Knitting Help - Slow Motion Knitted Cast-On

- In this video I demonstrate the knitted CO, a standard cast-on, in slow-motion.

This is how my mother taught me to cast on over 50 years ago. I knitted a lot in my “youth,” but life got in the way, and I didn’t knit again for over 30 years. A couple of years ago (now long retired and with a grandbaby) I decided it was time to get back into knitting. Thank goodness for vloggers like Staci! I had forgotten-and didn’t know-so much! I certainly remembered this cast on (it was the only one I knew), but in exploring knitting videos was completely boggled by all the other methods. There were many videos for other ways (especially long tail, which I really find cumbersome), but was baffled that no one seemed to be using “my” method. I didn’t even know it had a name.
I do have a tip to add to this great video. Instead of using the tip of your left needle, make your stitches lower on your needle (yes, you’ll have to pull more yarn length through with your right needle) and you can snug it up without removing your right needle from the newly created stitch on your left needle. There is much less movement, it goes much quicker, and helps prevent you from snugging up the cast on stitch too tightly.
This is also the way I cast on and I have been knitting on and off since I was 12 (now70). I do not take the needle out of the stitch when I finish each one so it is in place for the next one. Taking it out of the stitch may be (for her) the best way to show others how it is done because you do have to put the needle back in for the next stitch anyway which does stretch it.
Love your slow motion videos. I like this cast on stitch because I don't have to figure out how much yarn I need for the long tail cast on. I know that it takes a little more time, but I feel that it is worth it.
Great CO to add to the long tail I've used for 50 years. Thanks! This is great to CO a lot of stitches when it's hard to know how much trail is needed. Also great for adding stitches at a neck or armhole.

After you CO all the stitches for your project using the knitted-on technique, be sure to check that none of your stitches are twisted on the needle before you start knitting the first row of your pattern. I failed to do this when I began working on my Half+Half Triangles Wrap, so there's a short twisted area on the cast-on edge. That wrap is huge, so the twist is not that noticeable, but I don't want it to happen again.

OMG I've been doing this cast on wrong! For years! 🙄 even so the way I've been doing it. It makes a wonderful cast on.
Do you have a video comparing what different cast ons look like next to each other? I'm curious how they compare. I suppose I should stop being lazy, and knit my own swatches for reference. But if you already have one out there, why reinvent the wheel?

That is how I first learned to cast on, then many years later I earned the long tail and have used it most of the time since.

Is there a purl version of this stitch?
I was taught the same except you put the needle behind the stitch, knit and put it back on the needle.
They don’t make that yarn any more. How to find substitution and know how bulky of yarn to buy?
I want to make a watermelon potholder with the weaving loom made by me craft kit. I want it to have seeds, but actually looks like a watermelon. How would I do this?
If you're working from a kit, I would contact the designer for advice.
When a pattern asks for this cast on but says 'do not twist'...what does that mean?
That is instructions you see when you're casting on in-the-round. You want to make sure that the cast-on isn't twisted on the cord when you join it into a circle.
Transfer it to the right* needle (to me and other left handed folks)
Is the next row a wrong side or right side row?
It can be either...your pattern will explain that.

I too have been watching your podcasts and also listening to them sometimes through just an audio provider. I have a question that I can’t seem to get anyone to be able to answer. Anybody watching this podcast could answer as well. Let’s say I am needing some thing that’s two colors. I’ve met in my primary color for a couple of rows. Now I want to change my color but when I’m net I want to know if there’s a way to get rid of that pesky line that you see on the wrong side. Thank you and everybody for your podcasts. We hope we can keep you going like you are keeping us going.
If you're working in stockinette stitch, that "muddy" color break on the wrong side of the work is just the nature of knitting. One way around that, if you're working on say, a scarf, for example - knit it in the round, so that there is no wrong side showing. You'll have a clean color break on both sides, and a double-thick scarf.

Thank you for your response. That is what I do when I’m making a infinity scarf or a neck scarf. I just was wondering because I have made some Shaws and I tried to do my own thing but I don’t know how to get that line out.
