    Hey, very nice. Like mane steel players have commented that tone is in the hands. Thank you.

    Wow Raphael, that's a great lesson! When you play that "pedal steel" sounds, double stops and all that stuff I really would love to see what your left hand is doing. Really smooth!

    Hey Raphael. I just found you channel. Really inspiring stuff. Can you tell me what tuning and scale you are using for this one? Especially around 2:05. I cant seem to get what's going on here. ty

      Hi Thomas, thanks for listening! This video is in C6 tuning, which I play very frequently, low to high it's C E G A C E. The scale I'm using around that time is a major pentatonic (using the 1st,2nd,3rd,5th, and 6th notes of a major scale) but sometimes I'm playing a minor third or sliding in between the major and minor thirds. Love the questions, keep them coming!

    It is cool that your volume and tone knobs are quite available with the design of this nice lap steel. Are these the original potentiometers in this instrument? The sweep they have is just great! Thanks for a very informative video that is gonna make others pursue this instrument because the sounds you created. KC

      Thank you! Yes, those are the original pots and they are very loose compared to a lot of other pots I've seen, which really helps. I'm always afraid they will finally bite the dust and I won't be able to find ones that work as well! Glad you liked the video!

    I hear some Derek trucks influence in your vibrato and vocal phrasing

      Thanks! Yes, I love his playing, and Duane's too. Love that Oahu pickup!

    Awesome, great lesson and playing! I have a 1950 Oahu Diana so I’m going to try this. Isn’t that through pickup amazing?

    Very nice. By the way is that a Supro guitar? I bought A Supro about 60 years ago that looks a lot like yours. The pick-up assembly is almost the same. Believe it or not I still use it, though I had to rebuild it due to it's age and some abuse it suffered. (I'm 85 years old and still can't play.) But I keep trying.

      Hi thank you. It's an Oahu, but it's the same pickup as the Supro has, and essentially the exact same design. Great simple guitars, I love playing them! Good on you for sticking with it, keep going with the steel!

    Wonderful demo - thanks for posting! Question: when you are not riding the knobs do you generally keep them both on 10?

    • @raphaelmcgregor1
      @raphaelmcgregor1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question--for tone, yes, that's generally on ten, unless I'm wanting to get a sort of dark, muted jazz guitar sound, but I rarely do that. For volume, I actually like to set my amp volume loud enough so that my comping volume is between 50-75% of the way up, and then I have that additional headroom for solos.

      @@raphaelmcgregor1 So similar to the way one might use a volume pedal but it's all with the hands. I agree these are very impressive techniques and audiences do like them. In my experience audiences seem to be more attracted to a lap steel player than a console or pedal steel. Thanks again!
