  • A short but enjoyable afternoon session spent at Manchester Victoria where we see plenty of services from Northern and Transpennine Express.
    Manchester Victoria was opened by the Manchester and Leeds Railway in 1844. Most of the original station still stands. When the station was opened it was served by two railway companies, the parent company the Manchester and Leeds Railway and the Liverpool to Manchester Railway. In 1845 the Manchester and Leeds Railway became part of the Grand Junction Railway which eventually became part of the London and North Western Railway in 1846. In 1847 the Manchester and Liverpool Railway became the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway to which they then moved their headquarters to Manchester Victoria.
    In 1865 the station saw the introduction of four bay platforms were built on the eastern side that used to be home to a cemetery that was moved to another area of the city, there was another platform built on the western side. There was also second through platform built because the station only had one and at the time was served by 6 different companies so space was becoming a bit of a premium. Trains were running from Victoria to London and Glasgow.
    20 years later the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway brought the workhouse North of the station and used the sight to build another new bay platform and five through platforms which came into use by 1884.
    In 1904 the station was at its biggest with 17 platforms gracing it.
    The station wasn't just handling passengers traffic it was used for parcel traffic and the deliverance of newspapers. From 1895 to 1940 there was a overhead parcels carrier that would be used to lift parcels and transport them across the station.
    During the Manchester Blizt of WW2 the station was constantly under heavy bombardment and was hit several times by high explosive bombs resulting in the destruction of the parcels office and a large chunk of the station roof, the parcels office was rebuilt but the damaged section of the roof wasn't replaced and instead just simply removed.
    Platforms 1 - 4 In the 1970's were shut because there had been plans for a new rail tunnel linking Piccadilly to Victoria, however the costs began to spiral out of control and instead proposals were put forward for a light rail transit system to be put in place which is eventually what happened and is now the home to the Metrolink system running across the city. The Metrolink system opened in 1992.
    In the 1980's and 1990's British Rail had adopted a policy of trying to focus the bulk of the train services running into Piccadilly, in 1989 the Windsor Link Chord was opened in Salford which enabled a lot of the trains running from the north to go straight to Piccadilly and miss Victoria, in the same year the Transpennine services were also diverted which meant that the station was eventually reduced to just 6 working platforms and some of the site was sold off for development between 1992 and 1994.
    In 2009 Victoria was identified as the worst interchange station because of its poor appearance and overall condition. The Secretary of State at the time had named Victoria along with nine other stations to have a share of £50 million which would go towards getting the station revamped. But in 2010 the funds were withdrawn from the budget and Network stepped up with the funds to get the station back into shape and look appealing for the passengers that would use the station, the improvements carried out by Network Rail included: A new roof, restoration of the station walls, exterior canopy and facades along with new finish facilities and better accessibility getting into and out of the station.
    My next film will be from Crewe on the West Coast Mainline.

    I love Manchester Victoria. Lots of good links from the North West to the North East. The actual station looks nice itself. Ive been to that station twice. Once recently and once in November 2023.

    My wife and I are having a short break in Manchester and Liverpool late in October, which is all booked except for the outward journey (on Sun 29th Oct) as no cheap tickets are available yet. My guess, is that these will be available in a couple of weeks.
    Funnily enough, our homeward journey from Liverpool to Newcastle (Thurs Nov 2nd) was booked a few weeks ago, for the bargain price of about £29 for the two of us, with a two Together railcard.
    The only direct journey to Manchester Victoria is with TPE, but their reliability isn't the best. Coming home, if we are delayed an hour or even ore, no big deal, but a delay on the outward journey would be annoying, having only booked 2 nights in Manchester. Would you book with TPE and hope for the best, or consider another route, perhaps with a change at York ?

    Hi Tornado922. Great film at Manchester Victoria. Regarding the very squeaky brakes throughout the film, all the 150s around the UK are now known to me as 'the WD40 trains' because of the brakes squeaking before they stop at stations. Looking forward to watching the next film at Crewe. Kind regards, Chris.

      Thanks very much Chris, it seems almost every train in the UK has squeaky brakes now haha!

    Once a station I always use to keep passing through whenever there was a day out going on and still around the time the pacers were still very active. I know it has changed a lot since then
    in regards to the Manchester trams they are labelled as ML 30xx the destinations are quite vast including The airport, Altrincham and Trafford Centre to the likes of Bury, Rochdale and Ashton-Under-Lyne. So you can tell they just about going anywhere really!

      This is a great station to come to but it just needs a little bit more lighting on the through lines as it quite dark. The tram network around Manchester is quite amazing to see, I'm sure they have plans to extend it further

    What's the use of these overhead wires? Every single train are running diesel, even the 802s! Seems like a waste to me...

      Mainy for the Liverpool-Manchester lines at the present moment but Stalybridge will be energised soon as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, the 769 & 802s switch from Electric to Diesel at victoria.

      @Cactus732 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s just because of it being at that end of the platform. Bi-mode trains depart westbound on electric towards Bolton and Liverpool.

    • @darrylrichardson7940
      @darrylrichardson7940 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could also be to save money. When the price of electricity went up a couple of years back freightliner stopped using class 90s and swapped to class 66,s because it was cheaper to use diesel than electricity. Travelled from Exeter St Davids to Reading last week. Was surprised that when the unit 800311 left reading it was still on diesel and had no put the pantograph up to switch over to electric mode

      @@darrylrichardson7940 That Ashville video proved how cheap diesel by rail is being red diesel plus can take lots of truck loads instead of just one
