  • In this video I demonstrate the "slingshot" method for working the long-tail cast-on.
You can see my other slow-motion videos here: • Slow-Motion Techniques
Here is another way to work the long-tail CO: • Knitting Help - Slow-M...

The shawl on the mannequin is Autumn Crunch by Vanessa Ewing, a pattern exclusively for Brioche Tier patrons of the VeryPink Knits Podcast (an audio production). More information here:

The needles I used are Knitter's Pride bamboo DPNs, and the yarn is Paintbox Yarns Chunky.

After 53 years of knitting, I didn't realize this had a name other than long tail cast on. LOL! Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Thanks a bunch. Have a great day

watched 4 other videos for slingshot and BOOM yours clicked instantly - one single motion with thumb and forefinger on left hand lifts both working end and tail, BOOM, again, and done… brilliant. tyvm!

Love your nails, Staci! I learned the sling shot cast on when I was 10. I do use this one when I don't feel like the extra motions of the German Twisted Cast On. I rarely use the other Long Tail Cast On, I like added interest in the foundation so to speak. That's the beauty of knitting and crochet something for everyone!

Your videos are great but recently found your podcasts by chance. They are great nuggets of advise and tips too.

Thank you! I've looked at several tutorials for this stitch but nothing was working for me and your tutorial had me doing the stitches the right try!

That's a good cast-on to learn. For me it's very quick and professional. 👍

I went and watched the other way you do it, I have to try it, but it does look like the tension would be able to be kept more consistent. Thanks for sharing!

I am just starting to learn knitting. As a crocheter, I find knitting a little harder, but am determined to learn.

As a crocheter, you will find continental knitting much easier. Holding yarn in left hand eliminates one thing you don’t have to do differently.

Like so many have commented here, I never knew what this was called.. .
I've since become addicted to the German twisted cast on and now I use up for everything. 😉

Just as I do. But I heard there is a way of casting on in which we can cast on a stitch as purl and another as knit and in this way you will be ready for the rib.

This is also the way I learned to cast on over 60 years ago, and the way I teach others to cast on. Didn’t realize it was different from the ‘long tail’ cast on.
I’m guessing, Staci, that the cast on you reference is the one with yarn placed over the needle and then a loop wrapped around it. Am I correct? I was shown that method by students, and knew it was just another version of what I was doing. I never realized my cast on had a different name, although I always tell students to hold the needle so that it makes a slingshot!!!
My philosophy about knitting is that, no matter what you call things or how you do it, if it comes out looking like knitting, it is just another way to do it.

How do you know how long to have your tail? For instance, I need to cast on 236 stitches with a size 7 needle. I have no idea how long a tail I need to have for this cast on method. Do you have any advice?
