Today Ashton Jeanty is a Heisman finalist, and Boise State finally gets its day in the Playoff they always wanted. That game ultimately set in motion the CFP to ever exist. This game still makes me smile all these years later.
Absolutely. I’ve watched it again, and gotten confused: there’s no way Boise State wins this, but I swear they did… oh (several miracles later) THAT’S how it happened….
Everything about this was legendary. The game and critical plays were unbelievable. And then you realize Adrian Peterson was in this game, coached by Bob Stoops against Chris Peterson. Unreal moment in College Football history
It was the only choice really.. his defense was smoked (tired).. you saw how easily OU scored in OT.. Far more brains than balls in that decision Edit: the real 'balls' in it was the play call, lol.. Statue of Liberty play is something you see in peewee and pop warner leagues, not DIV I college football
@dre32pitt Earlier that season, Boise ran a play out of that same formation and didn't hand the ball off. Petersen knew someone on Oklahoma had to have seen that on film and then added the hand-off. Great coach
@@zach14m yes, I'm aware they ran that play for about a 10-12 yard gain earlier in the year (Johnson fumbled the ball out of bounds.. he fumbled more than you'd expect that season). And he didn't add a hand off, they (Z and Johnson) executed the play better than they ever did before.. Johnson would just stare at the ball the whole time and take the handoff as normal in practice and the one other time they ran it.. in the Fiesta Bowl, he looked to the right at the 3 WR bunch like he really wasn't gonna be in the play.. THEN turned to the left and took the hand off.. And yes, great coach.. OU was not ready for that, even if they did see it on film.. Edit; haha I read your comment wrong.. To your actual point (not the one I thought you were trying to make), yes, it's a common formation which you can run play action out of.. but that play was beyond play action.. it's a play ran in little league and on the black top.. The fact they practiced it and ran it twice in the season, shows how ahead of the curve Peterson was.. fundamentally it works because of the 'play action' nature of it, but no one dared to actually run it at that level due to the aforementioned correlation with youth leagues
The best game everrrrr . David beats Goliath. It looked great until Oklahoma came back then the pick 6 . Butt it's not over until the clock is all zeros z. . And the balls to call those plays at the end amazing. I'm so glad I watched this game .. go boise.
I disagree actually. I remember being there too and Oklahoma in the 4th was so loud. Their band being like 45x bigger too, ours would play then the Sooners would drown them out. But I gotta ask. Do you remember when the wall broke down and everyone fell on top of Ian Johnson?
I was at my grandma's wake while this game was aired and had to wait until the game was re-aired in its entitety the week after. An all-time game. I hope Boise wins the Fiesta Bowl again in a couple of weeks.
The first play of this clip, the pick 6, was right in my face lol. All the other drama happened on the other side. It was weird to be at this game, go back to our hotel room, and have ESPN inform us that it was one of the greatest college football games of all time. My whole family agreed it wasn't even the best BSU game we'd seen. The very next season (and the very same calendar year), the BSU / Nevada game (with a young Colin Kaepernick) was way more thrilling for me.

We all know how epic these plays were but man on that touchdown on fourth and two the defender was right there with him too!
It was a nice, accurate pass! Needed to be
Greatest football game ever!

I agree rusty. No way texas vs usc was anything but lame compared to this game!
_(great comment btw)_
That lateral off the pass was easily the cleanest best lateral I've ever seen in football period.
Everything about this was legendary. The game and critical plays were unbelievable. And then you realize Adrian Peterson was in this game, coached by Bob Stoops against Chris Peterson. Unreal moment in College Football history
And then cap it off with Ian proposing to Kristy the cheerleader
@@lupinvash3 forgot about that!!!
The balls to say "fuck it, were winning this now" by the boise coach
First year head coach at that!

