    Hello Friend how are you?!
    About a month ago I got an industrial machine similar to yours and I learned how to get the line in it by watching your video. The instruction manual is very small and you can not understand much of the explanation. It was mistranslated from Chinese to Portuguese. Your video saved me hahaha. 😄
    Thank you!!! 👍
    Hugs from Brazil!!! 😊

    my grandson who work for a company that cleans out 'junk' brought me one of these machines. it didn't have a table, but did have a clutch motor, the table, the machine, and no legs. I just found some k-legs for it. we hooked it up. it seems that the motor works fine - the machine works fine - but it's missing the throat plate to the left of the needle plate, and the switch to turn it off and on - doesn't work. do you have a suggestion on where to get parts? or a manual?

      Singer.com has manuals (click on "help/manuals" near the top) for free download. I think sewingpartsonline.com may have some parts for this machine, but I'm not sure.
      Good luck!

      I'm sorry, I sold that machine about 6 years ago, so I don't have anything to work with for a video on it. I remember mine being tricky to get the tension right when using a wide zig-zag stitch, but I didn't have it long enough to really get a handle on it. Sorry!

    Good day . thanks for the lesson. Sorry for the mistakes if there are any, I translate by Google translator. please tell me, I cannot create a zigzag stitch on the Zinger 20u33, the loop is made only on the left side, the thread is not captured on the right side, and as a result I get a straight stitch, I have been suffering for a week now, I bought a machine through second hands thanks in advance

      Hi!
      I sold this machine about 4 years ago, primarily because I was moving across the country, but also because a walking-foot machine suits my needs better.
      These are great machines, and I agree that older sewing machines (and pretty much everything else) are far better built than ones built today. I don't have much experience with more modern machines, but my sense is that they are fine, just some of the components may not be as solid as a few decades ago. In general, if I have a choice between a well-maintained vintage machine or an identical new machine, I'll always go for the vintage one. Just my opinion, though!
      I hope that helps, thanks for watching!

    Does this machine require sturdier or heavier thread or can I use my regular thread on a cone? Thanks

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  ปีที่แล้ว

      In general, this machine will use a range of threads similar to what any household domestic machine will use. Some versions of this machine have a "normal" thread spool holder on top of the machine, and some don't, but you should be able to use either with a free standing thread stand or whatever is attached to the machine.
      I hope that helps, thanks for watching!

    Great info. I have the exact same machine 20u Professional. My problem is needle size. This seems incredibly confusing. I will be using a heavy duty thread, V92 to stitch heavy canvas and sailcloth. Any links to the needles I should use would be great. I have had so many bits of advice but nothing specific. Many thanks. Andy UK

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Andy,
      You are correct, needle sizes are confusing, and with industrial machines you also have to consider the needle system that the machine uses (virtually all domestic machines use one needle system, but there are many industrial needle systems.
      In case you don't already know, the 20U uses needle system 135x5 (and there are about 5 other system names for the same system). If you search for 135x5 you should find what you need, or just search Singer 20U needle system.
      Regarding size, there are a couple of sizing systems, American and European.
      For V92 thread, I would suggest something like size 18 (American)/110 (European), or 20/120. (So when looking online, you are looking for a 135x5 needle in size 110 or 120.)
      The general rule of thumb on needle size is to choose the needle size that best fits your thread. The thread needs to pass fairly easily through the eye, but also needs to fit well in the channel on the needle shaft; too small of a needle will cause thread breakage, among other issues, and too big can cause malformed or skipped stitches, among other issues.
      I found this site to have some good info on the topic -
      www.servicethread.com/blog/article/choose-the-right-needle-size-for-your-industrial-sewing-thread
      I don't have shopping links to share, and many of the sites I purchase from are in the US, but I am certain there are good suppliers in the UK for industrial needles. I would suggest buying several packs in a few sizes to experiment with.
      I hope that helps, good luck with your projects!

    Thank you for the video. I just bought a 20u33 and working through some kinks. Could you share any info on the best peddle geometry or motor adjustment to support slow speeds? Also any input you have on thicker thread use for bold top stitch look would be great!

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ryan,
      First, I no longer own this machine, so I'm going from limited memory as far as this particular machine goes.
      I'll address the thread first. I forget what the maximum recommended thread size was for this machine, but I think it might be size 92 (aka V92 and several other designations). I use V69 on almost everything I sew, and occasionally use 92. I think the next common size up is 138, and I don't know how well (or if) the 20U will run it (but others on the internet certainly will know!). You might be able to run a thicker thread on top and a lighter thread in the bobbin.
      I don't really know anything about changing the pedal geometry or motor position in order to affect speed, but I don't believe that is an effective way to do it (I'm very much prepared to be wrong about this). One way I know of to change speeds is a different size pulley on the motor. Another, and probably better, would be to change to a servo motor with a speed adjustment knob so you can go slowly when you want and faster when you want. The shop I work for has servos on everything except for one machine, and it always takes a couple of moments to remember how to use a clutch motor when I use that machine. Servos are far more user-friendly and controllable. (I like clutch motors, by the way.)
      The question that comes to my mind is - what are you going to be sewing? I hate to say it, but thick thread and slow speeds isn't exactly what this machine is made for - a fact I learned after I bought mine. The 20U is primarily designed for the garment manufacturing and alterations market, and is intended to sew apparel fabrics for the most part (it also is apparently excellent for embroidery, but I never used it for that). Like any other sewing machine, it can be made to do other things, but if you're doing heavy upholstery or leatherwork or something, I'd suggest looking for a more appropriate machine. One of the reasons I sold mine was that my Sailrite was far more capable of sewing the thicker technical fabrics (Cordura, ballistic nylon, webbing etc.) that I use most.
      Anyway, I hope that helps. The 20U is a good machine, and a great first industrial machine, but it is fairly limited. Good luck, and let me know if you have other questions.

