- The consumer group Which? has recently announced the best free days out in the UK for 2024. The National Railway Museum in York secured second place, praised for its extensive collection of railway memorabilia and its appeal to both train enthusiasts and general visitors. The top spot went to St Fagans National Museum of History in Cardiff, known for its open-air exhibits and demonstrations of traditional crafts (Time Out Worldwide).
Our visit to the National Railway Museum confirmed that the high ranking is well-deserved. The museum offers an impressive array of historical trains, including the only bullet train outside of Japan. The exhibits are well-curated, providing a fascinating insight into the history of rail transport and its impact on society. The interactive displays and the opportunity to explore various carriages and locomotives make it an engaging experience for visitors of all ages (Time Out Worldwide).
In conclusion, the Which? survey appears to be on point, highlighting attractions that offer rich historical experiences and engaging activities without an admission fee. The National Railway Museum in York is a prime example of an outstanding free day out in the UK.

We reveal the UK's 17 best rated museums, galleries, cathedrals and other historical sites that are free to visit!
Over 4,000 people took part in our survey of the UK's best museums and more than 3,000 told us about their favourite historic attractions.
The results were surprising - not just because many of Britain's favourite places are little-known gems - but also because many of them were completely free.
We ranked more than 100 museums, galleries and attractions to find the country's finest and its best-value days out. The top rated museum (St Fagans in Cardiff) and gallery (Kelvingrove in Glasgow) don't charge for entry, while several of the best historic attractions are also free.
In some cases, such as the Houses of Parliament, you'll need to plan ahead. It's only free for UK residents - and you have to book through your MP. But many destinations are open all year round with no advance booking required. Check the destination website first.
Many of the attractions below also have special appeal for kids, with tours and games tailored to families, as well as playgrounds.

Ah thank you Alessa. Not in my wildest dreams did I think the railway museum would be free but luckily I track the WHICH consumer survey website almost every day. Mostly to make videos disregarding anything they say (they seem to do the best numbers on youtube). A week and a half ago they did the top ten best free days out in the UK and I was genuinely shocked to see the railway museum on there. Id say have a look at WHICH, also on the same article they say that any Brit can visit the House of Commons for free during PMQ. id love to do that (you have to book)

We took out youngest grandson on the train about 2 months ago and I remember taking my oldest grandson on the train about 14 years ago, each time brilliant and free too. The sister museum (Locomotion) is walkable from out house and a place have visit on a monthly basis and have been doing so with all of our grandkids and such a great morning out, also free too. ah thank you Alan, had such great memories as a 6 year old in the 70s growing up on Thomas the Tank engine books being able to visit the place. as my memory serves, I’m positive the same train greeted me. not particularly into trains but boy oh boy did this place impress. every inch of this place exudes class, from all the staff, to the cleanliness, to the work going into everything you will see. I follow WHICH consumer survey because they are usually so wrong about things that it’s easy to hit up some easy YT numbers with them. they did, word of their gospel, best rated free UK days out, I jumped at it. to be honest I was surprised the railway museum was free. not only did we visit but when we met the lovely Cara on her travels we had to revisit. love the place, we will be back. in our opinion? I can’t honestly imagine a better place, Cardiff takes top spot, I need to visit there, or hopefully the lovely Phil will soon..

so annoying Adzey. we have a direct line from here to Manchester Airport and we are flying out from there next week. whilst the travel is expensive we would opt to pay for expensive UK train travel (the dearest in the world BTW) to have that luxury. try booking it..put in the dates and times comes up with a warning “YOUR JOURNEY MIGHT BE DISRUPTED BY RAIL TRAVEL UNION DISPUTES” just pathetic. this is the fifth year of overpaid rail workers on great salaries and benefits striking. they are all… ..you know what I’m thinking!

ah us too Ervin. last time I visited a railway museum I was 6, it looked the same to me! these gargantuan engines still tower above me to this day, so many feet taller! in other news we have a DJI MINI 3 on the way and we have been back to backing the best hiker on the planet and his skill with mixing drone shots and small detail. once we have had some practice a video in your honour is coming asap!

