I think the main use of a needle positioner is in the making of a button hole also the positioner will allow you to sew near the edge of an otherwise wide foot. Good luck in your decision, I hope my modest offering will help some.
personally I love the needle position switch, great for piping, zippers. I find it just let me get a little closer and easier to keep piping tight. IMHO
Just bought one of these last weekend. Tough basic machine, and versatile for all sorts of general purpose sewing. It's like my Singer 237 Fashion Mate, if it went to the gym and bulked up. Also this is my first clutch motor. Is it normally really stiff to turn the balance wheel by hand on a clutch machine? It takes what seems like an uncomfortable amount of force, but if I adjust the motor up to loosen the belt tension, it starts to slip at times. Is there some sort of trick to learning to live with the clutch motor or something? I cleaned and oiled it real good, so without the belt on it turns super easy.

These bobbin winders have a rubber tire inside that only lasts a decade or so depending on use. It is very possible yours needs to be serviced. The top cover comes off and then you can see, remove, replace the tire.
I just bought this machine and I am trying to set it up for free motion embroidery.....the thread keeps breaking ...I cant seem to get the tension correct for free motion... Any advice is appreciated
Lots of things can cause thread to break. Rotten thread, misaligned hook, improper threading, improperly set take up lever, operator error, the list goes on. Get good thread, change your needle and start over. Then if that doesn't work turn machine slowly by hand to find what and where the thread breaks.
I had the needle in backwards..the instruction manual said put the needle in with slot in front....that was the issue...should have had slot in back....duh

Look at the bottom of the machine. There are two levers that the knee lift can actuate. Adjust your knee lift from one to the other.
