- Welcome back, plant enthusiasts! In this exciting follow-up to our top 10 most resilient houseplants, we're diving deep into a more dark side of my plant collection. Today, I reveal the Top 10 common houseplants that, for various reasons, didn't make the cut in my collection. 🌿💔
If you missed the first part of this mini-series, be sure to check it out to see which plants have thrived under my care for many years. This time, we're flipping the script and exploring the ones that I parted ways with. Whether it's a loss of interest, peculiar growth habits, or the challenge they presented, these plants have all been part of my plant journey.
First on the list are the Calathea and Marantas. Yes, they were also in my top 10 plants to keep, but their uniqueness lands them in both categories. Next, we have the iconic Monstera Deliciosa, which, despite its popularity, didn't fare well with me. We'll also talk about the Fittonia or Nerve Plant, known for its striking leaves but demanding nature.
The Polka Dot Plant Hypoestes, with its vibrant spots, caught my eye but eventually lost its place in my heart. Similarly, the String of Hearts, Cissus, and various Ferns, though beautiful, posed their own unique challenges. And who can forget the quirky String of Pearls, Dolphins, Bananas, and the Tradescantia? Each of these plants has a story, and I'll share why they didn't work out for me.

I would totally have all those plans on my list too because I've had them done it. I've got my own reasons for not liking them. But yes you nailed it.
I agree with most of them, I sold my all green Monstera for same reasons, sold and given away many Tradescantia, I don't like the Party/Purple something plant, it seems to me like plants growing spontaneously in the garden, too leggy, BUT I love the easy ferns so far (Phlebodium aureum Blue Star fern and the nest ferns, Asplenium types), I don't mind mixing them in the room where I have Aroids, and I love Ceropegia, I find the all green one better looking [variegata seems ill to me :D] which actually grows in winter and flowers as well in the winter months, those cinnamon scented flowers are quite cute! And it's so easy!
100% agree with you on all these... as well as musa (theyre always brown in my care) and also I've stopped propagating everything. To keep my collection small, I like to play "Sophies Choice "- and look at two random plants and decide which i would keep, and which goes into the bin.

🇦🇺 I had to laugh with your 'all strings of...' comment 😅 having said that I don't think succulents do well indoors. I will occasionally bring something in for a day or two if it's looking spectacular. Other than that, they are happily outdoors on the north facing veranda. And I do love the "strings of..." And have several different varieties. I have noticed they will drop off if they're a bit dehydrated, I water mine the day before trying to do anything with them.
I am on my 4th? Aluminium plant, I've actually managed to rehab My plant from the brink of death... If it dies in never buying another one! Easy care my 🫏 !!
Fittonia over polka dot, they remind me of jewel orchids 🥰 I like to use them in my terrariums so I keep propagations in the humidity unit

For the first time I totally agreed with all your picks and mostly for the reasons you said. I would add Diffenbachia. I think they are beautiful but I can’t keep one alive. I find Alocasia and anthurium much easier. 🤣

Agree with all of these! Have one calathea (freddy) and tradescantia (turtle vine) that are super easy-going, but not interested in trying any others again. My other choices I'll not bring into my home anymore include just abt every philodendron and spider plants.