Great day out and a fun meetup. The train trolley tour thing looked like fun. Can't beat a free museum, nd what better one to bring out the kid inside than a train museum. The fact there's a list of free days out is great, not really going to find much of that in Vegas LoL. Some really cool and diverse designs, the red one at 06:26 looks pretty fast. While we've visited York many times over the years, we have never visited this museum, even though it is free, which is a rarity in York! It looks like a fun place to visit though. Nick was like a little lad in a sweet shop lol. Cool that you got to spend some time with Cara around York.

Wow ! Childhood memories came flooding back. Giddy excitement of seeing life size versions of the Hornby Train set you’d save your pocket money for. A full size Mallard no less….Not been since a child. Enjoyed this immensely and that’s pretty controversial about American Kit Kats…. Brilliant film as always, I’ve never been to York but must put that right soon. Great museum, have heard good things about it from many people. Loved the bridge twirl and the model railway. Well done 👍
thanks Mike, the place did bring out the inner child in me but the amount of care and cleanliness throughout the site was almost overwhelming. We filmed over two days and still didn’t touch the surface of what there was to offer. Two great days out in York, took a picnic the first day and spent £2.40 on souvenirs and on the second visit we bought a meal deal from a Tesco Local at £3.70. Visited the museum gardens, took in the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey, walked the River Ooze and the city walls, visited Clifford’s Tower and took a stroll through the Shambles, one of Europes oldest medieval streets. this barely touches the surface of all the free things to be had in York. just don’t mention the Minster.. £48 for the two of us to enter and built by the same person as Beverley Minister which is the same spec, down the road and free!

I haven’t been to the railway museum in York for years - I nearly went last month but got side tracked with the river boat cruise 😀 must check it out next time. Nice to have a look around. It’s great for a free museum isn’t it. Always a good reason to go to York. Do love the dining carriages. Interesting how popular it is watching the running trains - quite a busy junction there. The penny machines are great too! You just have to don’t you!

Ah fabulous. I visited with my Dad when I was a teenager. I really need to come back. Great seeing Cara joining you guys. And the museum is so well laid out. I feel so sorry for the train drivers not being able to get by in £59k a year. Must be such a struggle. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️. I 😂ran less than half that so have zero respect for these chancers.

love you Watto. same conversation I’ve been having with my mates for the last five years they have been striking. utterly ridiculous, to be fair with most people striking. don’t like it? get another job or work for yourself. wages go up with inflation if your lucky, do something about it, if you strike your a tool and you should lose your job, security and benefits. it irks me even more because we are self employed, if we don’t fulfil our duties we are done, we don’t get holidays, we don’t get sickness or benefits, if people don’t like our work they will choose to drop us and yet these guys get top wages and benefits and still disrupt the Country. absolute.. well I know you know the word. rail museum a free place? well that’s amazing, hadnt seen it since I was 6, made me feel 6 again. I love the Railway Museum and always recommend it to people visiting York as I think sometimes people think you need to be really interested in trains to go, but there is plenty of interesting information and lots to enjoy whether you're a train spotter or just keen to have a browse around a cool museum without spending a fortune. I've always been keen to do one of the Flying Scotsman journeys when it comes to York, but they are definitely not free 🤣. Still pretty cool you can go along and see it though. Thanks for showing us more of Yorkshire's wonderful sights and attractions.

Like Nick I haven't been to the NRM in York for years - definitely sometime in the '80s. We got spoiled with Locomotion being built ( also part of NRM) in Shildon which is closer to where we live. Like York, it's free. I nearly did a video from there on the Bank Holiday weekend but they just opened a new railway hall and I expected it was going to be heaving, One for a future video.
We actually filmed this over two days Andy. went the week before half term and it was pretty nice, revisited on Bank Holiday Monday with Cara and tbh it was a wee bit mental. think we had children climbing up our legs at one point and the noise level was insane. almost impossible to record any audio. id say get down there before the kids break up for summer, there is definitely enough to see there for a full day out.

