  • Originally designed for use as a tender for larger craft. This little boat has become an increasingly accepted option as a small fishing boat for protected waterways and freshwater impoundments.

I bought a Tuff Tender with a 15 hp Yamaha two stroke in 2008. We christened it the 'Flying Esky'.
Fantastic rig. Extremely stable, speedy, rides very well, corners like it is on rails. Seats 3. Spacious for a 3 metre boat. I added the rear seat storage at a later date.
After 10 years I sold the Tuffie on Gumtree in one week. Very popular second hand.
Polycraft have a gap in their range. The 4.2 m Poly was bigger and heavier than I needed.
The New Zealand Smartwave 3500 fitted the bill perfectly. Equally well designed and spacious for 4.
Rated to 30 hp we tried the 15 Yammie for a year and upgraded to the 25 hp Yammie light weight 4 stroke with batteryless EFI. Ordered a long shaft transom for the Smartwave to replace the short shaft. Fitted by Hunts Marine.
Sold the 15 hp Yammie 2 stroke on Gumtree for 70% of what I paid for it 10 years before, as the govt banned the sales of new 2 strokes. A 4 stroke 15 hp was heavier and $1,000 more. The new owner was putting it on another Tuff Tender!
Now we have the 'Flying Esky II' in the Smartwave 3500. Another fabulous small rig. Upholstered seats, in seat storage. Bait well or cooler under seat, comes with oars with built in blade and shaft holders. Even cup holders. We added a canopy and upholstered bench seat.
Vastly superior to a tinny. Great ride, quiet, dry, stable and does not heat up like aluminium.
    Both rigs are highly recommended.

I reckon you'd have a bigger market with a 3.5-3.7, they would be awesome running 25hp outboards with room for 4..
Proportionally bigger all round, including freeboard but the same tri-hull.
There'd still be a market for the 3mtr tender all the same, which also doubles as a 2 person only fishing boat due to it's size limitations.
    Go for it Polycraft!

Buy a Smartwave 3500 made in NZ.
We have a 25 Yammi. Great rig. Had a Tuff Tender with 15 hp prior.

I sank mine, its a tender, I am on a mooring on the reef whitsundays, heavy current area low reefs, big tides & Early morning storm, heavy sWell, came up on deck and realisesd the rope snapped , tuffy had drifted off in the current, washed up sideways on a big rock on a nearby island and just kept copping waves until my fuell tank started floating and she was full.. a stranger came picked me up and helped me , I had to go for a swim but I just got a rope on her disconnected the fuel line and as soon as he started pulling her off the rock , she listed, then sat 90 degrees sideays for 5 seconds, went fully over and went down quickly to about 15 ft and layed on the bottom upside down prop up.. I had a 25hp tohatsu on it which didnt help weight wise. But she sank and i have a witness to prove it!
His 15 hp slowly pulled her up back up up off the bottom, she came up inverted and then she literally corkscrewed the whole way back abt 1 km, into shallows where old mate got in the water with me and helped me get her the right way up .
Used a truckies hitch, over and over to pull her up onto high enough ground to get away from the next high tide and open the drain plugs . Pull the spark plugs out.
My yacht is a fair way out maybe 1nm.. had other boats and nothing is as stable ..
its pretty beat up but i get my dog , heavy toolboxs, small generators , compressors everything on and off my yacht in heavy swell and I wouldnt use another boat.
    Love my Poly.
Love the new grey ones 👍
    Any advice would be,
We are not all in flat lakes and inland rivers, some of us are out in the ocean in heavy swell , current & storm conditions.
I am a mech engineer, my two cents would be ,
what i would highly recommend is to put a bilge pump recess under the fuel tank mid rear floor and an internal float swith recess, all pre wired to a battery with waterproof connectors et.
Or even better, supply them as a standard , its a necessity Its nescessay where i am. I honestly believe if i had a bilge pump, float switch around 1100 glph set up in that situation . It would have atleast kept pumping out what the swell was pushing in, given me arleast mire time to get her out of trouble .
With a few little things like that, they would be the best tender out there bar none. I would happily pay extra for a.factory supplied and fitted quality seaflo bilge pump set up 👍
And reverse the hinges on the hatches, when she was being towed back in corkscrewing, the lids were acting as anchirs trapping the water in the recesses,
If the doors were reversed this woukd allow easier and safer recovery situations.
    Cheers Dave

How do these boats go on an open river in choppy conditions. I was told by a salesman they skim across the top of the chop with a 10hp to 15hp motor. Is he correct?

Why the box alloy under the motor mount? Is it because the shafts too long

I reckon so. The transom is 15" (381mm) and a Yamaha 15SS is 438mm. FWIW, the Suzuki SS is 381mm so probably a better match? I'm still working it out before I buy one.
