I grew up in this era and practically lived at the drag strip for quite a few years. This is my kind of racing. Man, I love these cars. A '40 Willys coupe just doesn't get any better.
I was born in 54... Growing up in the 60's and 70's was literally the very best of times. We tore up more parts racing and loved every minute of it. Girls, racing and fast cars.
@@larrycumbo2023 Most people don't know about those cars. Everyone knows Yenko. There was also a Baldwin/ Motion. Unbelievable fast cars. I grew up when they were new.
I was born in the 60s. Went to high school in the late 70s. There is nothing quite like the sound of a big block V-8. Cars today will never have the soul and the class of the cars back then.
Born in 51 my gasser was a 41 Ford Business Coupe old 392 Hemi and a 3 speed with od, changed to a 4 speed a year later. Built it myself in Pops garage starting at 14
I and my friends bought factory muscle cars, no extra tinkering, every thing original, including exhaust system. I'm 76 now, graduated in 1964, got a chev impala 2 door hardtop. It had a factory 300 hp 327 and a 4 on the floor transmission..... it was very fun to drive! We would have our own 1/4 mile strip on a county tar road. We lived in a rural area. Nothing like the sound of a powerful V-8 engine working! Thanks for the memories! Ron
I worked Capital Speedway (near DC) as security in the 50s. I got to see Garlits and others in action from 20 feet away. That will bring tears to your eyes real quick!
I've 'been in Texas for the last 40 years but I grew up in Chicago. I loved this track! Used to go to all the fun shows in the 70's and early 80's. Broadway Bob riding on the front of jet dragsters and such.. This place and US 30..... like the commercials used to yell at us......"Where the great ones RUN!!!". PS...anyone remember The Backup Pickup??
that sour grape, i had a 62 chevy deuce in 75. 326 motor off road cam, 556 rear end, hurst competition shifter. quick little car. takes a lot of money to keep it running 10's quarter mile.
I was born in 1947 so I was old enough to see the mid 50's cars run. The height of the drag culture's influence on youth and the general public was the late 50's to the mid 60's. The rails, gassers and stockers were amazing. The nitro and burning rubber fumes, the crowd going wild. It was all really the greatest show ever. Never mind the experimental cars. I saw two hydrogen peroxide and Turbonique cars run. The Jet Dragsters at the AHRA and "outlaw" straps were a memory for a lifetime. Yeah there were fires, engine explosions and Crashes but that was a lesser occurance. And often the guy you were rooting for was eliminated. But through it all, and I still go to like 8 or 9 events a year, the drags were one of my absolute best times.....
Wish that I had an alarm clock that sounded this healthy! Sour Grape Nova seemed to hook pretty good. But the Joker had an off day. Otherwise, keep em coming! Nice videos
Even the damn Ramblers are faster then me, But not this year, going to break thru that 9 second wall , easily !!! Great show, & familiar badd ass cars, Going to get up there someday !!!
The prewar Willys coupes, the Henry J, English Ford Anglia, and the 70s Opel GT are the 4 cars I can think of that look completely normal as a drag car and look totally ridiculous when 100% stock

Thanks for posting this! Is the 301 car a Henry J? It's an interesting coincidence. My fathers friend Fritz used to have a gas station down in the Miami area on US 301 called the 301 garage. My dad worked for the local Don Allen Chevrolet dealer at the time. He and Fritz raced a Henry J #301 and an Oldsmobile in the Hollywood area on the dirt track along with figure 8 racing there. Fritz went on to work for AJ foyt years later on his team.
The gassers were great but what i enjoyed more were the modified production cars. Those wild high winding small blocks and looking like your everyday street cars.Nothing like them
I think I have seen that black Oldsmobile with the flame paint job before at Bradenton Florida almost 30 years ago. If it is the one I think it is, he has two of them.
We see the transformation of those beautiful cars and what they produce is a desire to cry, as there can be people so insensitive when destroying their beauty and that American beauty of the 50s, 60s, this only gives rage and impotence.
0:10, my uncle had a 'vette just like that....he drag raced...all I remember is my dad bragging that the car put out 600 hp. Would it be this gasser class?
Maybe it's just me, but I've always considered a gasser as on that has the body up off the front wheels (a high look) and big, fat, wide back tires, like the 2 at 3:39, and 6:10 into the video.
I love the sound of good old American muscle! The sounds that come out of these new cars are hideous. It doesn't sound like power, it sounds like crap.
Oh huh I've been to the same place I saw the joker car I think it was a little lifted then what I saw in the vid and that old corvette and the flame car
I lived in those times it was wonderful, I was always tearing up my hot rod I was only 16 or 17 and a good looking girl moved in our neighborhood she said for 2 years she didn't know what I looked like Because all she ever saw was my boots hanging out underneath my car. I drove it like I stole it⚙️⚙️⚙️🚀🚀🚀
For drag racing you don't need a big gas tank. You're only going 1/4 mile per trip. Putting the tank on the front made it easy to access. The 1st company that put these small aluminum gas tanks on the market was Dean Moon's Moon Engineering (in whose shop the 1st Shelby Cobra got its Ford V8 installed) represented by the famous "MoonEyes" symbol. Thus such tanks were commonly called "Moon tanks". This front mount Moon tank was very popular for many classes of drag racers back then. Later on safety fuel cell tanks were developed and they got located in the back. So you don't see the front tank on modern race cars. Only on vintage race cars or photos from the 50s through 70s.
