My high school govt teacher in 1979 was Jimmy’s stepson, Michael but I didn’t know if their relationship then. He was a really good, engaging teacher but I can see now, looking back, how devastated he was by his brother’s death. I do remember his asking me who my favorite actor was and I said Jimmy Stewart, having no idea he was his stepson! It must’ve sounded like I was trying to ingratiate myself but he was truly my favorite

Thank you for illuminating Jimmy Stewart's life. I had no idea he was such a player, which is disappointing to me, but his unrequited romantic love for Margaret is perhaps what sent him to seek solace in the arms of so many other women. I also did not know about his military service, an experience which can definitely take its toll on anyone. (My father had dark hair when he went to Vietnam; he returned home with gray hair. He was 37.)
Someone with Henry Fonda's looks and persona would have been a poor choice for the part of George Bailey. From the first time I saw It's A Wonderful Life, it's my own sort of tradition to watch it every Christmas. I love the idea of someone who thinks so little of himself learning that he is actually treasured and respected by his community. And Clarence of course is a hoot. ♥

The night he died I had an elaborate dream about him. I was not looking at any info about him and was just a bit of a fan of his movies. I dreamt he was muttering to himself in his bedroom for some time after the death of his ONLY wife, Gloria. He didn’t really want to live anymore. He got out of bed and wandered through his large home looking for her. At some point one of his children was there. He looked back and forth from my direction to who I assumed was his daughter and finally he slowly said he wanted to be with Gloria. These bits were confirmed at various points after his death.

Apart from finding out he was incredibly racist, relatively recently, last few years, he was one of the very few actors of his generation, you knew would be acceptable in upper middle class circles. Fred Astaire being another - but Stewart beat Fred, hands down, on looks.

I used to really like Jimmy Stewart - however, reading about how he was a racist while he served in the military in WWII and afterwards; also his wife said Jimmy had a real bad temper - Jykell and Hyde personality. Lastly, when Henry Fonda, his best friend, married Maureen Sullavan (his first wife, whom he loved deeply) and his best friend Jimmy Stewart had an affair, which broke up their marriage. Yeah, Jimmy Stewart not the Mr Nice Guy.

@@jeffreguett1511 I Maureen O Sullivan was the love of Fonda's life. While he divorced her or she divorced him - Fonda never really loved again until his last marriage. While he did not say anything about it publicly the fact that he never really loved again till his last wife - and yes after his first wife, he had affairs with lots of women. Also, Fonda and Steward differed a lot in politics - Stewart was a racist and Fonda the opposite - they discussed their politics one time and had a fist fight and did not talk again for at least a year. Then one went to the other and both agreed they would never discuss politics or their opposing beliefs again and they remained best friends. Fonda had a reputation and Stewart did too. I would take Fonda any day of the week over a man who is a racist, a man who had an affair with his best friend's wife and created heartbreak in his best friend. A man who comes off sweetly as a mild mannered man who has a terrible temper - his only wife call her husband Jekyll and Hyde. Stewart's wife loved him and they remarried for years.
