    Had a friend show me how to do this in person and then IMMEDIATELY lost the ability to do it when I was alone. I must have watched 8 videos before this one trying to get it back and was so frustrated, but your steady pace and the "swivel and scoop" description made sense almost right away! Thank you so much! ❤️

      Same!! I've watched 4 and hers was the one that I finally got it! Other videos were too fast (and even slowing down the playback speed didn't help) and didn't show every step (like their hands would be in the way of the camera etc). Marly's videos are so helpful:)

    Very enlightening! I've been knitting for nearly 40 years (with hiatuses), but feel like a newbie watching this - I've always used long tail cast on, until recently I didn't even know other ways exist!

    This video is the 4th one I've watched trying to do knit cast on and it is the only one that was easy to follow and see every step:) I loved how you did a few cast on stitches to make sure we got it. Thank you!♡♡♡

    Hello Marly. Discovering all your TH-cam videos. I subscribed, you are SO good! The way I was taught was after the wrap just scoop the stitch on the right needle over an onto the left needle. I've tried both ways and I notice your way the stitches are smaller and tighter, my way they are larger and looser.

    Thank you for this tutorial. Usually I do the long tail but it usually takes me three tries - not enough yarn to finish the cast on, or too much yarn left after cast on. I need to cast on 150-200 cast ons so this cast on is perfect. Again, thank you for your tutorial. Barbara

    I have been trying to crochet all summer and I have hit a frustration point with it. I am going to take a break from that and give knitting a try. This looks like you have more control of your yarn and keeping your rows straight. We'll see how it goes. This looks like a good place to start.

    THANK YOU so much for this! I'm a self-taught knitter so I have had to learn everything by trial and error. The long tail cast-on always frustrated me because either I wasted so much yarn or I didn't calculate correctly and had to start over. NEVER AGAIN! THANK YOU!

    • @Sandra-yx6yp
      @Sandra-yx6yp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Catherine E. Lewis no don’t waste yarn, it’s super easy to judge. For each cast on stitch you want to make, wrap the yarn around the knitting needle. Example, if you want to make 10 cast on stitches, wrap the yarn around the needle 10 times. It’s easy. I personally don’t like this cast on at all. Long tail is the way to go or twisted German

    I tell you since watching videos I've learned I have knitted wrong for over 40 years. I wasn't taught to swivel the left needle and scoop ( you pull it up and plunk it on the left needle), I was also taught knit is counter clockwise and purl was clockwise. Is this known as any certain style Marly Bird???

  • @roseanngamma813
    @roseanngamma813 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you cast on this way, do you consider that as your first row of knitting? Or do you just start out your first row of knitting after the cast on?

    • @strangeaslife
      @strangeaslife 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say follow the pattern you are using and if it doesn't specify a style of cast-on stitch then I would consider whatever style cast-on you chose to use as your cast-on row only and not the 1st row of knitting, so you'd start your first row of knitting after casting-on. In my experience this should always be the case - cast-on first, then knit.

    • @eringovoni4416

      MaryEllen Jackson it sounds like maybe your casting on with one and then knitting with the other? Tie something to your tail after casting on so you don’t get them mixed up.

    Find "some way" to maintain tension??! How to hold your yarn is important. I have ended up using the continental method because after crocheting for 50+ years, this is the way I maintain tension.
