My question is how they ended up in a town so small?

Most likely because it’s easier to get jobs there since the locals have moved away to bigger towns and cities. Most Burmese refugees in Australia (just like those who’ve resettled in America) work manual labor jobs in factories and meat plants etc. plus these people traditionally live in villages and in the forest so they are probably more comfortable in small towns than in big cities in the west.
