Yes, and in 20 feet of surge, it's not even "maybe." Maybe they do not understand, or can't face, the idea of their own mortality? In addition to their upside-down values? Which I guess you could also categorize as aspects of "narcissism?" They have a problem facing certain kinds of realities.

Though I would certainly hope if you have an elderly person in your household or children or pets, even, you have a responsibility to them. Not leaving under those circumstances, if you're able, makes you a criminal, in a way. And the rescue people have an obligation to rescue, regardless. It's not fair to tax the limits of the system when there are people who probably couldn't evacuate or fell through the cracks or were missed for some reason, and these people are just being narcissistic fools.

I don't understand why people don't evacuate if they are able to. She said that it's because it's their property, but they can't do anything to protect their property by staying there. They're only risking their own safety and lives. And they can come back and find out what happened later. Or leave some sec cams to watch from afar.
People were packing uhauls in other areas and just getting out. Some of them said they didn't evacuate on another occasion and they'd never go through it again. Hearing them say that would be enough for me, in addition to the official warnings.
There were professional storm chasers who wouldn't stay in these locations. I watched some of their streams..They went into the eye of the hurricane but they got away from the surge because it's that dangerous.
Anyway I hope she and the rest of her neighbors stay safe and that the worst is soon over for all of them.

Money in this economy is a huge factor. Hotels are expensive and most likely fully booked up the entire stretch of highway up and out of Florida. Then, into Georgia, again, all hotels booked. Gasoline costs, food. The storm is literally heading in the same direction as people are trying to flee. There are a lot of reasons why people do not evacuate. When I lived in Florida, they also used to speak about hurricane preparedness in May Usually. Giving ppl time to slowly make preps for storm season. This was over 20 years ago. But now, I see ppl trying to make preparations literally the day of or a day or two before. Running out with all the other hundreds of thousands of ppl trying to get food and water and gas up their cars etc. So, there are a lot of entangling scenarios concerning this. And then usually ppl are not alllwed back into the area where there homes are, if the damage is very great and ppl are concerned about looters and other things, so, they would rather stay and see how things go. Storms also shift course so you could be fleeing one area, to an area you think is safer and the storm literally follow you there. Hurricane season is wild and draining and frustrating and expensive. 🤷🏽‍♀️
