This dude was a prime example of fingers being tone. His tone was actually quite gnarly and disgusting almost unplayable to a modern player. His control and how he utilized the immense gain was purely in the hands. Actually quite amazing.
I've always argued this with people... The tone was terrible by all accounts... Harsh... Aggressive. Grating... Whatever... But... In his hands... It worked so well.
He was a master at keeping the unplayed notes muted. It's so hard to play with gain like that. Nowadays, all these you tube guitarists, who think they're better than Dime, are playing with amp sims and modelers. They can adjust the gate so well that they can do no muting at all and still sound great. In real life, with a setup like Dime's, they wouldn't be able to play anything. All you'd hear is loose notes, causing feedback, and it would be a big muddy mess. You only get that good by having as much stage experience as him, with real gear, that actually moves air. It's like riding a bull versus playing a video game, where you ride a bull.
He signed my CD inserts when I was a working as a bellman in a New Orleans hotel many moons ago. I heard He, Vinnie and Rex were in town to meet up with Phil to go over some tracks they recorded in Texas so I took the graveyard shift after my 2nd shift ended just so I could try and meet up with him. At about 3am he came through the lobby doors, barely awake, with a girlfriend. I grabbed my CDs and Sharpie and started off in his direction from the front desk. As I got closer, I could see the overwhelming fatigue on his face as we made eye contact. It was so beyond obvious that he wanted to just go straight to bed so I veered off and passed by without stopping but he had already seen the Sharpie and CDs in my hand. To this day I could have sworn reading a glimpse of appreciation in his eye for me choosing to leave him alone but after they passed, I heard his girlfriend say "Did you see his name?" [Daryl] I heard him call out, "Yo [daryl], c'mere bro". I hurdled two sofas getting to him, tripping over the last one and landed on my face and dropping all of my CDs and Sharpie. I quickly righted myself in front of him at which point I got a full realization of my 4-5" of vertical advantage over him. I managed to stammer out something along the lines of "Thank you so much, I know you're tired as hell, I wasn't going to ask.. " as I handed him the marker and CDs. And I'll never forget this.. he said "Take them out of the cases.. I'm not signing plastic". (Duh.. stupid.. gah, what was i thinking?). As he finished the last autograph, he said "You spell your name wrong.. you should fix that". I agreed, laughing, and thanked him for all the help Pantera gave me through some really dark shit I had just gone through. His girlfriend seemed really kind as was he. Just that short interaction I had with him showed me what a great human he was in addition to being talented beyond comprehension. We all miss you Dime. I am so happy I stumbled across this. Nobody could make the guitar scream like Dimebag. He had his own sound and I love it!!
Finally it’s back!!!!!!! This video got taken down a while ago and I was so sad but now I can feel whole again
Theres legit shredders who I watch and am fully motivated to begin to climb the mountain of mimicking but as soon as I see Dime's legato, it's like, "ah ok, nah that's some shit my body simply will not do"
Not true, my good man! If you have the heart to put in what it takes, you CAN!
This is not some PE teacher BS. The best players took that guitar everywhere they went, because no matter what they were doing, they really wanted to be doing guitar. You hear stories like this about Dimebag, Allen Collins, EVH and all the other greats.
I wish I’d learned this lesson earlier in my life.
@@smith981 well said mate.
@@smith981 cliff burton and Kirk Hammett also
You should listen Chris Poland his legato is crazy compared to dimes
@@jacobgarcia2660 Poland's my fucking hero. Love that shit.
Getcha pull! RIP Abbott brothers.
Get yer pull🤘🏻🤘🏻
20 years of missing you💯
Everytime I see a dimebag vid..I just forget about all the dudes around today that are talented.. man. He was so fucking amazing man. Definitely the best NOTES!
There should be no argument, Dimebag was THE BEST…..IS THE BEST….a gift taken away far too soon, but we can find solace in what he left behind, the most imaginative, influential to 10th degree just sick phenomenal guitar playing
im watching this in my bed and literally clapped from joy at 1:50. What a talent...
Ahh, I remember watching these videos a good 10 - 15 years ago when I was learning to play, I was obsessed with dimebag and his techniques. R.I.P
dude this is great. thx for posting it
I could listen to him talk and play all day man. What a legend 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Why would anyone dislike this video. It's literally god shredding on the geetar
This was before great guitarists charged anyone to learn their techniques. Miss these days.
Snooty Jazz players
The type that booed another Texas Cyclone of a guitar player at a Famous Jazz festival
His name was
Stevie Ray Vaughan
absolute legend, what an inspiration
He still is🇺🇸 the best
this is really cool to see something so rare
Thanks for posting this
you're welcome!
I have learned how to squeal by rewinding this video a million times. I still come back just to hear some dime jive.
He is and was the man, myth and legend miss your axe thrashing metal. R.I.P. DIMEBAG
Liked and subbed. Commented just for the algorithm. Everyone below me has already said it all. Nothing left to say about this man

i never get tired of listening to his squeals, there’s no other like him! I liken him to being a legendary dragon rider who commanded the beast to scream anytime he wanted! Sad feelings now......
Miss this guy never had the privilege to meet him but I miss this fuckin beast..RIP DIMEBAG
Great post!! I was telling a buddy of mine about couple months back had had been unable to find it, then today the algorithm brings it up!, Great peice of footage!
I have not seen this in years! I had it saved when it first came out and then it was removed. Very cool to see it again! Thanks for sharing
"Getcha a pull off that shit"..... hell yeah man
Thanks for the incredible lesson ,Mr Abbott❤ may you and Vinny Paul rest in peace.
One of my favorite things to do when I jam is hit that 2nd fret Dime squall been practicing it for a year now it gets easier but nobody made it look as easy as Dime, I do it also in honor of him it's like it'd be a shameful thing as a musician to not carry on his jams, Miss him so much his music is one of the biggest inspirations that made me wanna always play better, faster & harder, RIP Getcha Pull 333 Make That MFr Sing Son🤘
He use whammy pedal
@@hasahchan4775 Allot of times yes cause it gives you way more sustain but he could do it without using Wah or Whammy Pedal but I don't care Wah or not that stuff is hard to do it takes lots of practice & it takes finesse ya gotta barely touch the string in a specific place after flicking it with your noting hand you never pluck the string to get an Authentic Dime Squall & your picking hand needs to be on the Whammy bar using it like he did & Steve Vai does Backwards to where your picking hand isn't over top your strings, I don't have a Wah need one though but I hit them Dime Squalls all over top your even # frets makes the highest pitch I've been doing it for a year now it takes many hours of practice, I use a Jackson FR7 String with a Double Locking Floyd Rose 1000 Series & Fishman Modern Pickups & no Wah I can get it to ring out pretty good with dead strings but fresh new ones I really can ring her out them Fishmans are amazing nothing compares I need to get a Wah it would ring out all day with that extra sustain🤘
"Get you a pull off that shit"
magnificent
Rest in peace brother, you'll forever be missed
Dime is and was the best, another level, a gift that eases everything for a few minutes of yeeeahhh!!!! Gaaaad daaaammmm!!!!. No worries, just joy in hearing and feeling the best their ever was.
He was literally the most down to earth guy you’d never know he was such a monster with a guitar
That ones gonna cost ya right there 🤘🏽 ❤️
I learned how to squeal from this video back in like 08 .. Once you have the tap after the dive and flick down its all gravy .. Rest easy Dime thanks for all the lessons.