Wow, very cool! Never been to St Fagins either. Rach was just saying about the Mallard and there it is, I’d love to see that. I’d love to say we love trains, and we do, but having been to London twice this week, including today (we’ve just got back), we have to say the trains are great but the companies running them, maybe not so much!!! Ah thank you so much guys. We filmed the top five things to do in York on a budget the week previous. We had no idea the york museum was free so were delighted to include it. We couldn’t miss up the opportunity to take the lovely Cara there and see more of it. The WHICH surveys are great fodder for TH-cam videos. Ideally we would be disagreeing with their surveys (two of our best videos have done just that) but on this they got it right. Two of the top ten free days out are in Cardiff, not a million miles away from you guys. Possibly worth a look. The Kit Kat thing is a strange one, I think America had less safeguards on how much sugars and fats go into things so maybe they do? Id like someone to do a taste comparison and confirm! Xx

Well just to let you know you know, the last 3 train journeys we’ve booked as a family have either been cancelled, redirected or terminated at a change over station - pathetic.
It really is pathetic we go on holiday in a week and looked at getting the train to the airport but a warning comes up that it may not run! can’t run that risk of missing our flight so will be driving and parking! you have a few of the top things to do in your neck of the woods! Great day out...we have been a couple of times before..York is a fabulous place for a day out...Railway museum, Minster, the walls walk, and Cliffords tower are always the places we head for..oh and the old pubs of course.
Ah it was wonderful, we walked Cara ragged. We did the ruins of St Mary’s and the Hospitium in the Museum Gardens first. Then the railway museum, then Clifford’s tower, then all of the walls and then we did the cat trail in the Shambles, great day! So much to do for free in York, awesome place!

Nick I could see how buzzing you were to be there after so long! I knew a bridge twirl was coming 😂 excellent singing! Drivers are on strike, shock horror 😂 I remember the good old Intercity 125! I must say for a free attraction the Museum is excellent. Not that I've been but I will one day! And I am not accepting that American kitkats, or any of their choccy bars, taste better!
Have to say Matt, im a life long fan of Kershes Kisses. Boy they taste so good, like a little glimpse of chocolates you might steal from a Christmas tree as a child and really enjoy. I think Hershe’s Kisses all the way…

Fabulous walking tour that reminds me of the steam locomotive ride around Xmas last year. Unbelievable this museum offers free admission.

Thank you Simon. Prior to the 125s in the 80s and 90s which I used to travel on for work I do remember the pull down the window and open the door ones. I used to love jumping out and running with the train in the 70s. The railway museum? What a place. If I had known It was free I would have never stopped visiting.
Even if you don't like trains this place is a must. Can you still sit in the Bullet train?😃xx

I really can't believe that this fabulous place is free ! Did someone make a mistake ? I thought somewhere like this would be about £20. While I'm not a train fanatic, this looked a brilliant place with so much content absolutely gleaming. Ahhh the model railway haha I remember fighting my two older brothers to get the controls of their train set lol Great bridge twirl. Lovely to meet up with friends too. Ages since I've been in a train ... like you say so unreliable. Haha our local station is in the middle of fields too, over a mile out of town down a muddy lane with no lights ... not that user friendly lol 😆
hi Christine oh no that doesn’t sound user friendly at all. Someone says it’s always been free but we were sure you use to have to pay! they take donations at the entrance and there are donation boxes about inside! Hope you are managing to get some good hikes in have a great week 👍

Are they always on strike because the museum is free? 🤔 I think it is pretty crazy that the museum is free. Sacramento has a really good one here, definitely not free though
Thats a good question Leon! 😂 they have been on strike for five years now which is really frustrating. some days they don’t run at all and others will be on a limited service. you really can’t trust booking a train as even at the point of booking there are warnings saying that your train might not run due to industrial action. I will have a look at the Sacramento one! 👍
