    What I like about Janet is that she presents herself not as a stereotyped, 3 snaps and a twist "caricature" of a woman - like too girly to be a real girl. It's funny, theatrical and I understand a bit of a security blanket protecting some gay or trans people from baring their soul to possible derision, etc. She is just herself, she's intelligent and lady like - she's not pretending to be. That is who she is. I know many women like her and I would gladly welcome her into my circle of friends as a woman - period. I just like her as a person. That's all I wanted to say.

      I mean, it's very rude and presumptuous for you to assume just because someone doesn't perform femininity or womanhood in ways that are familiar to you that it is a caricature and a "security blanket" as opposed to who they, actually, are as people. Everyone is different. Get out of your white feminism bubble. Women, and people, are multitudes and exist on a spectrum, which includes all kinds of expressions including the "stereotyped, 3 snaps and a twist 'caricature'" as you call it.

    Perhaps the most valuable piece of this discussion, for me, is the "language-ing" of the complexities of the gender spectrum: perceived gender, gender assigned at birth, cis- and trans-, etc. It's also valuable to hear about the complexities of self-disclosure for Mock: "coming out" as trans within different spaces, for different reasons. This helps to clarify the parameters of discourse within those settings.

      Complexities of the gender system as for who? Mainstream there is no complexity, you are male or female gender. Just as you should not have to live with our forced beliefs of gender, neither do we have to live with your forced definitions of gender.
      This modification of the English language simply to be politically correct and cater to movements is disturbing.

      I'm not sure I understand your arguements. I am using language that, in fact, speaks to my own experience, as I don't fit neatly into the gender binary. I am grateful for this language, which I inherited from great LGBTQ and feminist thinkers, because it helps to give form, context, and clarity to my lived experience. In order to claim (my place in society, my right to exist, etc.) I must name (my experience, my environment). This is because your "mainstream" tells me that my own experience did not happen, wasn't legitimate, isn't of value. You don't need to "live with" my language, but you need to live with me, Jennifer Fama, because I'M NOT GOING ANYWHERE!!!

      Jennifer Fama : The LGBT movement is not ideological. It is a human rights and civil rights movement. Sexual orientation and gender identity are accidents of birth, just like skin colour, and ethnic origin. Those are things you don't decide upon; they are not a belief or choice. The so-called main stream definitions are wrong. We clung on to them for so long because simplicity is attractive, especially when it is binary. But no matter how much easier to believe the simpler definitions may be, that doesn't make them true. And forcing real people to fit those definitions is barbaric. Gays having to pretend to be straight out of fear of being discriminated or killed ... that's not a life. The same is true for trans people: gender identity sometimes doesn't align with assigned sex at birth. But condemning them to a life of self-denial, or having them beaten, killed, and driven to suicide, just so that simplicity of definition may reign over reality ... is a crime against humanity.

    It's funny, I read some of the posts on here about who or what they believe Janet Mock to be. Some overly intellectual, some not so intellectual and some I don't even understand or pretend to understand. I am a gay black man in his fifties and I have lived in New York my entire life. I went to high school in New York and college in New York both where I have studied art and after reading Janet's book I felt that it was less about telling her own story and giving us insight to take a deeper look at our own lives and ask ourselves "what is our own stories and why are they important?" Because if you think long and hard about it, if she hadn't written this book no one would know that she was even trans. She would be seen as a beautiful multi-ethnic woman. I can remember seeing trans woman all of my life and never thinking twice about it, Janet Mock has the intellect to tell her own story in a way that makes the public sit up and pay attention and to also to give a voice and visibility to the trans community and in this day and age that takes a lot of guts. I truly love Janet Mock and I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next.

      shannon lion I have to agree.. The marketing department of Google Docs must not have high standards -- or, are standards lower today? A clear, authoritative, and confident manner of speaking is essential to communication, and communication, direct or otherwise, is such an important element of marketing. He's the wrong employee for this particular job -- "... the list goes on and on and on..." -- adolescent at best considering he's interviewing a newly minted, bestselling author... "I do marketing at Google docs..." --- do marketing? Wow. And... the list goes on and on and on.

    Ok I'm officially confused, this beautiful woman used to be a guy? Wow that team of doctors did a fantastic job. Forgive my ignorance I just don't know much about this Transgender movement.

