I tell my students to put on a drone to practice intonation, and it's great for that, but it's also really nice to just have one to improvise against, great ear training, great way to try out ideas and really listen to what the music is telling you to do. In this case it told me to quote Mountain Jam and then go off.

Boy, Bach is really hard. It's so great to have time to work on this. Here's the first Menuet from the E Major Partita. And yes, violinists, I know, I'm supposed to play the other one. I'll work on it!

I took advantage of some time I had at home recently to practice some music I'd never ordinarily have the time to work on adapting the Bach violin sonatas (some of my favorite music of all time) for steel guitar. This is my first attempt, the gigue from the E Major Violin Partita. I had to do some octave leaps to adapt to the tuning. Looking forward to getting started on another movement now. H...
