@Arian Quentin i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I was fortunate to know Roy Rogers as a fellow (though young) musician in the 1970s - 80s. To answer someone's previous hat question -- Roy's hats came from the 'Resistol' hat company. Since I was always impressed by some of the finest cowboy hats I had seen, I asked Mr. Rogers once about his hat. Turns out the hats that impressed me were not Stetsons, as I had thought, but "Resistol" hats. He told me a story about the Resistol company: Resistol is (was?) the first and only felt hat maker to manufacture their hats while owning & overseeing the entire process -- from felt production to boxing the hat for shipment. He said the company moved to Garland, Texas in the late 1930s. I believe they are still there? Most of Roy's hats were a model that cost about $380 at that time (1981). He told me "actor John Wayne favored Resistol hats". That's all I know about his hats.
God bless Roy Rogers. That was the best hat instructional video I've ever seen in my life...for a DIY What a patient thorough man he just has very easy going demeanor, kind Spirit about him almost makes you feel like you've known him forever or he's family or something most people don't have all of these high-tech little Western tools to shape your cowboy hat I mean I totally learned from this video more of the different things that you can use from just around the house that a person would have at your beckons call Unless it's like your hobby or your a hat shaper by profession you can spend some big old bucks and all that shaping stuff to get a proper look like Mister Rogers just accomplished I had figured some of the stuff out kind of felt silly about it ...BUT I will NEVER feel silly about it again... I mean heck ROY ROGERS I just learned from the best! that ever was or ever probably will be ,cool* thank you for posting this video. True American Icon Hero!

Roy blocking a hat!?! What an unexpected thing! Roy has been my hero since I first heard his name. I have pictures of me in a cowboy outfit from when I was less than five years old.

@@jcherry50 it brought back memories of his visit to the Klamath Falls, Oregon hospital I was in after a tonsillectomy. He made a point of visiting kids at nearly every town he stopped in. Still in awe today of this great role model.
For anybody to say that Roy was an actor and not a cowboy, He was both, but to be able to ride the way he could and have Trigger do all the tricks with such faint slite of hand is just pure skill. Roy and Trigger could win a dressage test and make it look like a casual sunday afternoon ride in the country . Rest in Peace Roy
This is great. I don't see much of my childhood hero anymore. I was a cowboy, for all of my youth, probably because of Roy Rogers. Shaped many a hat, but never put one in the shower. LOL We always steamed them. Good to see you, my old friend !!!
This was very interesting! Wonder how often he blocked a hat. Neat, candid look at a wonderful human bean. Very industrious, goes about the job quickly w aplomb.
I’ve watched this video before. Thank you for sharing it with us. I love to hear his voice, so natural and friendly. I visited the museum several times but didn’t know Roy would come out of his office a few times a day to greet & speak with visitors. I missed him all three times I stopped there. Such a shame they sold so many of Roy & Dales personal items. Was surprised that none of their children wanted the large family “lazy Susan” table.
Roy was always THE MAN!.. and I love seeing him block this hat. I'd always wondered...why his looked different..and better!..than the other cowboys.. Now I know!.. :)
@10:08 "...first part of 1947, I changed to this style...Happy Trails" That's choice movie trivia or metadata some might say, about the hat changeover. Interesting video ..... do you know who made your dad's hats or who he ordered them from ? My dad told me that someone in his family made Roy Roger's hats .... the name probably would have been Townsend .... just curious. Thanks.
I blocked my hat with Roy Rogers Crown years ago. My felt hat I have not yet gave it Roy Rogers Crown yet but I sure like that crown. I like blocking my own cowboy hats.
They lived in the desert and were in show-biz, that crown would not work so well for a working cowboy, especially if he was rained on once in awhile--that hat will retain rainwater. Roy always liked that front-peak style, used it for many years--it was a part of his unique look.
You can be POSITIVE that Roy’s hats ALWAYS got hung up!!!! After going through all that he would NEVER forget to keep it out of harm’s way.......getting accidentally sat upon!!!! YIKES!!!! 😳
The box in the video says "RESISTOL" - and they mention in the video that it is an 6-inch crown; so I guess it'd be roughly equivalent to the "Showdown" style Resistol is making these days.
steam is what my dad always used and if you go to a western wear store at the hat section I bet you find a steamer in the area if they do hat shaping., but a tea kettle with steam its sorta like a black smith working iron into steel, you heat up the part you want to work then it re hardens as it cools & drys don't have ti keave it tied up like that, a good coat of spray on stiffner would not hurt though after you are finished.
I found the video very Interesting as I block all of my hats and I appreciate that it is a matter of personal choice but I don't like the end result. The front of the crown looks good with a very unique shape to the top of the crown but there is a drastic slope towards the rear bringing it to about 3 inches high at the back and the very wide brim makes it more obvious. It looks like your head might come in contact with the inside of the crown before the hat is properly seated on the head. That said, he knows what he is doing and he did a good job of it.
If that hat was wool it would have warped the brim. So if you are not going to use steam to shape your hat and you choose to use water make sure that your hat is a high quality fur felt.

steam works really well for shaping a hat, better than just getting it wet.
Yes that sounds like it would work much better..
steam is what my dad always used and if you go to a western wear store at the hat section I bet you find a steamer in the area if they do hat shaping., but a tea kettle with steam its sorta like a black smith working iron into steel, you heat up the part you want to work then it re hardens as it cools & drys don't have ti keave it tied up like that, a good coat of spray on stiffner would not hurt though after you are finished.