      Their was no team of doctors. She took hormone blockers before she hit puberty followed by estrogen (female hormones) so she never went through male puberty just female secondary puberty which allowed her to basically develop into a woman - wide hips, breasts, voice and all those characteristics came naturally. Starting hormones before puberty is probably the best opportunity if you're going to transition, sadly most places it's not allowed until you're 18 and passed puberty. By then you'll have already gotten a deep voice, etc that some (but not all) trans women do.
      Also she was never born male. Gender is defined by what you identify as - sex is what you are born. Her sex was male, as a baby she couldn't of course identify herself and so she was assigned (gender) male at birth, but she mentally was assigned as female. That's where gender dysphoria comes in which is an actual medical condition.
      It's all really not that complex, once you're more educated on a topic the more you understand. (:

      I don't know if it's that sad that people have to wait until they're 18. It's a huge decision to transition from one gender to another and going on hormone treatment will change your life forever. I wouldn't say many people under 18 are mature enough of know themselves enough to make such a decision, let alone prepubescent children.

      Christian Taylor-Williams, there were doctors she went to Thailand at 18 to have surgery. Hormone therapy isn't what I would describe as having "come naturally". She has breast implants also.

    Dearest Janet, I am your fan. I love and respect you so much! The thing is that I am an ex-transwoman. Painfully, people always judge me and accuse me of being an anti-LGBT just because I am an ex-transwoman and that is so untrue. I am tired of being judge ALL MY LIFE as a transwoman (in the past) and now as an ex-transwoman. I respect and love the LGBT Community and in fact many of closest friends are LGBT individuals. I run a non-profit organization to support people like me (ex-LGBT) which is something that is close to my heart. It is SO NOT an anti-LGBT. The world around me is so critical about individuals like me. Do you think it is the rights of a LGBT individual to choose to be an ex-LGBT? I love to hear from you. By the way, I too experience the shaving of my head (like you did) when I was a boy. But in my case I shaved my own head because I was fed-up of being abused, misunderstood, and rejected as a transgirl. Hope to hear from you. Love you Janet!

      If you make a list of all aspects about a given individual, their body will definitely make up part of that list. In that sense, while we can agree that she always had the mind of a woman and phrase it that way, it's silly to criticize people who pick up on the formerly male traits of her body. It's not like that was a mere detail.
      After all, it takes getting used to to the idea that we regard someone based on their self-perception first, given that our brains are evolutionarily so used to defining people based on our superficial perception.

      shawn8093 I agree. And I wouldn't blame anyone, including myself as a straight guy, if my brain is quite focussed on identifying clear feminity in order to determine if I will be potentially attracted to someone or not.
      Any hint of maleness seems to get in the way of that potential attraction. It's just a different type of attitude towards women than towards guys. Makes sense evolutionarily. And it seems a bit difficult sometimes, at least for some people (including myself) to completely separate someone's past from their present.
      That being said, I can fully accept that she is not a man and that she is definitely a type of woman. And if a woman is trans, but passes completely, then I've recognized that my brain forgets any male connotations, because it doesn't recognize them.
      So I guess there's a significant difference between how we refer to people & treat people socially/legally...and then how we perceive people in terms of potential attractions. In which case, for some straight guys, being a trans woman might just be a characteristic that some guys aren't into, while others might be relaxed about it...same as with any other characteristic of a person.

    I'm spiritually hurt over what's taking place in our lives at this present time. Life is getting harder and harder for us all. Being a complete "heterosexual" man living in a world that support men to perpetrate living as women, is unnervingly disturbing. Permission to institute such confusion will eventually lead societies straight to hell. Its violent robbery and rape against nature. Forgive me for my opinion. God can express it better than me. Your issues is with God not me. What happened to "In God We Trust?" If we as society of people choose to do whatever we want to do without boundary laws, that means murderers, rapists, thieves can also do whatever they want to do, which will eventually decrease the population and damage the structure of life. Laws are vital to human beings. The Holy Bible is the Truth...and the Truth is that cross-dressing and transgenderism is a threat to the future of mankind & womankind.

      Owen Rich My issue is neither with you or "God." The Holy Quran also condemns a number of things, but that is none of my business. If you are a Muslim, that is fine with me. What is not fine with me is when you expect me to live my life according to the laws of Islam. If you are a Christian, that is fine with me. What is not fine with me is when you expect me to live my life in accordance to the laws of Christianity. I'm an American, and I follow the laws of America. And according to the constitution, there is, nor should there ever be, a state Relligion.
      What happended to "In God We Trust?" Nothing happened to it. That was never in the constitution. And America has never had a State Religion. Nor will it ever.