    Any hint if I can slow it down?

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The easiest way to slow the machine would be to put a servo motor with speed adjustment on it. Then you can turn the speed down to your comfort level.
      You could possibly change the pulley on the motor to slow it down, but whatever speed you end up with is what you have. You would need to replace the belt if you change pulleys (depending on how big/small the pulley is).
      I hope that helps, thanks for watching!

      There are a number of cheap servo motors available on eBay and Amazon. Check out my video "Dumping The Clutch," it explains a lot of the process. It's pretty simple, and you can probably just pick the cheapest motor you find, I suspect they're all pretty similar. More expensive ones (like the Sailrite Workhorse I'll be reviewing soon) will have better instructions and support, and probably better quality control.

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      This machine uses 135x5 needles (it's complicated, as it's labelled different ways, but 135x5 will get you there). I usually used size 18 with V-69 nylon thread. The needle size is dictated by the thread size, which is (generally) dictated by the fabric you're sewing.
      The needle is installed with the groove to the front on the needle oriented to the front of the machine.
      I hope that helps, let me know if you have other questions!

    question : do you think this machine would be good for marine vinyl , I was thinking of redoing my boat seats

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robin,
      The 20U/20-33 is primarily designed as machine for clothing alterations and light manufacturing, not marine fabrication or upholstery. It's a sturdy and powerful machine (depending on the motor bolted to it), and has a long stitch length, so it can certainly tackle an upholstery job, but I wouldn't buy one specifically for that purpose. A walking-foot machine would be better for marine vinyl and other thick or hard-to-feed materials. If you don't have/can't find/don't want to buy a walking-foot machine, any sturdy vintage domestic machine should be able to struggle its way through vinyl almost as well as the 20U, so if you already have something like that (or find a cheap one at a garage sale or thrift store, etc.) I'd try that before spending the money or dedicating the space to a 20U.
      If you already have a 20U, then go for it! It's not ideal, but it should work fine.
      I hope that helps, good luck with your project and thanks for watching!

      Hi!
      I no longer own this machine, but if you are referring to the belt that connects the motor to the hand wheel, it should be as simple as tilting the machine back to take out the tension, and slipping the belt off. I don't recall exactly how the belt cover is on this machine, it's possible you may have to remove some screws and take the cover off, but that should be pretty simple.

    Thank you for your demonstration . I have 2 questions for you . First , Dose this machine work wit twin/double needle ?? For things like decorative top stitching . Second , how thick this machine can sew ?? I'm asking about things like heavy wool for coats , jeans , fleece and the like . I'm an amateur tailor , and mainly I make suites and coats , and seriously thinking of getting one . Specially that they're much cheaper than some home sewing machines .....

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This machine is not equipped for using a double needle. I imagine you could make it work, but it isn't specifically made for it like a double needle machine is. Some of my other machines have two sets of tension discs to allow for running a twin needle; this does not. I've never tried using a twin needle, so I'm afraid I don't have a lot of input here, sorry!
      I generally run size v69 thread (equivalent to Tex 70), and I've had no issues. This machine is intended to do light production and alterations on garments, so I think it should be a good choice for your tailoring needs. The only trouble I've had with it is getting over thick seams on slippery nylon fabrics.

    • @thejasonofalltrades
      @thejasonofalltrades  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is no bother, that's why I'm here!
      This machine does NOT come with a walking foot. I presume you know, but there are walking foot sewing machines, and then there are accessory walking feet that can be attached to non-walking foot machines to give SOME of the advantages of a walking foot. So if you're talking about a walking foot that attaches to a non-walking-foot machine, then no, it doesn't come with one, and I don't know of one specifically for this machine. It's possible a Singer-compatible foot might work, but this machine is very fast and powerful compared to Singer home machines, and I wonder if a home machine walking foot attachment would hold up. This is why I currently have 7 sewing machines ....
      I don't do a lot of apparel work, but the only issue I've had with this machine feeding well is on thick seams on Cordura nylons. In fact, I'm strongly considering selling this machine, since I end up using my Sailrite walking-foot machine more because of its superior feeding (even though it's slower). But I imagine with stuff like denim it would work better than it does with Cordura.
      Thanks for the question!

      My only suggestion is that you might find an industrial sewing shop and see if they have one. I'm guessing it's a generic winder that will fit many machines. There's a shop in Denver called Ralph's Power, you might look them up and give them a call, if they don't have one they might have better information. Also, you might want to check out my bobbin winding video for this machine. I show how to wind a bobbin while sewing with the machine. I'm assuming you're referring to the drive belt that connects the balance wheel of the machine to the motor under the table. My machine head is mounted to a table that formerly had a different head mounted to it, and is not the factory configuration, as far as I can tell. So I don't know specifically how yours will work. That said, on my motor there is a long bolt with an adjusting nut that moves the motor back and forth to adjust the belt tension. Yours might be different, but basically the tension should be adjusted at the motor. I hope that helps!

      Hola, He utilizado google para traducir esto. ¿Quieres decir que la aguja está rota? Algunas palabras no fueron reconocidas.

      si se rompe la aguja cuando haces zig zag se deba a una mala calibracion de el cangrajo de la maquina que es la pieza que esta en la parte de abajo y es donde va la bobina, debes hacerla calibrar .
      espero te sirva