I don't focus on rare stuff, more of the "interesting" things. Just imagine the weird, funky growing plants that normal peple call strange, gangly and "why would you grou that" combined with aroids, ferns, hyoas and suculents. I was thinking about letting go of P. Red Emerald and maybe my two ZZs (normal and Raven) since they aren't doing that great and I have baby plants from all of them.
String of hearts (Svícník in czech, meaning 'candle man' basically) is really nice and I got 4 new variants from a swap recently, extending the weird plant list. String of pearls is wery slow and hardy when you grow it as an actual suculent, so it lives among them in my window, also a keeper in its 5cm pot.
I'd say the hardest part about letting go of plants is considering how much care do they need and how well they grow. For example Tradescantias, both Zebrina and Pallida are very easy and pretty both hanging in the window and in summer even potted outside on my windowsill, SE window, fully blasted by the sun till 4pm in summer. Theát's where I put all extra cuttings of echeverias, kalanchoe and aloe, right in the pot with cherry tomatoes, even radishes.
I am sorry for the rant, I guess it's just very hard to let go of plants when they do well. I even kept a cacti I burned in spring and the little stinker blooms every year just to show me his will to live😅. I happily throw away pieces ridden with mealybugs and scale, if it's severe, don't worry :D.
PS: I do have to bent my head to get by the monstera plant to the window and I will happily keep doing that :D
The only Calathea I still have is the Musaica. It is pretty forgiving. Also, like yourself, I’d still likely have my Rufibarba, if I hadn’t let it crisp. I may someday repurchase one of those and I really love the Orbifolia, but it is in the likely not category for sure.
Hi. I'm Colombian. Tree ferns abound in my country. They, and Anthuriums are originally from South America, as are a number of Monsteras and Philodendron. Here are the requirements for Tree Ferns:
In Colombia they grow on the mountains at approx 2,400 mts above sea level or higher.
Temperature: 5°-25°C. But hey prefer 8° - 23° C.
Average humidity: 75% (no less than 65% as these live in cloud forests)
Soil acidity: 5-6 PH
Water frequency: approx 3x a week. Do not let water pool. They prefer to be watered often and have moderately aerated, moist substrate.
Sun exposure: Approx. 4-6 hrs of morning sun. Do not expose them to 12 hrs of full sun. Eventually, as they grow, they can withstand more sunlight, but not in the first couple of years. Since you're in the UK, you might consider getting it during autumn, it will appreciate the drop in temperature at night.
I see you have an Anthurium Waroqueanum. While most people think they require a lot of heat, your Waroqueanum can grow in the same conditions as the Fern Tree. In general, Anthuriums will be fine in temperatures of 15°C - 30°C.

@@Houseplantygoodness With pleasure. It's second nature to me. I learned about the flora in Colombia thanks to my dad. He looooved waking the family up at 4:00am to go road trips. He couldn't get enough of the change in panorama.
I on the other hand, can't begin to express how much I hated it. It's the ultimate dress in layers: a wool sweater, over a long sleeve shirt, over a t-shirt, over a bathing suit; and jeans over shorts. It's the Latin version of a matryoshka doll 😄 🤣 😂.
We'd begin our journey at 4:30 am at 2,300 mts, have hot chocolate and cheesebread (a Colombian revelation) for breakfast at 5,600 mts, and seafood dinner in the Caribbean coast.

Also, bare in mind when I say 4-6 hrs of sunlight, I mean sunlight close to the Equatorial line. Since you're in the UK, make adjustments of 1-2 + hrs. After 1 or 2 years, it can take 12 hrs of full sun exposure.
The main thing is don't let it get too warm and he'll grow to give your conservatory lovely dappled light ✨️
This was all really interesting 😃thanks both of you. I had a tree fern, I loved it. It was about 3ft tall when my hubs bought it for my birthday. It got to over 5ft but we put it in a pot to move house in winter (no fronds😊) Unfortunately it died because my hubs and son lit a large iron cauldron full of cut tree branches etc too close to my lovely fern. (Dicksonian Antarctica) i did warn them, but…… anyway, I live in Cornwall so perfect tf climate 😊
I feel your pain on the Monstera deliciosa. I have wanted to get rid of mine because it takes too much space that I don't have. But I have never seen a deliciosa at other houses that grow like mine (very very small internodal spaces, big fenestrated leaves, it's more compact and doesn't really climb) so I don't know how I would be able to get another like this. So right now I'm taking top cuttings and keeping it small this way. I will hopefully move within a few years and as I only get a new leaf every two months, it's a very slow grower and I think I'll be fine until moving

I've gotten rid of 95% of my velvet leaf anthuriums.the leaves can't even finish a whole year without yellowing or dying..calethea's leaves curling when thirsty.philodendrons that were hyped up but not really nice looking.
Now I'm only keeping plants that take alot of months before leaves die off.

I grow orchids because their flowers stay long and sometimes rebloom once the old ones die. The leaves take months, even year to die. You just have to put up having just leaves months after blooming.