I never tire of watching the ending of this - the Greatest Football Game ever played!
This was the first game I watched in High Definition, Amazing!
I’d still give that title to USC vs Texas haha
@@Tahoebronco I've watched it four times since having TH-cam which was been 6 years😀
not close
Chris Peterson is one of the greatest coaches of my time. I wish he would coach at Notre Dame.
"THE LATERAL" -- soundbites that live in my head rent free
Chills every time!
And that guy proposed after the game.
hook and lateral plus Statue of Liberty!! Going deep into the Old playbook! Now Boisie is a force to be reckoned with
Hard pressed to find a better NCAA football game. Amazing.
Boise's reputation is still living on these Fiesta Bowls. Best play calling I've ever seen at the end of a game.
Boise State is pretty much the college football version of Gonzaga. Great program and tradition.

OU hasn’t been Goliath since Barry Switzer retired
@@sethmahnken6278 Going into this game they were the Goliath.
This is one of the greatest games in CFB history. Two plays at the end were stuff of legends.
This was the best game I have watched from start to finish. Incredible. No one thought Boise State was going to win.
What a great era of football. Flordia, Noter Dame, USC, Texas, OSU, these two teams....honestly the most exciting football from the past 30 years IMO.
I was 7 and I’m not a Boise St or Oklahoma fan and I still remember this game to this day as one of the best ever
Just when you thought it was all over, they go to interview Ian Johnson on the sideline and he drops to a knee and proposes to his girlfriend.
This still gives me goosebumps
Was at this game. Boise fans were so much louder!!

Finesse and guts beat the powerful Oklahoma team…a truly epic performance by Boise, that Boise coach did a masterful job of preparing his team…
So many things can go wrong when you try something unorthodox, but the timing and execution on those gadget plays was perfect. Brilliant.

None of the power conference schools wanted to play Boise St. after this game.
They always forget about that play! VP and DS made an amazing catch and throw
DS played in the NFL for a little with Buffalo, too!
Fun fact: This was the first game these announcers did together. Their next game? App State vs. Michigan.
I was there. One of the highlights of my life. 🏈
Never gets old.
I wanna cry I love college football so much
lmfao..........You cry over a sport?
@@jamedlock83football can be romantic as fuck sometimes!
The next day first period or football coach said "Man stinks that Boise couldn't pull it out." Oh what a surprise he had coming.
He did the same thing I did on the pick-six... When I saw the result the next morning in USA Today...
This game I like to think spawned the entire madness of the 2007 season.
This will never not be epic...and given that OU was MASSIVE over-favored made it even better.
Man… to just be a fly on the wall when they called a hook and lateral on 4th and 18
I was 16 when this happened and I literally couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw how easily Johnson got into the end zone.
This never gets old.
Boise State Offensive coordinator was having some fun this game

Back when bowl games meant something and were a blast to watch!
Best play in a bowl game ever!
You just had to be there to watch this like I can’t even describe this ending in words
Best college football game of all time
The guts to go wildcat on fourth and 2 and have your non qb throw a dime is epic
That ending is up there with the best of them.
The angle never really showed if Johnson’s knee was down… Thank God.
Best game of all time!
Best trick play ever...😮
Which one? 😁
Fantastic football game!!!
The announcer said it’s a run/pass option going to the right. Fooled him and everyone else lol
I’m actually friends with Ian Johnson who scored the last td of that game
Fun game !!! 🤘🏼
This is definitely a chess vs checkers analogy
So effing great!
Oklahoma die hard here. If Jeanty doesn't win the heisman tonight it will be a travesty! I'm rooting for him!
Just came
OU has never been the same since this game. Also, it exposed Stoops for how overrated he was
The people that say Jeanty played against a bunch of nobodies have apparently never seen this game
While I don't agree that he played "nobodies" this game was from nearly 20 years ago so your point makes no sense.
Tom Brennaman worst announcer ever
That was So Awesome! Boise St. took their lunch money And kicked them in the Ass! So hilarios!..😂
Huh?! It's not as if Boise State won 27-3. It was a hard-fought OT affair.
