A lot of people didn't get it because video gamers were mostly 12 to 15-year-olds at the time, Even at my age it is still hard to wrap my head around this story, and the MGS story as a whole.
Damn, more than a decade later and still relevant. Expert storytelling. The panama papers, one source of uncontrolled information. I can guarantee the [patriots] didn't want that publicized.
Even the child soldier phenomena is still relavent, as well as the deconstruction of killing in general, even if it is for the good of all, and especially if one is forced to do so (the dead have names you know)

I played this game when it first came out. The chills it gives me today are actually *STRONGER* than the chills it gave me 20 years ago. This game was basically prophetic for its time
"The overall system isn't complete. It still lacks the necessary factors for judging situations. I heard they were planning a major experiment in the next few days to provide complex data for GW to study, and suddenly all this happens." That is the most chill inducing thing to listen to after beating the game.
Because the game IS the experiment. More specifically, the events of the game are controlled variables added by the Patriots to test whether they could manipulate an individual to reach a certain outcome.
When Emma says "and suddenly all this happens," it's the game's way of subtly alluding to the fact that the experiment is already being carried out and you're the test subject, but that probably won't occur to anyone who hasn't beaten the game (when the Colonel AI reveals the truth in the very last codec conversation).
I was too young to fully grasp what was happening in MGS2 when I first played it. But now that I see it again, it's very impressive. Why do so many people say MGS2 sucks? *Is it their own "truth" conjured up in their pond?*
Same with me. I played this as a kid too and back then I didn't like this game. But as I grew older and began to understand things from more abstract and surreal perspectives, I got that this game is a clever way for kojima to directly tell us about where human society is heading.
They mostly say it because of Raiden. The story itself is very layered and deep, but they flat out lied about who you would be playing as, even did palette swaps for the trailers to make it look like you were playing as snake in the scenes you were playing as raiden.
0:58 talks about the space defense, tax reductions & national missle defense in Nov 13, 2001. Even talks about a "Trump Card" LoL I love MGS. Especially the 1st one.
"Everyone withdraws into a small gated community afraid of a larger forum. They stay inside their little ponds leaking whatever truth suits them to the growing cesspool of society at large"- so basically internet trolls and keyboard warriors in a nutshell
It was this game that really opened my eyes to the greater evil running this country. I always had some idea that there had to be some clandestine group really in control. Crazy good, seemed pretty convoluted at certain points, but the game goes deep.
Except the game's ending itself makes it clear that there is no clandestine group controlling our country, but rather our country is controlled by its culture and systems. The founding fathers created the rules of our country, and those rules continue to shape us just as we shape them. The election system and political culture of our country decide who will be president, elections are merely a method of asking our systems and culture who they choose to fill that role. What is passed by congress is not chosen by individual members of congress nor by the people of the united states, but by the rules of congress and the culture of those within its chambers. You accepted the convenient half truths the game gave you, and not wanting to accept facts that contradict what you already believe, you ignored what you were later presented.
Actually I always felt the "la le Lou lei lo" was a reference to what Emma mentioned to Raiden, about how much information could be suppressed if there were originally 5 more letters in the alphabet than we currently have. Well, "la le lou lei lo" would constitute that, as it's essentially all the standard English vowels with the addition of an "L". With that there could essentially be another language within our language decipherable using "lalelouleilo" as a code/decode key, a kind of "crypto linguistics".... I wanted to see Kohima do more with this concept, but as far as I know he seemed to drop it. Imagine entire chapters worth of material from well known books like Moby Dick or The Bible that suddenly come into existence with the addition of "laleluleilo", or the same text but with an entirely new & different meaning to it once the codec is applied. ....Spooky stuff.
Idk why I always remember these lines: 8:50 "The connecting elevator is located on the B2 Floor of the Shell 1 Core." 9:30 "So now, Anti-Metal Gears are guarding a Metal Gear!?"
"It's not your fault Emma...I mean, if it wasn't for the terrorists." Something about the phrase "if it wasn't for the terrorists" is fucking hilarious to me
as is the proliferation of child soldiers and why excess murder can cause ptsd (snake suffers from this so much that by mgs4, a 100% stress level will cause him to vomit)
I don't think so. It can easily be rounded up as some conspiracy shit and that'd be the end of it. And it doesn't have the influence some singer or whatever would have on the masses so there's no need to "control" him or what he writes for the games he works on. There's no reason to separate from him as well. It isn't like it's a news company or anything. Actually, those all tend to be owned and controlled by the same groups or persons. Mass media, I mean. Their reports are written in advance by some company who has interests in lies and propaganda, and several (even dozens) different news reports will tell the same thing in the same way, sometimes even word for word (“This is extremely dangerous to our democracy.”).
those AI's are ruthlessly rational there are no irrational feelings or emotions in them. logically i agree with everything they said but they leave no room for individuality/irrational human will. they have tried to change the chaotic nature of the world to a more unified world by trying to control the irrational individual will but despite the nobility of their goal they have failed at the end as told by big boss in MGS4 to solid at the end " for all our advances in nanotechnology , information and genetic control they have never managed to control people at will let alone turn one person totally to another"
otacon left because he blamed himself for his fathers death because his mom seduced him his father found out and killed himself after that he left because he dishonored himself
I really don't remember the part with the President admitting he was working with the terrorists for absolute power. Very weird, I must have finished this game over a hundred times too. I remember everything else. Which version is this taken from?
this game was and still is ahead of its time.
+abdulqudz89 I know if it came out today it still would be very impressive
Jesus Requena these codec conversations are still relevant. So, yes, MGS2 was ahead of it's time.

Because the game IS the experiment. More specifically, the events of the game are controlled variables added by the Patriots to test whether they could manipulate an individual to reach a certain outcome.