My calathea makoyana survived bad soil, severe root rot, pre-humidifier air and most recently, thrips - only to give me three new leaves in february. At this point I’m convinced it can survive anything.
I also got a different calathea from my mom, a medallion I believe. It decided to off itself over the winter. Then, as I was getting ready to chuck it in the bin, I noticed it had TWO fresh growth points!
I hate calatheas on principle but boy do I LOVE to hate them.
All your reasoning makes perfect sense to me! I haven't been caring for houseplants all that long and I'm already to chuck many of them into the compost🤣
I loved my purple passion plant until it bloomed. I've had a tradescantia purple heart for 20 years. I grow tradescantia zebrina discolor in water.

I've never liked tradescantias, remembering my mum throwing out her brown, overgrown specimen every year and then starting the next generation from cuttings and I thought 'Why bother?' Now I've discovered the thradescantia sillamontana. It's sooo fluffy! 🥰Not sure yet if it will grow brown and straggly, I hope not! A plant I'd add is the aloe vera. It just outgrows every space and pot I have too quickly. 💚
They are literally grasses and grow happy and beautiful as a grass. Give it place and sun, maybe as an outdoor plant for the summer. Even the most common ones look full and beautiful as an outdoor plant in an oversized pot.

I've had no luck with aloe vera 😕 Fungal gnats actually ate one and the next one ... I bought them as an organic fertilizer/boost for my orchids. It currently only has 8 leaves with the longest still only a foot long.

I agree with your choices. I love calatheas and marantas but I now treat them as the type that go dormant in winter as they surprised me by growing back in the spring. I found out they do not like going dry or even almost dry. They like to be practically wet. I also discovered, by accident with my Calathea Makoyana (peacock) which I segregated for mealybugs, that they do not like bright light. I placed it in a bathroom by my east window with obscured glass. It thrived and even stopped getting dry tips! So calatheas may prefer just indirect muted light... I find that string of pearls do not like bright light either. I found that bottom watering for about 5 seconds and misting the hanging bits daily or every two days have kept them happy (I have one enjoying being in a sealed clear plastic bag as I was treating it for bugs - so the humidity must be enough for it?). I do the same watering system for my trailing calico kitten jade (also killed a few). One plant that I would include in your list is Callisia repens pink lady. I killed many but now I think I have figured it out 🤞- I bottom water for a few seconds, spray the soil under the leaves only to moisten it and never get water on the foliage. It faces north in my cold climate but has survived!

Snake Plant
Alocasia (for now at least. I kept some 2022-2023, but once they went dormant, they rotted. My fault, I will get some later.)
Philodendron green heartleaf of any kind.

❤ I really am spot on with your list of plants that I have had in my collection and I’m happy with your assessment of them! I’m currently working with the Nerve Plant and all of the drama surrounding it, and I just received the String of Pearls and the String of Tears and I am not sure if I can ever get those to thrive in my home, I’m usually able to keep any String of Whatever for about 3-6 months and then they just melt away somewhere! So,, yes I am absolutely able to concur with you on all of these matters!! Maybe try again next year? 🤷♀️

Totally agree on the strings! A friend gave me a huge pot full of string of needles aka Ceropegia linearis and repotting it was like sticking pins in my eyes. 😂

I have a twenty year old ceropegia and I love it so much. It doesn't look brilliant though as I don't have the ideal spot for it but it has travelled with me through all these years. I have it growing in a pot that looks like a mini Grecian urn and I loop the strings over and over so they don't trail too much and get tangled. A common name for it that I never hear now is Rosary plant.
I absolutely agree re the gynura. I had one years ago and the flowers are weird and wonderful looking and a fantastic contrast to the foliage but the smell was too much. I would say it was more of a very cheesy feet smell.

You are the first PantTuber who I've come across who is "hating" on ceropegias! But you're not alone ;-) I got rid of mine a while back, and for a reason nobody ever seems mention: Those blasted flowers! Mine would not stop blooming, and every day would start with having to sweep up a pile of flower debris and pick the rest of it out laborioiusly from in between the gaps in my shelves. Drove me mental! It had to go. Shame about the beautiful plant... but it's messier than a flock of caged cockatiels.
I have a Monstera which ended up in the backyard, it's doing its best to consume my old garage, it is huge.

