lug it to a different location and tweak it every single time. Things about ny space at church have to be very oriented to me and it's very difficult for other people to share my space when I'm not there. This is such a fantastic idea but make no mistake, it's extremely new and difficult for a lot of people to accept. Anyone who would serve regularly would get used to the rig and would be glad that it's available. I started by saying life is choice and at the end of the day it is the leader's choice, but I would just like to say that this choice speaks very highly of community and humility and I think it's a very good option to consider.
    Finally, regarding creativity, not having to think about all of those other technical details does have a very liberating effect on your creativity with the guitar. Anything the worship leader can do to help those worshiping leave their cares outside and come worship is a bonus. Anyone taking this approach also should follow your example of doing it wholeheartedly, because the worst thing someone could do is take this approach and do it poorly.

    The drummer perspective totally makes sense! But I think the analogy of a drummer bringing sticks is not "1 to 1" with that of a guitarist bringing just their guitar. I think the guitarist bringing just a guitar to plug into the house board and amp is like a drummer bringing sticks to play on the house electronic kit. Yes, it has the sounds, but the feel is totally different. There's a whole mental roadblock for most when they see plastic and rubber. There wouldn't be as much pushback if the church sprung for a $5k Roland V kit, but that pedalboard was closer to an $800 Alesis. Just my $.02.

      That said, I would totally serve for a church that cared enough to invest in their volunteers. I would probably get to know the WL well enough where we could have conversations regarding gear, but that's secondary to serving. What's harsh to my ears might be what this church needs to sit in their mix. I'd definitely go buddy-buddy with the sound person asap and ask about mix and eq and if they would mind me making adjustments though. Mix dude supercedes WL's preferences imo. *wink*

      At the end of the day, you're exactly right. It's all about relationships. None of these statements about "hey, you play our pedalboard" are made in a vacuum. They're made in the context of group of people that do life together and have each other's backs and wants to do everything to serve one another.

    Watching this video helped me learn something learn. I think forcing people to play a specific board requires that board to be of use. That board was sad, and complex in a way that breeds more confusion than anything else. I do believe if you’re going to force players to be strapped to your equipment it’s gotta be top notch. 5 years ago means that gear is dated, but still. Great concept I don’t disagree with the heart, I disagree with the gear choices lol, but I say that without knowing your churches budget.

  • @the-LeoKnightus
    @the-LeoKnightus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What a funny situation. I think it's cool that a church decided on a course of action and just did it 'all the way'. I, personally disagree strongly with making a guitar player play a different board on Sunday than they practice their parts at home with. I would not do it.
    When you select or hire a guitar player, you are selecting someone based on their playing, their gear, and how they use it. Now, granted if you find a guy or gal who really can play and the church's backline is better than what they personally own, then perfect.
    As for me, I will handle my own delay tempo and so forth, on my own board thank you.

    Heart attitude trumps gear every time and Dave’s heart is readily apparent. Also... as a volunteer FOH audio engineer, I am very glad I don’t have to provide my own console!! I will gladly learn the console provided.

    I saw that video years ago and I wasn’t really feeling it. The most consistent player is consistent on his/her own gear. But I do get the idea behind it. But even with that board and every single player used it, it would never be consistent unless you removed the knobs and didn’t allow anyone to touch anything on the board and the same guitar was used. Even with that, no player really sounds like another player.

  • @roblayton8862
    @roblayton8862 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, a few thoughts.
    1. I think it's awesome that you provide equipment for those who don't have there own or maybe don't have gear of that quality. That said these are hardly top of the line pedals. It's a very dated board so why hold back players who are willing and able to invest their own money in better equipment?
    2. Trust your guitarists. We want to sound our best so if something is happening with what you said like a noisy pedal or guitar... we want to fix it too. Telling Frank that he doesn't get to use his board because Bob's board had a few issues he needs to work on means that Frank and Bob are both tools, not jewels.
    As a touring guitarist there are many times that I've used back line amps for the consistency reasons you're talking about but I've never, in the secular or church scenes, been told I can't use my own board.
    3. Provide instruction and resources. With the move to LED stage lighting its more likely that the culprit of the noise you mentioned is something in the power than it is the lights, making sure that guitarists have clean, filtered, isolated power onstage just like they do at home. Offer times for guitarists to come in and work with you and the sound engineer to sleuth out and mitigate any noise issues. One time I was having an issue with my board being noisy, we couldn't figure it out. I didn't have that issue at either of our churches other campuses, just the one. So the sound engineer and I met before rehearsal one afternoon and went through my gear front to back until we found the issue and the issue was.... I was running direct to the PA from a cab simulator and he was forgetting to turn off Phantom power on those channels. But we figured that out because he valued me enough to try to help find a solution.
    Conversely, if you are going to stay this course, update the gear. Sell the dated board, the amps, all of it and get a Helix. This will provide the technical consistency you talked about while still allowing individual guitarists to craft their own sound within the teams sound. Some people prefer a fender amp to a Vox, prefer a Klon style overdrive to a Blues breaker. Allowing this individuality shows your value in the individual.
