  • The moment we've all been waiting for. Finally time to take this bucket bolts 1955 Chevy Nomad out on its first test drive. I have been meticulous with all the wiring and plumbing of fuel and brake lines.
    So after all the countless hours over the gears it was time to go for a test drive. Can you guess how it went? Exactly! not well! This car did go the furthest its gone in many many years. Lots of tuning is still needed but we'll figure it out on the next one.
    What do you guys think is wrong with it?

    Just FYI, put your EFI trigger (switched hot) on a relay to isolate it.. Snipers in particular are sensitive to electrical interference, and isolating its power from the rest of the car’s electrical system will help.

    I had a sniper, and never got it to work right. I even sent it back to Holley, and they gave it a clean bill of health. After 2 months of struggle I gave up and went back to carb. Couldn't be happier, and I'll never get stranded.

  • @davidp.6142
    @davidp.6142 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I've done several of those sniper systems, all worked well except for one, tour getting EMI interference. That coil being mounted by wiring can cause it, you have to be very careful running any of the snipers by noisy components, alternator, distributor, coil, power wires etc...hope that helps 😀

    • @AndyGeesGarage
      @AndyGeesGarage ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree, it’s likely “noise” from the coil or plug wires running across or near the Holley wiring.

He's run this set up and could probably help you get it to sing, That being said I myself have a place my heart for these Nomads. Don’t know if this would be relevant to your problem but........
    Years ago a friend put a computerized TPI on his Hotrod. It ran like a scalded dog until it hit operating temp, then would shutdown like he turned it off at the switch. It would not start until it cooled down a bit, then started and ran great, til the temp got up again. He couldn’t figure it out and finally got in touch with a local Chevy dealer mechanic who told him when wiring it up all the connections had to be SOLDERED CONNECTIONS. Seems typical wiring connectors was causing a degradation in the voltage from the heat, enough that the computer didn’t like the flux in voltage and would shutdown the engine. He took it apart, soldered all the wiring connections, and never had another problem after that.
    Not saying it’s your problem but the computerized systems like you have can be finicky. Hope you figure it out! 👍😎

    Get the wiring out of the intake, its probably too close to the distributor and its throwing off electrical interference and the no data thing must be ground related. Make sure you have a nice ground ftom the body to chassis and engine to chassis. I know you have solid mounts but they could have powdercoat or something. Also run a ground strap from the head to the body these might seem like trivial things but ive seen them have issues on regular EFI on all types of makes. The sniper may be more reliant on grounding and dedicated power. Also could be real sensitive to electrical interference like a distributor, coil, or alternator. Youll get it sorted and itll be good in no time im sure. You probably already have it taken care of!

    There are only four reason why the efi would be acting that way. Electronic interference because computer is close to battery or other electronic devices. It's not receiving enough ground signal (ground straps). The MAP sensor is not picking up signal because the TPI system put the sensor inside their throttle body. Move the MAP sensor down from the throttle body to the intake. 1 bar rife sensor are better for NA than the GM used in most systems. The power wire from the efi must be directly hook up to the red post on the battery. Hope that helps.

  • @garyowens3687
    @garyowens3687 ปีที่แล้ว

    Holley’s got to have it’s own power and on a relay also give it its own separate ground. A battery ground and engine block to frame ground won’t do it. Hope that helps again the more grounds the better.

      Old school is sometimes simpler and I saw way more people on power tour messing with there EFI than I saw adjusting there carbs

      I was thinking to myself during the video. ..I bet that thing would be running just fine if it was running regular carbs. I still like the idea of the efi setup hes running, I think he'll get it dialed in.

    Dan,
    I could empathize with so much with you at 17:00 to 18:00 minute mark , when you were sitting in the car all ready to go and it just kept dieing. Wha? How? Whyyyy? It was just fine a moment ago........ I am sure you will get it in the end, but oh man, in between. I would be trying to find the tools I threw, you are a paragon of patience.

    Good thing your copilot has a positive attitude so you don't go over the edge when things get a bit frustrating, nice work Dani. It's time to have a brownie take a deep breath and go over all the connection points and verify, make a list, check it twice. Good video, this stuff isn't always sunshine and puppy dog tails, it can be a pain in the rear sometimes, but when it's a pain and you figure it out you always remember.

    Hi Dan, another idea 💡 for the radiator is to install a second fan behind the radiator. Set it up to be pushing and pulling at the same time to cool the radiator faster when in operation. I don't know, I'm just an old man that's been working on machines for forty years. Yikes 😳 forty years. Time sure flies in life. Thanks.

    Check the distributor, i had the same poping problem with my 91 s10 and it would loose power like it was running out of gas. I replaced every sensor and the fuel pump, filters and the throttle body and played with the timing, i was 2 seconds away from replacing the distributor when i noticed the contact on the end of the rotor button was narrow and it should be wide. All that crap and it was a bad from new rotor button. Its been running fine for over a year now.

    Contact Holley, they will give you all the information you need 👍 in the meantime read everything that was sent with a sniper, and how to set it up. It's important that you do every step exactly as described. It's important to understand fully the technology you using. Keep up the good work and the cool videos guys 👍✌️🇺🇲

    With all those wires and electronics make sure you have good grounds. Add a few more it won’t hurt. Battery to chassis, battery to engine, engine to body etc. then double check wiring to make sure you have good clean power to certain sensors/computer. You’ll get it figured out. One day at a time.

    Dan , I think you have a couple of choices. 1you. An go through and read all the comments and read all the directions on what you installed ,2read all the directions on all the equipment and fix it and 3 get some help from a tuner. You will figure it out. As always it a good video

    I don't know about the Sniper system but if that was a carb I would say you have fuel delivery problems. Every time you try and accelerate it pops back and dies. Light throttle and it seems to be more settled. I would check out the fuel system and make sure the fuel pressure is staying in limits.

    If there is a way to test all the components, to make sure that nothing is faulty. I might start there because you can do everything right and if something in the computer or circuitry is bad, nothing you do will matter. But I'm just thinking out loud. Good luck and remember, most of us are living vicariously through you, we would love to have your problems, because that would mean we would have an awesome 55 nomad in our garage.

      Also I had a fuel delivery issue.. It would just run.out of gas.. THAT was a B!T€H to figure out.