Definitely over monstera deliciosas for the same reason. I'm an apartment dweller and can't do big plants. Plus I was given 4 cuttings. 3 I gave away and they've grown beautiful fentsrated leaves with their new owners. The one I kept has popped out leaf after lead for one year and not a single fentsrated leaf! How rude!
Although, the albo monsteras are awefully tempting...
I am currently drowning a maranta (to try and kill mealy bugs)
My main monstera deliciosa came with my home, and it's outside growing slowly well (zone 10 can be useful despite it being zone 10 san francisco aka most days are in the 60Fs max summers and ariods aren't super into that. We just had a heat wave last week that got to like 85F [which is normal weather in other parts of US, but rest of Us tends to have AC...]). Only problems is when it detached from the siding (paint isn't great to attach to) and fell, snapping the stem a bit, ended up recovering but also activted a growth point, so now it has to tops. The main top reached the top of the deck it's under, so the leaves ain't that happy -- I freed them so they can get some sun now. If my new-ish thia gets big, it's also going outside. Not an option for most tho!
My fitonnias are in my terrariums/vivariums also. Try a string of hearts in your vivarium in a way it roots to the background, no more untangling! Also some cissuses in vivarium can work well, outside of pests. I have some lady bugs in one atm. (with dart frogs, which as far as I have researched is fine -- too big for the frogs to become food)

Hi Memo, I have 4 different types of tradescantia: Nanouk, Zebrina, a green and white one and a two tone silver one. They aren’t as lush as summer but they are still growing very well. It’s my understanding that the discolour goes dormant in the winter and you restart in the spring. I’m surprised you didn’t take a cutting of your big monstera before you gave it away. 😀🇨🇦

For me: dracena, yucca, monstera adansonii, pilea peperomides - boring & not really beautiful.
Asparagus falcatus - because it grew large with very sharp thorns and it´s untamable. It used to be a cute little thing, until it got repotted... We were so relieved when the large thorny beast was finally gone (given away for free) :-D
Tradescantia: I like them very much (esp. albiflora rainbow), but it´s true that if one wants them to look good, it takes a lot of regular maintanance (pruning). I have some big lush ones but it takes me a lot of time to keep them looking this way. And for pests: systemics or beneficial inscects, otherwise it´s impossible to deal with. But despite all this, they do make beautiful curtains in the windows :-)

The only ‘string of’ that I had success with (for a while) was ‘string of needles’ but it went to plant heaven after 6 years. Would try again but can’t find any in the UK. Love string of dolphins but if you don’t have enough sun they become elongated and your string of dolphins turns into a string of flatfish
Yep i agree with 9 of them. I love my monstera but it is hard to handle, size wise. As long as it continues to make me happy it will be in my connection tho. Nerve plants are beautiful if you have time to fuss over them but after awhile....yuck!
I still have my green monstera, but by accident 4 and will have to get rid of 2 now they are growing big. The fittonia will now survive with me, the current string of hearts is struggling and so is the string of dolphins (but still love it).

Hoya krimson queen….killed itself popping out white leaves. I tried moving it to different lighting conditons but it was determined to die🤷♀️
Hoya Krimson Queen can be quite temperamental, I found that too! 🌿 It's always a learning curve with different lighting. 🌞🍃
I've had mine for years. I've even forgotten to water it till the leaves were turning into papyrus! In retaliation for the abuse, it has never bloomed for me. 😪
I have a massive string of hearts I just gave a hard prune, it was probably 9 feet long so I cut it back to like 6 feet, got the variegated and string of daggers too. Im giving up on begonias, calatheas, and ferns.

I was waiting for the tradescantia. 😂 I still have a plain green one that I adore and it seems much less dramatic than the others. It still needs some propagating every once in a while but it grows so healthy and long I can’t give it up.
Another would be Peperomia. I’d say 50% thrive, and 50% are total drama queens. I’m forever moving them back and forth between plastic and terra cotta trying to get their watering right. Maybe they’d do better in Pon but frankly I can’t be bothered. Eventually I’ll just rehome the picky ones.

Completely agree on all tradescantua I love them in the summer but they look like utter garbage the rest of the year. I have two that I leave as survival of the fittest lol I leave it all winter in the cold... if it survives it gets to live another summer... but I certainly would never buy another from this species again

You can grow the Gynura Aurantica / The purple vines as a hanging plant and they grow wonders when grown that way (ok, maybe it becomes demanding with watering)
But yeah 😅 they bloom with a very bad smell, imagine a smell of a fury animal that was sweating a whole week and didn’t take a bath; that’s what I think it smelled like 😅 // I was so confused when it bloomed for me the first time too, nowadays I just cut and remove all flowers 😅

Trying to be nostalgic, I had a watermelon peperomia recently, as I grew one as a kid. My most epic fail! I couldn't keep it alive, even the propagations! They just shriveled and died. 😢
Hi hope I'm not intruding but I wasn't aware you had a bioactive set up for your spike ..I'm getting a gargoyl and I'm not sure wether to go bioactive or not ...is it a lot more messing than a non bio set up I'm really interested ..I'd live to see it 😊 or if anyone has any input on bio active terrariums for reptiles I'd love to hear what you think sorry it's a bit off topic but ..love you channel and all your contact it's a big highlight for me ... everyone have a very happy festive period however you celebrate it 🎉

I gave away ~10 y.o. nerve plant and ~1 y.o. variegated string of hearts. Neither aged well for me turning one into woody stems with sparse foliage, and another into mainly stings with very few hearts as it was growing. At the end of the day, my deciding factor was aesthetics.
Aesthetic goals are real! 🎨 Sometimes plants just don't age as we'd hope. Love your style! 😊🌿
Have you (or anyone) found anything particularly crucial when it comes to Maiden Hair Fern care? (Fertilizing, light, etc.) currently have a baby and would love to grow it out as I love the look of them!
Maiden Hair Ferns can be picky! 🌿💚 Consistent moisture and a good spot are key, I also have had great success with semi hydro with them. Here's to growing a lush fern! 🌱🤞

I could never get string of pearls happy in my home. I tried every trick in the book. Gave it the best light available. Watered it very carefully and very sparsely from the bottom. Still died. Some even within 2 weeks of bringing them home. After 6-7 of them I just gave up
I find string of pearls rather easy to grow and propagate. They do require *direct* sunlight however, could that be why yours failed to thrive? Were you maybe keeping them in bright shade?
@@karinkuhlemann5359I kept them under a direct growlight. That's about as much light as there can be in my appartment and it's usually sufficient for most plants
I no longer grow watermelon peperomia due to my inability to keep them looking good. They don’t die...they just look pitiful!
Ferns are definitely no longer on my list.

Just because I cut something back does mot mean that I have to propagate the cuttings, just saying. None of the String of...s make the cut for me, had a lot of them and I have decided that I don't like them. The white Fitonia and the white Polkadot do make the cut for me, but just one of each. None of the tradescantias make me happy. And unfortunately Spider plants hate me, kinda weird, but true. I really envy you! I love ferns and can grow a lot of them. But my favorite the Maidenhair fern, not so much. I keep trying though.
Imo and I feel the sting of dolphins are 100% easer than tears and less prone of breaking the leaves off and smells AMAZING when it blooms and it’s strong. I do live in the deserts of the USA so 🤷🏻. The sting of hearts are super annoying when they tangle.

@@Houseplantygoodness the dolphins are the only ones I feel that do decent with out the drama of the pearls effect of rotting away. It could be the dryer temps that could help it out but I feel that out of the strings the hearts and dolphins are more newcomers friendly. Keep the amazing videos going I’m a few behind but love the tips you provide with your own experience with the plants in your environment. So many plants that the USA don’t have that look neat!
tradescantias are amazing as cheap, lush thing for window cell - I hate those begonias everyone is using - they are sting :-D Im wintering them in unheated basement... for next year I will try to keep just cuttings to save space... no need for full window box of this weed...
